MLB rumors: Yankees, Giants monitoring Pirates for trade

The post MLB rumors: Yankees, Giants monitoring Pirates for trade appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants both appear to be rolling toward the playoffs with plenty of baseball left to play this season, but there is always room for improvement and that is no different with these two. As the trade deadline continues to get closer and closer, both teams could be looking for upgrades at certain spots.

On the other end of the spectrum, teams who are falling out of the race will be looking to get future assets back for some of their veteran players. The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of those squads, and infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa is one of the names that could be on the way out.
The Yankees and Giants are two teams that could be in the market for Kiner-Falefa, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
'The New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants are keeping a close eye on versatile Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who should be available at the trade deadline,' Nightengale wrote.
Kiner-Falefa is hitting .280 this season, so he could be a solid piece who gets on base at the bottom of either of these lineups. He still isn't producing very many runs, but he can still be a good addition for cheap. He is also a solid player in the field that would add depth to the middle infield of both squads.

Of course, if the Yankees do end up adding the 30-year old, it would be a reunion after he played in pinstripes in 2022 and 2023.
The Yankees are just coming out the other side of a brutal offensive slump after blowing out the Orioles 9-0 on Saturday night while the Giants are in the middle of a very tight series with the Boston Red Sox.
As it stands, the Giants are just 3.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, so it makes sense why they would be trying to improve and get back on level terms with the defending champs. On the other side, the Yankees are in the lead in the AL East but are fending off a spirited push from the Tamps Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays.
While it may not be the flashiest thing to do on paper, adding a player like Kiner-Falefa could be the difference between a division title and a wild card spot in these tight races.

Blue Jays' Max Scherzer expected to come off the IL and start on Wednesday at Cleveland

FILE - Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer (31) throws during the first inning of baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles Saturday, March 29, 2025, in Toronto. (Christopher Katsarov/The Canadian Press via AP, File) TORONTO (AP) — Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start for Toronto at Cleveland on Wednesday, manager John Schneider said after the Blue Jays' 4-2 loss to the White Sox on Sunday. 'He's ready to go,' Schneider said of Scherzer, adding that the veteran right-hander will likely be capable of throwing as many as 90 pitches. Advertisement Scherzer was declared ready to return after throwing between 30 and 40 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday morning. 'Really, really excited to have him back,' Schneider said. 'That's a huge, huge, obviously, addition to us. It's Max Scherzer. I'll take that any day of the week.' At Columbus last Wednesday, Scherzer gave up two runs, struck out four and walked none over 4 1/3 innings in the second of two rehab starts for Triple-A Buffalo. The previous Friday, Scherzer struck out eight in 4 1/3 scoreless innings for the Bisons in a home start against Worcester. The 40-year-old Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in February. He left his Toronto debut against Baltimore on March 29 after three innings because of soreness in his right lat muscle. The next day, Toronto put Scherzer on the injured list because of inflammation in his thumb. Advertisement Scherzer has had two cortisone injections this season to relieve inflammation in his troublesome thumb. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list last month, but became eligible to return May 29. He went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in nine starts for Texas last season, starting the year on the injured list while recovering from lower back surgery. Scherzer said earlier this season that his sore thumb, which also impacted his 2022 and 2023 seasons, was also an issue in 2024. Scherzer won World Series titles with Washington in 2019 and Texas in 2023. He won his first Cy Young Award after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 32 starts for Detroit in 2013. The eight-time All-Star earned consecutive NL Cy Young Awards with the Nationals in 2016 and 2017. Scherzer has a career record of 216-112 with a 3.16 ERA in 467 games, including 458 starts. He has 3,408 strikeouts in 2,881 innings. ___ AP MLB:

Pirates host third annual Military Heroes Clinic at PNC Park

Before Saturday's game against the Texas Rangers, PNC Park was full of local heroes as part of the Pirates' third annual Military Heroes Clinic. The event aims to bring together active military members and veterans to give them a once-in-a-lifetime ballpark experience. That includes a skills clinic with current Bucs players and coaches, and even pre-game recognition on the field. "(It's a) beautiful atmosphere, beautiful stadium, couldn't ask for anything better. They have done a fantastic job with this event year after year," Eugene Zias Jr. of Grindstone said. "We were lucky enough to have Paul Skenes out with us today. With his military background, it's really great to be able to have him connect with our military veterans," Jackie Damrow, manager of Pirates Charities, added. All told, more than 120 local servicemen, women, and veterans took part in the event.
