Apple iPhone Has The Weirdest New Bug: Don't Send These iMessages
A problem has arisen in the iPhone and there are some things you can't quite say when you're sending an iMessage. If you do, it'll refuse to send the voice message.

Imagine, if you will, the scene: you're dictating an audio message into your iPhone Messages app. 'I've just spilled Ben & Jerry's down my Dolce & Gabbana shirt. I can't afford another, I'm going to H&M for an emergency t-shirt. Let's meet at Dave & Buster's,' you say.
You press send and all looks good at your end. Problem is, the recipient will never see it, and you may have a quiet night at Dave & Buster's waiting for them to appear.
In fact, if you could see the other phone you'd spot it doing something a bit weird, with the typing indicator on their iPhone flashing at a crazily high speed as though it was about to have a nervous breakdown. Then it would stop, with no message appearing.
It's all down to the ampersand, the one between Ben & Jerry's and the other brand names mentioned above. The issue was first spotted on the podcast Search Engine in the episode titled 'The Dave and Busters Anomaly,' named after the sports bar and restaurant chain whose title can't be transmitted. As the iPhone begins to transcribe the voice message, that's when the problem occurs.
App developer Guilherme Rambo also investigated the issue and found the same thing. Rambo's explanation of the curiosity goes like this.
'When you send an audio message using the Messages app, the message includes a transcription of the audio. If you happen to pronounce the name 'Dave and Buster's' as someone would normally pronounce it, almost like it's a single word, the transcription engine on iOS will recognize the brand name and correctly write it as 'Dave & Buster's' (with an ampersand),' he begins. So far, so good.
But there's more. 'HTML is a markup language, it uses different tags to indicate to a browser or some other program how to interpret the contents of a message. XHTML is a stricter version of HTML that's based on XML and allows custom tags, as long as the document is compatible with the XML standard. The ampersand symbol has special meaning in HTML/XHTML. It's used to indicate special characters that would normally be interpreted as code. For example, a paragraph in HTML is represented with ,' Rambo explains.
And, as MacRumors puts it: 'The parsing error triggers Apple's BlastDoor Messages feature that protects users from malicious messages that might rely on problematic parsing, so ultimately, the audio message fails to send.'
Until the bug is fixed, maybe choose different brands to mention (Haagen Dazs, J Crew, Uniqlo and McDonald's, maybe?).

Pressure is on Apple to show it hasn't lost its magic despite broken promises to ramp up iPhones with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) as rivals race ahead with the technology. Apple will showcase plans for its coveted devices and the software powering them at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicking off Monday in Silicon Valley. The event comes a year after the tech titan said a suite of AI features it dubbed "Apple Intelligence" was heading for iPhones, including an improvement of its much criticized Siri voice assistant. "Apple advertised a lot of features as if they were going to be available, and it just didn't happen," noted Emarketer senior analyst Gadjo Sevilla. Instead, Apple delayed the rollout of the Siri upgrade, with hopes that it will be available in time for the next iPhone release, expected in the fall. "I don't think there is going to be that much of a celebratory tone at WWDC," the analyst told AFP. "It could be more of a way for Apple to recover some credibility by showing where they're headed." Industry insiders will be watching to see whether Apple addresses the AI stumble or focuses on less splashy announcements, including a rumored overhaul of its operating systems for its line of devices. "The bottom line is Apple seemed to underestimate the AI shift, then over-promised features, and is now racing to catch up," Gene Munster and Brian Baker of Deepwater Asset Management wrote in a WWDC preview note. Rumors also include talk that Apple may add GenAI partnerships with Google or Perplexity to an OpenAI alliance announced a year ago. - 'Double black eye' - Infusing its lineup with AI is only one of Apple's challenges. Developers, who build apps and tools to run on the company's products, may be keen for Apple to loosen its tight control of access to iPhones. "There's still a lot of strife between Apple and developers," Sevilla said. "Taking 30 percent commissions from them and then failing to deliver on promises for new functionality—that's a double black eye." A lawsuit by Fortnite maker Epic Games ended with Apple being ordered to allow outside payment systems to be used at the US App Store, but developers may want more, according to the analyst. "Apple does need to give an olive branch to the developer community, which has been long-suffering," Sevilla said. "They can't seem to thrive within the restrictive guardrails that Apple has been putting up for decades now." As AI is incorporated into Apple software, the company may need to give developers more ability to sync apps to the platform, according to Creative Strategies analyst Carolina Milanesi. "Maybe with AI it's the first time that Apple needs to rethink the open versus closed ecosystem," Milanesi said. - Apple on defensive - Adding to the WWDC buildup is that the legendary designer behind the iPhone, Jony Ive, has joined with ChatGPT maker OpenAI to create a potential rival device for engaging with AI. "It puts Apple on the defensive because the key designer for your most popular product is saying there is something better than the iPhone," Sevilla said. While WWDC has typically been a software-focused event, Apple might unveil new hardware to show it is still innovating, the analyst speculated. And while unlikely to come up at WWDC, Apple has to deal with tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump in his trade war with China, a key market for sales growth as well as the place where most iPhones are made. Trump has also threatened to hit Apple with tariffs if iPhone production wasn't moved to the US, which analysts say is impossible given the costs and capabilities. "The whole idea of having an American-made iPhone is a pipe dream; you'd have to rewrite the rules of global economics," said Sevilla. One of the things Apple has going for it is that its fans are known for their loyalty and likely to remain faithful regardless of how much time it takes the company to get its AI act together, Milanesi said. iPhone users say Mail app is suddenly freezing with iOS 18.5 — here's a fix you can try
Since Apple rolled out iOS 18.5, a growing number of iPhone users have reported issues with accessing their inbox as the Mail app is getting stuck on a blank white screen. Several comments on Reddit and the Apple Support Community describe being unable to view emails in their inboxes as the app is either glitchy or unresponsive. Apple's big software developers' conference, WWDC25, is due to open soon, at 10 a.m. Pacific on Monday, June 9, to be precise. There will be new software for the iPhone, believed to be called iOS 26, for iPad (iPadOS 26), macOS 26 for the Mac, and so on. Here's what's thought to be coming for the iPhone (and here's when you can install it for yourself). This year's WWDC is almost here. Apple More features are coming and it's thought these will include upgraded intelligence models to power Genmoji, Writing Tools and summarization — which is currently missing from News apps, so we can hope this will return. It's also thought that Apple will open its on-device foundation models to developers. This could be remarkable. The …Translate app …functionality is getting integrated across its operating systems,' Gurman says. If you've been thinking of switching to WhatsApp, Apple wants to tempt you to stay with Messages by adding the capability to set background images, which will sync between devices, including the people you're chatting to. It's possible that further changes to RCS integration will also come, offering much more secure messages between iPhones and Android phones. The Camera app will be updated to make it look simpler to use, after successive additions of features and options led to an interface some found a bit clunky. Mac users know that Preview is a splendidly useful app, especially for managing documents and PDFs, for instance. 'The software looks similar to the Mac version, and its launch screen is in the same style as apps like Pages and Keynote,' Gurman claims. There are many more than seven upgrades coming, of course.
