‘What can't she do' – RTE Super Garden contestant faces huge design setback as worker quits mid-build

The Irish Sun29-04-2025
RTE Super Garden contestant Eileen Sung was left with a major setback tonight as one of her workers quit mid-build.
The brand new series of Super Garden continued tonight with five new budding designers battling it out for a coveted show garden spot at Bord Bia's Bloom in 2025.

The super gardeners hoping to have their designs shown off at Bord Bia Bloom are Chris, Jorge, Debbie, Eileen and Rosie.
And overseeing the competition are three judges; Brian Burke, former Super Garden winner Monica Alvarez, and Carol Marks.
In tonight's show, viewers met 72-year-old gardener Eileen Sung from Derry, who currently lives in Belfast.
Eileen is a self-admitted latecomer to gardening and design, something which she only began 12 years ago, at age 60.

Before studying horticulture, Eileen picked up a wealth of experience across many fields, including being a police officer in Hong Kong for eight years.
When she returned to Ireland from Hong Kong, she took up a job at the Northern Irish Assembly - where she worked until retirement.
Retiring at 60 is when she reskilled, went back to school to study, and graduated in 2024 with a degree from the University of Ulster in horticulture.
Eileen has been a big fan of the show, and her dream is for her designs to be presented at Bord Bia's Bloom in the Phoenix Park.

Putting that dream to the test, she designed a garden for new homeowners Vasile and Sarah.
The happy couple who live in Baker Hall, Navan with their three-year-old son, Francesco, want the perfect space to raise their growing family.

As Sarah revealed she is pregnant with another child for the couple, they want a space where they can relax and their children can grow up and play in.
Understanding their needs, Eileen set out to create a garden she called, New Beginnings.
The first step she took in creating "New Beginnings" for the family, she wanted to plant four trees in the garden, each representing a family member.
But her build got off to a rocky start, when she changed a core aspect of the design before any of her materials arrived.
'SHOW MUST GO ON'
In a bid to be more sustainable, Eileen changed her idea of including gravel in the garden - to only using grass.
With her mind constantly changing and the design ever evolving, Eileen's lead landscaper quit mid-build.
Undisturbed by the setback, Eileen insisted the "show must go on" as she roped in students from her college to help pull off the build.
She also enlisted the help of her fellow Super Garden contenders to get her flowers planted in time.
SUPER SETBACKS
After a to-the-bone final polishing of her garden, Eileen finished her design, although it slightly deviated from her initial concept - and finished her first ever garden design.
The judges also seemed impressed by what she managed to pull off as they noted her planting was "some of the best" they'd ever seen.
RTE viewers inspired by her conviction to get the job done, despite setbacks, raced to social media to champion the retiree.
Una said: "Come on Eileen!"
Charlotte commented: "There's nothing this lady can't do.... She's amazing."
Frances remarked: "Can we have a documentary about Eileen herself, she sounds fascinating."

Eurovision bosses announce city to host the 2025 song contest

RTE's Irish delegation is set to travel to Vienna for next year's Eurovision as the host city is revealed. Austria's capital was selected by national broadcaster ORF and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) following a competitive bid process. The Grand Final will be staged at the Wiener Stadthalle on Saturday 16 May, with Semi-Finals on Tuesday 12 and Thursday 14 May. This will be the third time Vienna has welcomed Eurovision. The city first hosted in 1967 after Udo Jürgens' victory the year before, and again in 2015 following Conchita Wurst's win. Next year's contest comes after Austria's JJ triumphed in Basel this May with Wasted Love, securing the country's third Eurovision crown. Martin Green, Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, said Vienna's reputation as "one of the most musical cities in the world" and its central European location made it the ideal choice. He added that the Stadthalle proved to be an "exceptional venue" when it staged the 60th edition. Vienna's mayor Michael Ludwig said the city would ensure events around the contest are accessible to everyone, while Tourism Director Norbert Kettner described Eurovision and Vienna as a "perfect match". Eurovision has delivered significant boosts to recent host cities, with Liverpool, Malmö and Basel all reporting major gains in tourism and international profile. Further details on events, participating countries and ticket sales will be announced in the coming months. It comes after we revealed RTE spent €385,000 for two weeks in Basel, sending Norwegian singer Emmy to the Eurovision Song Contest in May of this year. The national broadcaster forked out €50,785 for a hotel for 19 people who were part of the delegation who travelled to Switzerland in May. Emmy failed to secure a place for Ireland in the final with her tune Laika Party. A Freedom of Information request revealed production costs amounted to €79,242, transportation costs totalled €1,407, while €7,503 was spent on economy flights Basel. The FOI showed a total of €2,538 was spent on 'representation', while 'subsistence costs' were €12,079. RTE said: 'The cost associated with Eurovision is two fold; one is to produce an act to represent Ireland in the biggest entertainment show in the world, to a standard that we can be proud of in front of an audience of 166 million viewers, the other is to provide over nine hours of live entertainment to an Irish audience who watch the competition in large numbers. The Chase star Darragh Ennis says popular RTE quiz show should be revived

The Chase star Darragh Ennis has revealed he would love to host a revival of RTE's Blackboard Jungle. Blackboard Jungle was a quiz show, which aired on RTE2 from 1992 and 1998 and was hosted by Ray D'Arcy. The show featured two teams of three students from competing secondary schools and ran for seven series. Speaking on Off The Ball's podcast, Darragh said: 'I didn't (go on it). I have a couple of friends who did. I think we should revive that, and they should have me as host. 'I think that would be brilliant. So RTE, listen to me. It would be brilliant. All you need is a minibus. 'I would absolutely love it to come back. I think it would be great. And I genuinely, all joking aside, I'd love to do something like that. I'd love to host it. I think it was a great show. 'Everybody liked it, and it wasn't expensive to make,' he added.
