Delhi Govt Issues Covid Advisory As Cases Rise, Hospitals Told To Step Up Preparedness

The Delhi government on Friday issued an advisory to hospitals and health centres, asking them to step up preparedness for Covid-19. The advisory from the health department comes amid a small but noticeable rise in Covid cases being reported in several Indian states.
In the advisory, hospitals have been directed to ensure the availability of beds, oxygen, vaccines, and essential medicines, along with proper functioning of equipment such as ventilators, oxygen concentrators, Bi-PAP machines, and PSA plants.
'The hospitals must ensure preparedness in terms of availability of beds, oxygen, antibiotics, other drugs and vaccine. All equipment such as ventilators, Bi-PAP, oxygen concentrators and PSA must be in functional condition," the health department's advisory stated.
The advisory also directed that all positive samples are to be sent to Lok Nayak Hospital for genome sequencing to help track any emerging variants. Health facilities have also been asked to provide daily updates through the Delhi State Health Data Management Portal.
Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, speaking to the media, said as of Thursday (May 22), around 23 active Covid cases had been reported in the national capital. 'The Delhi government is currently verifying whether these patients of Delhi or have come from outside the city," he said.

Singh added that the BJP-led Delhi government has already coordinated with medical superintendents, doctors, and hospital staff to ensure readiness.
'The Delhi government is fully prepared to deal with any situation, and there is no need for the public to panic," he stated.
The advisory comes as India sees a mild rise in Covid-19 cases, with 257 active cases reported nationwide as of 19 May, according to the Union Health Ministry. Kerala leads the count, followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and several other states including Delhi.

86.5 lakh deaths in 2022, 15% dip over COVID-hit 2021: CRS data
Nearly 86.5 lakh deaths were reported in the country during 2022, a significant decline of more than 15% from COVID-affected 2021 which had recorded over 1.02 crore deaths, according to a new data from the Civil Registration System (CRS). The dip of 15.74 lakh from 2021 brought mortality figures broadly back in line with pre-pandemic patterns last seen in 2020, the data for 2022 brought out by the office of the Registrar General of India through CRS report showed. According to the CRS data, 2021 registered a sharp spike with 1.02 crore deaths across the country as compared to 81.1 lakh in 2020, 76.4 lakh in 2019, and 69.5 lakh in 2018, underscoring the impact of COVID-19. "In the case of registered deaths, the number has decreased from 102.2 lakh in 2021 to 86.5 lakh in 2022, i.e. a decrease of 15.4%. Some of the major states namely, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar and Haryana have contributed significantly to the decreased number of registered deaths," the report said. Around 5.26 lakh deaths were reported due to COVID-19 till July 26, 2022, according to a reply given by the government in the Lok Sabha on July 29, 2022. The World Health Organisation had reported over 47 lakh COVID-19 linked deaths in India which was strongly disputed by the government. The Centre had said the WHO estimates suffered from "a number of inconsistencies and erroneous assumptions". "India had registered a strong objection to the process, methodology and outcome of this unscientific modelling approach especially when India had provided authentic data published through Civil Registration System by Registrar General of India to WHO," the government reply had said. The CRS report also showed that over 2.54 crore births were registered in 2022. "The number of registered births has increased from 242.0 lakh in 2021 to 254.4 lakh in 2022, an increase of about 5.1%," the report said. There has been an increase in 2022 in registered births in almost all states and UTs, except Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal, Ladakh, and Lakshadweep as compared to 2021. Nine major states namely, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Assam have contributed significantly to the increase in registered births in 2022 over 2021, the report said. "On the other hand, decrease in registered births in six figures has been observed in two major states namely, West Bengal and Bihar during 2021-2022," it said.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian participates in Nadapom Nalam Peruvom Scheme
NAMAKKAL: 'We have not received any guidelines from the Union government regarding new Covid variants but we are prepared as per orders received from the CM and have about 95,000 beds ready,' said Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma Subramanian in Namakkal on Saturday. The minister also took part in the Nadapom Nalam Peruvom (Health Walk) Scheme at Namakkal Government Boys Higher Secondary School. Later, he inaugurated five buildings, including additional buildings for PHCs, constructed at a cost of Rs 2.96 crore in Mudalaipatti. The minister laid the foundation stone for over 13 new buildings there. The minister inspected the Government Headquarters Hospital in Rasipuram, which was constructed at a cost of Rs 53.39 crore. Following the inspection in Rasipuram, he participated in a press meeting where he commented on new Covid variants. 'After the AIADMK regime, we had the capacity to provide 200 MT of oxygen. Now, we are capable of providing 2,000 MT of oxygen, and with storage, we can provide up to 3,000 MT of oxygen,' he added.

Odisha steps up vigilance amid spike in Covid cases
Bhubaneswar: Amidst reports regarding a spike in Covid-19 cases across the country, the Odisha government has intensified its monitoring and containment measures to ensure public health safety across the State, said an official here on Friday. Referring to latest data released by the Health department, a statement noted that a total of 755 samples have been tested in Odisha as of June 6. Of these, 38 samples have returned positive, with 9 individuals already recovered. The remaining 29 patients are in home isolation and reported to be stable. To align State-level strategies with national preparedness, the government of Odisha participated in a high-level virtual review meeting held on June 3, 2025, chaired by Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW), government of India. The meeting included representatives from ICMR institutions, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), State Surveillance Units and various State health authorities. Following the meeting, the Union Health Ministry released a detailed press note noting that India currently has 4,302 active Covid-19 cases, with 864 new cases reported in the past 24 hours. Most of these cases are mild and are being managed at home. Since January 1, 2025, there have been 44 reported Covid-19-related deaths, mainly among individuals with comorbidities. 'Healthcare systems have been directed to ensure adequate oxygen supply, availability of ventilators, isolation beds and essential medicines. Mock drills to test oxygen infrastructure and hospital-level readiness were conducted on June 2. Surveillance of ILI and SARI cases has been intensified, and positive samples are being sent for Whole Genome Sequencing. The public has been advised to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour, including hand hygiene, cough etiquette, self-monitoring and avoiding crowded spaces when symptomatic,' reads the statement. Odisha Public Health Director Nilakantha Mishra had earlier said, 'the Covid-19 situation is stable, with a very limited number of cases detected. No serious cases have been reported, and there have been no deaths.' The Odisha government has reiterated its commitment to strictly implement all precautionary measures and guidelines issued by the Centre, aiming to minimise the impact of the current Covid-19 surge and protect public health. The State government has requested people to remain vigilant, avoid panic and rely only on verified sources such as the MoH&FW website and official bulletins for accurate information.
