'Today, I choose to break my silence': City law enforcement officer probed for domestic violence

The City's Law Enforcement Directorate will be instituting disciplinary action against one of their officers after his estranged partner took to social media with shocking images and allegations of physical abuse.
The Facebook post by Shauna Rhoda shared widely this week, shows images of bruises to her face, legs and arms.
Attempts were made to reach Rhoda via her Facebook account and telephonically but she did not respond.
The post read: 'Today, I choose to break my silence, not just for myself, but for every woman who has suffered in silence, been failed by the system, and told her pain wasn't enough. For years, I endured sexual, mental, and emotional abuse at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect and care for me, a man I was in a relationship with, a father to our two children, and a City of Cape Town law enforcement officer. I will not be silenced, I will not be intimidated. And I will not stop until justice is served not just for me, but for every woman who's ever been told her pain wasn't real enough to matter. To the City of Cape Town, this is who you have representing your badge."

Wayne Dyason, spokesperson for City Law Enforcement, said they will be taking action against the officer.
'The City of Cape Town became aware of the allegations against the officer earlier this month. It is viewed in a serious light and this matter is being dealt with in terms of City policies and processes, including a disciplinary process that will be implemented,' he said.
Siya Monakali, of Ilitha Labantu, said: "We note with serious concern the recent public disclosure made by Shauna Rhoda, who on July 15, used social media to share a deeply painful account of prolonged abuse.
This case raises urgent questions for the City of Cape Town. When those tasked with upholding the law are accused of violating it so gravely, it is not only a matter of internal discipline but of public accountability. The City must act swiftly and transparently to investigate these allegations and demonstrate that it takes such claims seriously." Hoërskool Roodepoort: 19 learners suspended over violent clash
The Gauteng Department of Education has suspended 19 learners from West Ridge High School and Hoërskool Roodepoort following a violent clash which left the Principal stabbed on her hand and three learners suffering serious injuries. The incident happened on Monday, 18 August, following an earlier altercation between learners from the two schools on Friday, 15 August, which was circulated on social media. The South African previously reported that on Monday, 18 August, the situation escalated when a group of West Ridge learners, allegedly seeking revenge, went to Hoërskool Roodepoort, where they attacked learners and pelted cars with stones. Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the Principal of Hoërskool Roodepoort was stabbed while trying to destabilise the situation, and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. However, she has since been discharged. Furthermore, three learners from Hoërskool Roodepoort sustained serious injuries. On Wednesday, 20 August, Mabona told eNCA that they had served at least 19 learners with letters of suspension, and they will not be in school for the next seven days. Mabona said they have already informed and interacted with some parents regarding the incident. 'We just need to make sure that the disciplinary hearing sits. The hearing will assist us with the finer details of what led to the violent act,' he said. Reacting to the incident, MEC Matome Chiloane said it is completely unacceptable that such violence has spilled into schools, where the safety of both learners and educators has now been compromised. Chiloane said it is even more disturbing that a principal, in her efforts to protect learners, was stabbed in the process. 'We will not allow violence and intimidation to take root in our schools, law enforcement must ensure that perpetrators face the full consequences of their actions. Our schools must remain centres of safety, learning, and growth, not battlegrounds,' he said. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Gareth Cliff scores SA government 'ZERO out of 5'
In a scathing analysis of the South African government's track record, radio and television personality Gareth Cliff has given the state a damning 'zero out of five' score across five critical service areas. Those areas are: Security, infrastructure, the economy, education, and health. Citing rampant crime, Eskom's failures, a sinking GDP, and poor literacy rates, Cliff delivers a 'zero out of five' verdict in his Truth Report video. He concludes that the government is failing to provide the basic services expected of it and questions what taxpayers are truly paying for. Lawyer, mother on trial: Teen girl identifies locations of sexual abuse
A 13-year-old girl has identified the guesthouses where she had sex, allegedly with a Heidelberg lawyer and his 'clients', a court heard yesterday. Carel Schoeman and his co-accused, the girl's mother, appeared in a High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, according to the Boksburg Advertiser. Schoeman, the lawyer, faces 26 charges, and the mother faces 72. Both pleaded not guilty to all charges during a previous court appearance. The charges include rape, sexual abuse of a minor, child trafficking, and pointing a firearm. The alleged crimes took place between mid-2022 and early 2023 across various areas in Gauteng, the Free State, and KZN, including Boksburg, Heidelberg, Brakpan, Springs, Villiers, Amanzimtoti, and Ramsgate. In his plea explanation, Schoeman claimed he believed the girl was 19 years old at the time of the alleged offences. During court proceedings yesterday, Warrant Officer Albertus Pelser, who assisted with the investigation, testified that the girl showed the police the locations where she had sexual intercourse, allegedly with Schoeman and several other 'clients'. Pelser said the girl pointed out a resort in Villiers, Free State, and guesthouses in Heidelberg, Brakpan, and Boksburg North. The mother's legal representative, Advocate Harold Davids, asked Pelser under cross-examination whether the girl ever used the term 'rape' or 'sexual exploitation'. Pelser explained that the girl simply told him where the alleged incidents with Schoeman or other men took place. Boksburg senior prosecutor Henk Strydom also testified. Strydom said he had a WhatsApp exchange with Schoeman but never met him professionally or personally. While sharing a printout of the conversation, Strydom highlighted that the document Schoeman sent was a voice note, which contradicts an exported message thread Schoeman submitted to the court. Strydom added he received no report from Schoeman and further testified that he did not delete a message from Schoeman but a message that he wrote to Schoeman. He explained that this message contained his email address. Strydom told the court that he deleted the message because he felt uncomfortable, as Schoeman had already given different versions of events. The trial continues.
