'Today, I choose to break my silence': City law enforcement officer probed for domestic violence

Allegations of domestic violence against a City of Cape Town law enforcement officer have led to an official investigation, following a powerful social media disclosure by Shauna Rhoda.

The City's Law Enforcement Directorate will be instituting disciplinary action against one of their officers after his estranged partner took to social media with shocking images and allegations of physical abuse.
The Facebook post by Shauna Rhoda shared widely this week, shows images of bruises to her face, legs and arms.
Attempts were made to reach Rhoda via her Facebook account and telephonically but she did not respond.
The post read: 'Today, I choose to break my silence, not just for myself, but for every woman who has suffered in silence, been failed by the system, and told her pain wasn't enough. For years, I endured sexual, mental, and emotional abuse at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect and care for me, a man I was in a relationship with, a father to our two children, and a City of Cape Town law enforcement officer. I will not be silenced, I will not be intimidated. And I will not stop until justice is served not just for me, but for every woman who's ever been told her pain wasn't real enough to matter. To the City of Cape Town, this is who you have representing your badge."

Wayne Dyason, spokesperson for City Law Enforcement, said they will be taking action against the officer.
'The City of Cape Town became aware of the allegations against the officer earlier this month. It is viewed in a serious light and this matter is being dealt with in terms of City policies and processes, including a disciplinary process that will be implemented,' he said.
Siya Monakali, of Ilitha Labantu, said: "We note with serious concern the recent public disclosure made by Shauna Rhoda, who on July 15, used social media to share a deeply painful account of prolonged abuse.
This case raises urgent questions for the City of Cape Town. When those tasked with upholding the law are accused of violating it so gravely, it is not only a matter of internal discipline but of public accountability. The City must act swiftly and transparently to investigate these allegations and demonstrate that it takes such claims seriously."
