Junior Pan American Games underway in Paraguay
Athletes aged 14 to 23 are competing in 28 sports and more than 330 medal events, according to Panam Sports.
Core disciplines include athletics, swimming, diving, artistic swimming, gymnastics, cycling, judo, karate, wrestling, taekwondo, rowing, canoeing, sailing, shooting, tennis, table tennis, squash, badminton, weightlifting, triathlon, volleyball and handball.
This year's edition adds eight debut sports: open-water swimming, BMX freestyle, golf, shotgun shooting, water skiing and wakeboard, basketball 5×5, field hockey and rugby sevens.
Most events are being held at Asunción's Olympic Park, along with venues in Luque, Encarnación and Ypacaraí, many of which were upgraded for the 2022 South American Games.
The medal tally began to take shape Sunday, with finals in rowing, shooting and swimming. As of early Monday, Brazil led the tally with 22 medals, followed by Chile and Colombia with 12 and the United States with 10.
Host nation Paraguay has its largest-ever delegation with 320 athletes. Brazil, the United States, Colombia, Chile and Argentina are expected to dominate the medal table based on past results. Organizers say the competition also serves as a key qualifier for the 2027 Pan American Games in Barranquilla, Colombia.
The Games are streamed live on Panam Sports Channel, with broadcasts by local partners across the Americas. Panam Sports projects a combined in-person and broadcast audience of about 50 million people.
Local authorities estimate the event will generate more than $300 million in economic activity through tourism, infrastructure upgrades and services, with more than 5,700 international visitors expected and hotel occupancy rates surpassing 80% in Asunción.
Paraguay's Ministry of Sports also announced that more than 8,000 volunteers are assisting with logistics, operations and hospitality, marking the largest volunteer program ever organized for a sporting event in the country.
First held in Cali, Colombia, in 2021, the Junior Pan American Games aim to give young athletes a pathway to senior-level competition while fostering regional sports development.

Williams is one of eight women who obtained wild card draws for the competition that begins with qualifying rounds on Tuesday, the U.S. Open announced on Wednesday. The main event runs from Aug. 24 through Sept. 7. Williams won consecutive U.S. Open singles titles in 2000 and 2001 and last month ended a 16-month hiatus from competitive tennis when she entered the Citi Open in Washington. She defeated Peyton Stearns, the world's 35th-ranked women's singles player, 6-3, 6-4, during her opening match in that tournament. Poland's Magdalena Fręch was the tournament's fifth seed and defeated Williams, 6-2, 6-2, but Williams secured a wild card invite to compete in the Cincinnati Open, which started on Aug. 5 and ends on Monday. Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro beat Williams, 6-4, 6-4, on Thursday in the Cincinnati Open. Other U.S. women who earned wild card draws in the U.S. Open are Clervie Ngounoue, Alyssa Ahn, JulietaPareja, Caty McNally and Valerie Gloxman. Pareja, 16, is the world's top-ranked junior, while Ngounoue, 19, is the former top-ranked junior and won her first Women's Tennis Association main draw at the Cincinnati Open. Caroline Garcia of France and Talia Gibson of Australia also received wild-card main draws for the U.S. Open. The main draw wild cards mean Williams and other recipients don't have to play in the U.S. Open's qualifying tournament, which is held from Monday through Aug. 20 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City's Queens borough. Williams has won five Wimbledon titles in addition to her two U.S. Open wins for a total of seven Grand Slam singles titles, plus four Olympic gold medals and one silver medal. She also has won 14 major doubles titles. The U.S. Open news wasn't the only highlight for Williams on Wednesday. Toymaker Mattel on Wednesday also announced it is producing a Venus Williams Barbie Doll as part of its "Inspiring Women Series" dolls. The Williams doll wears a tennis outfit and visor while holding a tennis racket, which is modeled after one of her prior tournament outfits.

Sha'Carri Richardson addresses domestic violence arrest and apologizes to boyfriend
Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson addressed her recent domestic violence arrest in a video on social media and issued an apology to her boyfriend Christian Coleman. Richardson posted a video on her Instagram account Monday night in which she said she put herself in a 'compromised situation.' She issued a written apology to Coleman on Tuesday morning. 'I love him & to him I can't apologize enough,' the reigning 100-meter world champion wrote in all capital letters on Instagram, adding that her apology 'should be just as loud' as her 'actions.' 'To Christian I love you & I am so sorry,' she wrote. Richardson was arrested July 27 on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense for allegedly assaulting Coleman at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. She was booked into South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, for more than 18 hours. Her arrest was days before she ran the 100 meters at the U.S. championships in Eugene, Oregon. In the video, Richardson said she's practicing 'self-reflection' and refuses 'to run away but face everything that comes to me head on.' According to the police report, an officer at the airport was notified by a Transportation Security Administration supervisor of a disturbance between Richardson and her boyfriend, Coleman, the 2019 world 100-meter champion. The officer reviewed camera footage and observed Richardson reach out with her left arm and grab Coleman's backpack and yank it away. Richardson then appeared to get in Coleman's way with Coleman trying to step around her. Coleman was shoved into a wall. Later in the report, it said Richardson appeared to throw an item at Coleman, with the TSA indicating it may have been headphones. The officer said in the report: 'I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim.' A message was left with Coleman from The Associated Press. Richardson wrote that Coleman 'came into my life & gave me more than a relationship but a greater understanding of unconditional love from what I've experienced in my past.' She won the 100 at the 2023 world championships in Budapest and finished with the silver at the Paris Games last summer. She also helped the 4x100 relay to an Olympic gold. positive marijuana test at the U.S. Olympic trials.

Buffalo Bills, running back James Cook agree to 4-year, $48M extension

The pact includes $30 million guaranteed, the most paid to a running back in the last five years. Cook, 25, was entering the final year of his rookie contract. The fourth-year running back totaled a career-high 1,567 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns over 17 games in 2023. He totaled 1,267 yards from scrimmage and scored 18 times, including a league-high and franchise record-tying 16 rushing touchdowns, over 16 starts in 2024. Cook was in full uniform and a full participant in practice Tuesday, ending a four-day hold-in. He also missed the Bills' first preseason game. The Bills will participate in a joint practice with the Chicago Bears on Friday in Chicago, and the Bears will host the Bills in their second preseason game at 8 p.m. EDT Sunday in Chicago. They will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their preseason finale Aug. 23 in Tampa, Fla. Cook and the Bills will host the Baltimore Ravens in their regular season opener Sept. 7 in Orchard Park, N.Y.
