Lakers to Unveil Statue of Former Coach Pat Riley Before Game Against Celtics

The Los Angeles Lakers will unveil a statue of former coach Pat Riley on Feb. 22, as the Hall of Famer joins the likes of former team greats Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant in bronze outside their downtown arena.
The Lakers will fittingly honor Riley against their long-time rival, the Boston Celtics.
Riley coached the Lakers from from 1981 to 1990 during the team's "Showtime" era and won four NBA championships (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988). He led the Lakers through one of the most dynamic eras for any team in NBA history. With Johnson and Abdul-Jabbar leading an exciting roster with a groundbreaking fast-break offense, the Lakers went 533-194 (.733) in Riley's tenure and added 102 playoff victories over nine seasons.
The Lakers won at least 50 games in each of his nine seasons as coach and they won at least 60 games in five straight seasons. He was named NBA Coach of the Year with the Lakers in 1989-90.
He played for Los Angeles from 1970 to 1975, and was a team broadcaster before becoming Paul Westhead's assistant in 1979. Riley was part of the 1971=72 team that won a league-record 33 straight games and won the NBA championship.

The 80-year-old Riley also coached the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat. He won another championship as coach with the Heat in 2006 and now serves as their team president.
Just last season, the Heat named the court in their downtown arena after Riley in a ceremony attended by many of his former players.
Riley will become the eighth Lakers luminary to be honored with a statue in Star Plaza, which has become a popular tourist attraction for fans of the globally popular franchise. The others are Abdul-Jabbar, Johnson, Bryant, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Shaquille O'Neal and broadcaster Chick Hearn.

Brooklyn Nets jersey history No. 22 - Ed Manning (1974-75)
The Brooklyn Nets have 52 jersey numbers worn by over 600 different players over the course of their history since the franchise was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), when the team was known as the "New Jersey Americans". Since then, that league has been absorbed by the NBA with the team that would later become the New York Nets and New Jersey Nets before settling on the name by which they are known today, bringing their rich player and jersey history with them to the league of today. The 23rd of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 22, which has has had a total of 31 players wear the number in the history of the team. The ninth of those players wearing No. 22 played in the (then) New York (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, forward alum Ed Manning. After ending his college career at Jackson State University, Manning was picked up with the 80th overall selection (there were many more rounds in that era of the draft) of the 1967 NBA Draft by the (defunct) Baltimore Bullets. The Summit, Mississippi native would play parts of the first three seasons of his pro career with the Bullets. He also played for the Chicago Bulls, Portland Trail Blazers, and (defunct) Carolina Cougars in the ABA before he signed with New York in 1974. His stay with the team would span a single season, coming to an end when he was dealt to the Indiana Pacers in 1975. Watch: Luka Doncic highlights versus Latvia on Saturday
Luka Doncic took the court for his second friendly leading up to EuroBasket 2025 on Saturday when his native Slovenia took on Latvia. He had missed his team's previous two games, but on Saturday, he put on a show. His onslaught was aborted when he suffered a knee injury that was later diagnosed as a knee contusion that isn't believed to be serious. But before that, Doncic looked like his best self. In the first half of Saturday's contest, he had 26 points and five assists, and as he often does, he put up his numbers with some flair and spark. In all, Doncic shot 7-of-15 overall, 5-of-11 from 3-point range and made all seven of his free throw attempts. But Latvia outscored Slovenia 27-13 in the third quarter and won, 100-88. In Slovenia's first friendly last Friday, Doncic scored 19 points and dished out five dimes. The team's next game will be on Tuesday, Aug. 19 versus Great Britain. It will begin its official EuroBasket schedule on Aug. 28 with a contest against Poland. It remains to be seen how long Doncic will be out due to the knee contusion he suffered on Saturday. However, it sounds like Los Angeles Lakers fans don't need to be too concerned about his availability for training camp and the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season.

Luka Doncic suffered an injury scare in Slovenia friendly on Saturday
Luka Doncic sat out Slovenia's last two friendlies in recent days, but on Saturday, he was back on the court as his native country continued to prepare for EuroBasket 2025 by taking on Latvia. It provided Los Angeles Lakers fans to get another glimpse of him and his new and improved physique during midsummer as they wait for the new NBA season to get underway. However, disaster seemed to strike when Doncic collided with a teammate and appeared to injure his knee. To that point, he had posted 26 points and five assists in the first half, and he was forced to leave the game. The good news is that, per Dan Woike of The Athletic, the superstar didn't suffer any serious or significant injury. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Doncic has a right knee contusion. Some Lakers fans have been concerned that since Doncic is representing his country this summer, he may either suffer an injury or simply take some unnecessary wear and tear into the 2025-26 NBA season. However, injuries can happen at any time, and after all, LeBron James, at age 39, played for Team USA men's basketball last summer without getting hurt while helping to deliver a gold medal.
