Wrexham 77-year-old takes on 140-mile charity walk
Barry Hughes, from Wrexham is proving that age is no barrier when it comes to fundraising.
The well-known community champion set off on an 'inspiring' 140-mile sponsored walk alongside his son, Stephen Hughes, an Army veteran, to raise funds for Advance Brighter Futures and 2wish Cymru, two charities that offer vital support to those facing mental health challenges and bereavement.

The father and son duo set off from Holywell on Monday (April 21), where they were waved off by friend, family and Deputy Mayor Tina Mannering.
The pair are faced with a 140-mile walk along the North Wales coast to Bardsey Island.

Barry is no stranger to raising money for charity, having been involved in the running of the Activ8 Community Sports Centre in Bradley for the past 25 years.
Over the years, he has completed numerous charity walks, consistently raising money for various causes and making a tangible difference to the lives of those around him.
Barry's daughter Jessica Correia, has said her father is an "inspiration" to all their family.
She added: "My dad is kind, compassionate, and always ready to help anyone in need. He's old school and direct, something people have come to love and respect about him.
"Through running the Activ8 Community Sports Centre, he's supported and guided so many over the years, from the lively mornings with the 'Pensioners Club' to coaching the children's Wrexham Judo Club. This walk is simply a continuation of the selfless work he's always done to help others.
"Over the years, my dad has taken on many charity walks including the Three Peaks, but I truly believe this is his biggest challenge yet. At 77, he still thinks he's 27, and anyone who knows him knows that once he sets his mind to something, there's no stopping him!
"As a family, we've reminded him just how tough this challenge will be, but his determination to help others is unwavering. We're incredibly grateful to our brother Stephen, who is walking alongside him and helping to raise awareness for these amazing charities that do such important work.
"Our whole family, along with the volunteers supporting Dad on this journey, couldn't be prouder. He's truly an inspiration to us all."

Advance Brighter Futures launches Baton of Hope in Wrexham
Advance Brighter Futures (ABF) began the Wrexham leg of the 2025 Baton of Hope Tour at Erddig on Thursday, May 22. The charity, which promotes mental wellbeing, has been delivering suicide prevention training and awareness across the city for the past year and a half. Wrexham is one of 20 locations on the Baton of Hope Tour, the UK's largest suicide prevention initiative. The tour will culminate in a journey through the city on Saturday, October 4, 2025. The baton will be carried by more than 70 bearers, all of whom have been affected by suicide. Zoe Whitehead, project lead for Baton of Hope Wrexham and business development officer at ABF, said: "This is a community-led initiative from start to finish – driven by lived experience, supported by volunteers, and shaped by local people and places that have felt the impact of suicide. "I know what it feels like to reach that point of hopelessness. "But I also know what it feels like to come through the other side. "It's been a real privilege to be part of ABF's work around suicide prevention over the past few years – supporting communities, raising awareness and opening up conversations around suicide. "Being involved in Baton of Hope is a big but natural step forward for us as a charity – bringing everything we've learned and built together into one powerful day for Wrexham." Susan Dray, who lost her son Daniel to suicide in 2021, is also the project lead for the Wrexham leg of the tour. She said: "When we realised the connection between Daniel and ABF, it gave us both goosebumps. "It genuinely feels like Daniel brought us together. "I'm doing this for him – but also to prevent other families having to go through what we have. "We're already seeing the difference it's making. "People are opening up, sharing their experiences, and starting conversations and that's exactly what this is all about – getting people talking." The Baton of Hope, designed by Thomas Lyte, the makers of the FA Cup, symbolises mental wellbeing and carries stories of loss, survival, and hope. It was created by two parents who lost their sons to suicide and wanted to turn pain into purpose. The launch event was held in Erddig last month (Image: Andrew Bond, AB Photography) On October 4, the baton will begin its journey at Caffi Wylfa in Chirk and end at Wrexham University, stopping at various Hope Hubs along the way. These hubs will host community events with music, performances, speakers, activities, and stalls from organisations offering support. They include Chirk Castle, Pontcysyllte Chapel Tea Rooms, Advance Brighter Futures, and Ty Pawb. Ms Whitehead added: "We want the tour and Hope Hubs to be an opportunity for people to come together, start conversations, and show support to those impacted by suicide." Hiking feat for Hope House Tŷ Gobaith children's hospices
The 26-strong team from the manufacturing engineering operations department of Airbus UK in Broughton, are taking on the revered Three Peaks challenge on Friday (June 13) and raising funds for Hope House Tŷ Gobaith children's hospices. Starting at Scotland's Ben Nevis at about 2pm, they will then travel in coaches down to Scafell Pike in the Lake District, which they will traverse overnight, to finish at Wales' highest point, Yr Wyddfa on the Saturday afternoon. Claudia McKinlay from the team, said: "We're really excited for it. As well as giving to this amazing charity, it's fantastic team building. Thomas Carroll Celebrates Decade-Long Partnership with Tŷ Hafan
Two teams of employees will take on the Welsh Three Peaks challenge as the next big next fundraising event in June. Thomas Carroll, independent insurance, risk, wealth management and insurtech company, is celebrating a 10-year partnership with children's hospice charity Tŷ Hafan, raising £122,150.33 in vital funds since the relationship began. To mark this milestone, Thomas Carroll is the headline sponsor of Tŷ Hafan's Welsh Three Peaks Challenge 2025, taking place on Saturday, 7 June. This single-day adventure spans over 20 miles and involves a total ascent of 9,397 feet, conquering the three highest peaks in Wales – Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Cadair Idris, and Pen y Fan, which will be a true test of endurance, team spirit, and determination. Two dedicated teams from Thomas Carroll will be taking on the challenge for a second year running, with additional colleagues providing vital on-the-ground support. The firm hopes to raise significant funds for Tŷ Hafan, which has been providing life-changing care and support to children with life-shortening conditions and their families across Wales since 1999.
