Sunbed wars 'like scene out of Hunger Games' as frantic tourists rush to bag loungers

Sue Herrijgers, 17, and her brother Matt, 25, were left stunned as fellow guests staged a daily 9am dash to bag the best loungers at the Akasha Beach Hotel and Spa in Crete, Greece Holidaymakers at a £336-a-night luxury resort were seen sprinting for poolside sunbeds in scenes reminiscent of The Hunger Games. ‌ One guest, Sue Herrijgers, 17, and her older brother Matt, 25, had anticipated a relaxed summer break at the Akasha Beach Hotel and Spa in Crete. However, instead of tranquillity and pampering, the siblings were left gobsmacked as fellow guests staged a daily 9am rush to secure the best loungers. ‌ Sue even captured the mayhem from her balcony, showing holidaymakers dashing like Olympians the moment the pool opened. A swarm of guests descended around the pool and claimed the luxurious beds, some of which were perched over the water. They marked their territory by leaving their towels on the sunbeds for the day. "It's like watching The Hunger Games with a bed as a trophy," Sue, from the Netherlands, joked to Luxury Travel Daily. ‌ Sue and Matt often travel together with their mum Judith, who uses a wheelchair, and expressed their disappointment at seeing their favourite hotel overrun by ruthless sunbed hunters. Judith commented: "As you can see, it was a real struggle to get a sunbed. A few years ago, when Sue and her brother were also staying there, guests weren't leaving towels or other items. There were always beds available, even though the hotel was fully booked." She stated: "The bad behaviour of other hotel guests with the sunbeds can really have a negative impact on others' holidays. It's a five star hotel, so what they booked was a luxurious and quite expensive stay." ‌ Unfortunately for holidaymakers, 'sunbed wars' have become part and parcel of holidays across Europe in recent years, with countless videos surfacing of people frantically rushing to place their towels down on sunbeds and unofficially 'reserve' them for the day. For example, holidaymakers were spotted using a sneaky tactic which others dubbed as "pathetic", before the pool staff had even laid out the loungers. Tensions are caused when people do this but don't return for sometimes hours at a time, meaning the sunbeds are empty but other holidaymakers can't use them. As a result, hotels have been trying to put in strict rules to try and mitigate the chaos. One couple was recently left furious after leaving their sunbeds and coming back to find a stern note from staff warning them that their belongings could be removed if left unattended for too long. Meanwhile in Spain, there have been a number of measures introduced to stop the practice on beaches including hefty fines for rule-breakers. In popular spots such as Barcelona and Costa Blanca, beachgoers can be fined €250 for reserving sunbeds, following numerous complaints about sunbeds being reserved for hours with no one in sight. Police have the power to remove unattended sunbeds or towels on the beach before 9.30am, with people's belongings being placed in a municipal depot. Rule-breakers will then have to head to the depot to get their stuff back, and pay the £210 fine in the process. The rules aren't just for tourists who lay out a towel; anyone who leaves their spot unattended for over three hours will also be subject to the same regulations.

'Super easy' protein-rich food that 'boosts heart health' is loved by athletes

A food and flavour expert has shared some of the foods that are popular among Olympic athletes - not just for performance but also overall health A health expert has revealed the top food choices of athletes that can help us mere mortals stay healthy and battle chronic diseases. Elite athletes need food that not only fuels them during gruelling training sessions and competitions, but also aids recovery after intense workouts. ‌ Plus, a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential to maintain overall health and ward off injuries or illnesses. In short, athletes require the right grub to power up. ‌ Food and flavour whizz Matt Webster, from Seasoned Pioneers, has now spilt the beans on what athletes love to eat and how these foods contribute to a healthier and happier lifestyle. Salmon tops the list. ‌ "A key element of any Olympian's diet is protein," Matt explained. "A lot of athletes' food goals involve getting plenty of protein while also keeping inflammation down "This fish is packed full with omega-3 fatty acids – a nutrient that's linked to a variety of things such as improving heart and lung health, strengthening your joints and also boosting your immune system. Salmon is a fantastic source of protein – the vital factor in muscle growth that helps the process of replacing damaged muscle tissue." Matt isn't alone in his opinion - according to Outside Magazine, it's a fantastically healthy oily fish. It's packed with lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce inflammation that can hamper athletic performance and contribute to chronic conditions like heart disease. Matt also mentioned other foods that athletes adore for their health benefits - even if you're not vying for Olympic gold, reports Wales Online. Cayenne pepper Capsaicin, the compound that gives cayenne pepper its heat, has been found to suppress appetite and modestly increase energy expenditure and circulation. It also binds to receptors in the brain, nerves and blood vessels associated with pain relief. Ground cayenne is widely used in cuisines around the world, particularly in Latin American, Caribbean, Indian, Thai, and Mexican cooking, and is known for its medicinal properties. When it comes to spices, Cayenne is super easy to incorporate into a variety of dishes, making it an essential spice for aspiring Olympians. ‌ Peanut butter You'll be chuffed to hear that peanut butter is a favourite among many athletes. However, it does need to be pure peanut butter without additives like sugars, oils and salts. If you can find the right stuff, it's a fantastic source of vitamin E, as well as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These are brilliant for lowering cholesterol levels in your blood and they're also crucial for bolstering your immune system, accelerating post-training recovery times and preventing injury. Peanut butter is packed with protein while also being a fantastic source of niacin and folic acids, both of which aid in converting food into energy. Plus, it's calorie-dense, ensuring your energy levels are sustained throughout tough workouts. ‌ Legumes Legumes are a natural protein-carbohydrate combo. This is vital for many endurance athletes, as you need carbs to fuel your muscles and protein to build and repair them. They also have a low-glycaemic index. This means they're slow to digest and provide prolonged energy. ‌ Low GI foods are excellent choices for endurance sports, as you generally can't eat anything during the workout. The soluble fibre in legumes also helps guard against heart disease by reducing the cholesterol in your blood. Eggs Just one egg provides 10 per cent of all your daily protein needs. It's one of the most complete food proteins available. Inside this high-quality protein are all of the amino acids necessary for your muscles to promote their recovery and repair processes. Apart from vitamin C, consuming two eggs a day can supply between 10 per cent to 30 per cent of all your vitamin requirements. ‌ That includes vitamin K, which is a crucial component for healthy bones. If you don't eat eggs, you really should. Dark chocolate It's been shown to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as aid in decreasing inflammation. The caffeine found in dark chocolate is also believed to provide a longer-lasting energy boost, helping you to exercise for extended periods. To sweeten the deal even further, research has discovered that dark chocolate can enhance your body's efficiency in utilising oxygen. Just two or three squares are all you really need. If you can find a bar with almonds and other nuts included, that's even better.

Tourists visit 'most boring place in the UK' to see if it deserves reputation

Two tourists decided to spend a day in a 'boring' British location to see if it really was as bad as people make it out to be – and they were surprised by what they found For years, the Berkshire town of Slough has earned a reputation as one of Britain's worst places to call home, as it's often named both the ugliest and most boring place in the UK. The area is plagued with shuttered shop fronts and abandoned high streets. But two tourists decided to see just how bad it truly was. ‌ Posting on TikTok, Liam Dowling from Australia and Matt Giffen from Canada chose to spend a day in Slough to determine whether it genuinely lived up to its dismal reputation. And they were shocked to what they found as they arrived there. ‌ Liam asked viewers: "Okay, can a Canadian and an Aussie have fun in the most boring place in the UK? That's what Google and ChatGPT said is Slough... Come with us on a day is what's known to be the worst place and see if we can have fun." ‌ "How bad could it really be?" Matt wondered, appearing to maintain a positive attitude about the town at first. Their first port of call was the local Wetherspoons, named 'The Moon and the Spoon'. Inside, they encountered some residents and sought suggestions for activities. Hilariously, a man quickly recommended hopping back on the train to explore somewhere else entirely, which caught Liam off guard. The pair then ventured outside, where they seized the chance to quiz additional locals about attractions in the vicinity. One resident quickly said: "There's nothing here." A bewildered Matt questioned: "Why does everyone keep saying that?". ‌ The bloke didn't hold back with his candid response as he said: "Because it's a dump." After persuading Matt to down a shot, Liam declared: "Now we're having fun." The duo then pressed on with their mission to uncover some entertainment. They found themselves wandering down the high street in central Slough, which locals had branded 'the worst place on Earth'. ‌ One resident even warned them not to trust a soul in the town. Nevertheless, they made their way to Chicking Chicken Shop, one of the few local places that had come recommended. Despite being tucked away in what appeared to be a deserted shopping centre, Liam and Matt were blown away by their meal. ‌ Liam raved: "Bro, that is unreal. That's the most amazing chicken shop wings I've ever had. Slough might not have a shopping centre or anything else, but they have great chicken shop wings." Their adventure continued at another pub called The Brickhouse, before they headed to Slough Ice Arena for some ice skating. "See guys, you can have fun wherever you go. You just got to do fun stuff," Liam remarked whilst gliding across the ice. ‌ For their next meal, the pair grabbed a pizza from Pizza GoGo. They wrapped up the video back at the local Spoons, before catching their train out of Slough. Reflecting on their adventure, Liam concluded: "It's been an interesting day." Matt concurred, saying: "Here's the thing, it's not a fun place, but we had fun together." Liam finished the clip on an upbeat note, adding: "The one thing I will say is the people here, everyone was so friendly, so nice... Slough, we had as much fun as we could."
