Fact Check: Karoline Leavitt didn't say, 'Avoid woke things like math, and you'll love the tariffs'
Claim:
An image circulating online in April 2025 authentically showed a screenshot from a Fox News interview with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt that displayed a chyron reading: "Leavitt: 'Avoid woke things like math, and you'll love the tariffs.'"
Rating:
In April 2025, an image circulated on social media that purportedly showed a screenshot from a Fox News interview featuring White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt (archived). The screenshot contained a chyron at the bottom of the screen that read: "Leavitt: 'Avoid woke things like math, and you'll love the tariffs.'"
The image appeared on Instagram, Bluesky, Reddit, 9GAG, Threads, iFunny and Tumblr, where social media users seemed to take it at face value. On X, one user, whose post (archived) had amassed more than 2.7 million views as of this writing, captioned the image: "Math is woke and is to be avoided."

While some social media users believed the screenshot was genuine and criticized Leavitt's supposed remarks, others questioned its authenticity.
However, the image was manipulated. It originated as a screenshot of a genuine Fox News interview with Leavitt, but the chyron displayed at the bottom of the screen featuring the alleged quote had been superimposed onto the screenshot. The original chyron read: "One-on-one with Karoline Leavitt." Therefore, we have rated the image as fake.
The image originated from a Feb. 10, 2025, Fox News interview with Leavitt. It can be found on Fox News' website and is also available on the Fox News YouTube channel under the title: "Karoline Leavitt: Democrats learned nothing from their devastating defeat."
(foxnews.com)
At no point during the interview did the White House press secretary say people will love the tariffs if they "avoid woke things like math," nor did she make any similar statement. Additionally, a Google search found no reports from any credible news outlet supporting the claim.
In addition to the fabricated quote, the fake screenshot showed several inconsistencies that suggested it was digitally altered. For instance, the font was a different style from, and slightly thicker than, the one typically used by Fox News, as was the format of the text.
Below is a side-by-side comparison of the doctored screenshot (on the left) and the original (on the right). As can be seen, the original chyron read: "One-on-one with Karoline Leavitt."

It was not possible to definitively state the source of the manipulated version of the screenshot.
Leavitt has served as both a subject and a source of questionable rumors, a selection of which is detailed in this collection.

Castro to seek reelection to state Senate rather than make U.S. House bid
State Sen. Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, has announced she will seek reelection to her District 22 post rather than make a bid next year for the Congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Raja Krisnamoorthi. 'When I first entered public service, it was with a singular goal: to deliver for my community and make life better for the people of the 22nd District, who I've been lucky to call my neighbors for my entire life,' Castro said in a news release. 'Over the past eight years as state senator, I'm proud to have stayed true to that mission — delivering real results and championing the working families of my district. As I think about the future and how I can continue to make the biggest impact, that goal remains my North Star.' In addition to Elgin, Castro's district encompasses all or part of 10 communities in Cook and Kane counties. Her statement came the same week that state Rep. Anna Moeller, D-Elgin, also announced she also would seek reelection to the House instead of making a bid for Congress. Krishnamoorthi, who represents the 8th District in the U.S. House, has announced plans to run in the primary for the seat currently held by U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, who plans to retire. Both he and Durbin are Democrats, as are two other candidates who have announced they're running for the job: Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Matteson. Castro, elected to the state Senate in 2016, is the majority caucus whip for the 103rd General Assembly, chair of the Senate Executive Committee, and a member of the Latino Caucus, according to her website biography. She serves on the Appropriations, Energy and Public Utilities, Insurance, Labor and Revenue committees. Prior to being elected to the state Senate, she served on the Kane County Board from 2008 to 2016. Castro holds an associate degree from Elgin Community College and bachelor's and master's degree in business administration from Northern Illinois University.

Hunter Biden drops lawsuit against Fox News
Hunter Biden on Friday dropped a lawsuit against Fox News that accused the right-wing network of unlawfully airing sexually explicit images of him. This is the second time Hunter Biden has filed and then voluntarily dismissed a lawsuit against Fox News. The cases stemmed from a 2022 digital miniseries that featured a dramatized 'mock trial' against Hunter Biden about his overseas financial dealings. Lawyers for former President Joe Biden's son claimed Fox News violated 'revenge porn' laws and defamed him. They did not explain in court filings why they dropped the case, though they recently lost an effort to move the case from federal to New York state court. CNN has reached out to Hunter Biden's lawyers seeking comment. In a statement sent to CNN, a Fox News Media spokesperson said, 'We are pleased to move on now that Hunter Biden has finally voluntarily withdrawn this meritless case which proved to be nothing more than a politically motivated stunt.' The Fox series highlighted Hunter Biden's lucrative business deals in Ukraine and China, which he pursued his father was vice president. It also delved into his admitted struggles with drug abuse and alcoholism. The program also featured some intimate images of Hunter Biden with various women, which appeared to originate from his infamous laptop. After he threatened a lawsuit in April 2024, the miniseries was taken down from the Fox Nation streaming site. He sued Fox anyway last summer, dropped the case after a few weeks, filed a new lawsuit in October, and dropped that case on Friday. In a court filing, his lawyers said he was dropping the case 'with prejudice,' meaning he can't file it again. Hunter Biden was convicted last year on federal gun charges and pleaded guilty to tax crimes related to his overseas deals. However, he was never accused of illegally lobbying the US government on behalf of his foreign clients, as was portrayed in the Fox miniseries. Before he could be sentenced — and potentially sent to prison — his father issued a full pardon in December, despite repeatedly pledging that he would not grant any clemency.

Trump Responds To Elon Musk's Comments About A 'New Political Party'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. President Donald Trump weighed in Friday on billionaire Elon Musk's threat to form a new political party to challenge Democrats and Republicans. The Context Trump and Musk had a high-profile alliance during the 2024 campaign and during the first few months of Trump's second term, with Musk spending millions of dollars to help Trump get elected in November and Trump later tapping him to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But their relationship has devolved in the last several days, as Musk excoriated the Trump-backed "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" as "outrageous" and "pork-filled," adding that it's a "disgusting abomination." Trump hit back at his onetime close ally, saying Musk has gone "crazy," accusing him of having "Trump derangement syndrome" and threatening the cancel government contracts with Musk's companies. What To Know The SpaceX CEO on Thursday floated the idea of forming a "new political party in America that "actually represents the 80% in the middle." Fox News reported on Friday that Trump responded to Musk's comments in a phone call with Fox News host Bret Baier, saying he's not worried about the threat. "Trump is not interested in talking to Elon," Fox News host and Trump's former press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on the network while summarizing the phone call. "Trump is not worried about threats of a third party ... President Trump also pointed to his favorable polls and his strong support among Capitol Hill Republicans." Fox is reporting that Bret Baier just spoke with Trump and Trump said he is not interested in speaking with Elon Musk. Trump also said: Elon Musk has totally lost it — Acyn (@Acyn) June 6, 2025 The White House confirmed Friday that Trump has no plans to contact Musk. Trump also plans to sell the Tesla he bought earlier this year, which was once showcased on the White House lawn as a symbol of the president's alignment with Musk. This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
