A good look at Good Night, and Good Luck; George Clooney's timely revival of truth on trial

Time of India4 hours ago

Amid mounting unrest over sweeping
ICE raids
in Los Angeles, with protests erupting in Westlake, Paramount, and downtown, some met with flashbangs, tear gas, and the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops,
CNN
offered a cultural counterpoint.
On Saturday, June 7, the network aired Good Night, and Good Luck live from Broadway, making television history as the first full
Broadway production
to be broadcast in real time on a major network.
Staged at New York's Winter Garden Theatre, the event featured
George Clooney
in a lead role and was introduced by CNN anchor Pamela Brown. It was followed by post-show analysis from Anderson Cooper.

Part
political theatre
, part media spectacle, the broadcast turned a historic play about journalistic integrity into a timely reflection of current events, unfolding against a backdrop of political tension and public protest.
Live Events
CNN's decision to televise the production aligns with its recent attempts to reframe prime-time programming, and many observers hailed the event as both a creative gamble and a bold political statement.
A politically timed revival
The play, co-written and headlined by Clooney, revisits legendary CBS newsman
Edward R. Murrow
's takedown of Senator Joseph McCarthy during the 1950s Red Scare. Premiering amid heightened debate around
press freedom
, media integrity, and authoritarian political trends in the U.S., the production clearly resonates with today's headlines.
Though subdued compared to David Strathairn's Oscar-nominated film portrayal, Clooney's performance conveyed Murrow's quiet steel.
The actor-director also helped shape the narrative to reflect today's fractured media landscape, integrating archival imagery, authentic cable graphics, and modern references, including Elon Musk and surveillance politics. Critics noted how this juxtaposition lent fresh urgency to a familiar historical tale.
From a technical standpoint, the production took daring creative liberties. It used screens to project close-ups of
Clooney
and other actors as they delivered lines, emulating a newsroom in tone and format.
Critics from the Los Angeles Times praised this innovation, calling the broadcast 'one of the most stirring offerings of the Broadway season', a rare crossover that made theater more accessible while still carrying artistic weight.
Still, some pointed out the irony: high ticket prices and a near-Hollywood cast drew criticism when the show first opened on Broadway, with some theatergoers claiming it priced out traditional audiences. Saturday's CNN airing, free to the public, helped counter that criticism and widened access.
Mixed reactions
This iconic performance sparked a wide range of reactions online. While many lauded the play's political relevance and Clooney's daring as a producer, others found the staging occasionally static and the symbolism heavy-handed.
One Reddit user commented, 'Seeing Broadway on CNN was surreal, but watching Murrow fight McCarthyism in 2025 felt more relevant than ever.'
Despite critiques, the project was a commercial hit. The production recently broke box office records by earning more than $4 million in a single week, boosted by five Tony nominations, including Best Leading Actor for Clooney.
A Broadcast that stood for something
Above all, Clooney's
Good Night and Good Luck
succeeded in its larger mission: reasserting journalism's role in safeguarding democracy. As Murrow famously warned in the play and the original film, 'This instrument can teach, it can illuminate... but it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends.'

"India and our delegation received a very positive response", says Priyanka Chaturvedi after delegation's visit

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi , who was part of the Group-2 delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ravi Shankar Prasad , said on Sunday that the team received a very positive response from European nations regarding India's stance against terrorism. Speaking to about the trip, Chaturvedi said, "India and our delegation have received a very positive response. This shows that the world understands the fear of terrorism, and it is very important to stay united to address this issue... Everyone is united and equivocal about the fact that terrorism in all its forms has to be condemned." She added that the delegation engaged in talks with government officials, ministers, think tanks, and media representatives across Europe, all of whom expressed consistent support for India's long-standing fight against terrorism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo "We went to six different countries and had discussions with media, think-tanks, govt officials, ministers... Everyone believes that the way India has been fighting for decades against terrorism sponsored by Pakistan, the same way countries in Western Europe are facing the same kind of challenges. We told the countries that Pakistan takes loans from the IMF to protect its terror camps. Europe has condemned terrorism in all its forms..." Chaturvedi said. She further exposed how Pakistan has been misleading the world with false narratives. "A completely fake narrative was being spread by their (Pakistan) army as well. Their own Generals were putting video war games in their press conferences and making all sorts of claims. We got a sense of clarity from the officials we met. The Foreign Minister of Germany totally condemned this, and to ensure accountability, everyone is anonymous." Live Events Chaturvedi also noted the wide reach of the delegation's efforts, saying, "This was a successful trip... These 7 delegations had meetings in almost 40 countries. I believe its outcome will be positive. Whether it is the United Nations, the IMF or the World Bank, everyone will adopt an accountability approach towards Pakistan ." The team, led by BJP MP Prasad, visited six nations and held high-level meetings on the issue of terrorism, where they strongly highlighted Pakistan's role in sponsoring terror. Earlier in the day, the all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad returned to India after a diplomatic tour of several European nations. The delegation arrived at the airport in the national capital following a multi-nation visit aimed at strengthening India's ties with European partners. Speaking to the media upon arrival, Prasad said, "It feels great to be back in India. Our delegation visited France, Italy, Denmark, England, Brussels and Germany. We met senior leaders of the Parliament, think-tank and the Indian community. The foreign nations have a lot of anger over the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, and all the nations have condemned this. We went to the European Parliament as well. The Indian community was very excited to meet us. A new relationship is going to be established between India and Europe. It was a very satisfying visit..." The recent visit by the all-party Group-2 delegation, led by BJP MP Prasad, took place amid growing international concern over terror attacks, notably the Pahalgam incident in Jammu and Kashmir, which has drawn widespread condemnation from global partners.

Israel-Gaza conflict: Thai hostage Nattapong Pinta's body recovered; 95 Palestinians killed in fresh strikes

Photo provided by the Hostage's Family Forum shows Nattapong Pinta, with his wife and son (Image: AP) Israel on Saturday said it had recovered the body of a Thai hostage taken into Gaza during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. The announcement came as fighting intensified, with Gaza health officials reporting at least 95 more Palestinians killed in the past 24 hours. The Thai hostage was identified as Nattapong Pinta, who had travelled to Israel to work in agriculture and was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz during the October attack that sparked the ongoing war. Israel said his body was recovered in the Rafah area of southern Gaza. Authorities believe he was killed early in the war. Pinta's remains were reportedly retrieved in an operation against the Mujahideen Brigades, a small armed group which had taken responsibility for several hostages. The Israeli military also said it killed the group's leader, As'ad Aby Sharaiya, in a separate strike in Gaza City. According to Thailand's foreign ministry, two more Thai citizens are still unaccounted for. Thailand had one of the highest numbers of foreign nationals abducted in the Hamas assault, with many Thai workers employed on farms near Israel's southern border. At least 46 Thai nationals have died during the conflict, the ministry said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Israeli defence minister Yoav Gallant confirmed the retrieval. Fifty-five hostages are believed to remain in Gaza. Israel says more than half of them are no longer alive. Families of hostages gathered again in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening, urging the Israeli government to reach a ceasefire agreement and secure the release of those still held. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continued across Gaza, with reports of entire families being killed. One strike in Gaza City killed six members of a family, including two children, according to doctors at Shifa and al-Ahli hospitals. Another strike in northern Gaza reportedly killed seven people, including a mother and five children. The war has left over 54,000 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza's health ministry. Israel says its actions are in response to the October 7 attacks, which killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and led to the abduction of 251 hostages. Only eight have been rescued alive so far.

'So you need to win the Champions League?' - Franck Ribery takes aim at Cristiano Ronaldo, alludes to 2013 Ballon d'Or result

Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery were in the top 3 of the 2013 Ballon d'Or votes (Images via X/@Cristiano & eurosport) Legendary French forward and former Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery took shots at Portuguese skipper Cristiano Ronaldo as the latter made a comment on who he thinks should win the 2025 Ballon d'Or. In a press conference ahead of the UEFA Nations League final, Ronaldo expressed his opinion that the individual honour should be handed to a player whose team participated in the UEFA Champions League final. Ronaldo's comments were in response to a question that sought to elicit the veteran's take on who should win the Ballon d'Or between FC Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele. Another frontrunner for the award is Barcelona forward Raphinha, who also leads the tally in goal contributions across Europe's top five leagues. However, Ronaldo's comment was enough to provoke Ribery into a heated reaction, as the Frenchman took to Instagram. "So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?", wrote the 42-year-old on his Instagram story. Franck Ribery's Instagram story following Ronaldo's comments (Image via Instagram/@franckribery7) His reaction alludes to the fact that he missed out on the same award despite being part of a Bayern Munich squad that won the treble. In the title-winning campaign, Ribery led the charge alongside Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic. Despite a brilliant season, Ribery saw Ronaldo lift the Ballon d'Or after voting for the same was extended. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Poll Should winning the UEFA Champions League be a requirement for winning the Ballon d'Or? After suggesting that Lamine Yamal should not win the Ballon d'Or, Ronaldo will take him on in the final of the UEFA Nations League as Spain face Portugal at the Allianz Arena in Germany.
