Sabah polls: Warisan to go solo, even if any party leaves GRS
The Warisan president said he had met Sabah STAR president Daruk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan in September 2024 on his party's intention to leave GRS.
"Jeffrey told me he wanted to leave GRS – that was in September 2024. Till today, the party is still there (in GRS)," Shafie told reporters at his residence here after a courtesy call by political counsellor from the US Embassy Chris Carver, on Monday (Aug 18).
Shafie said Sabah STAR was consistently talking about defending Sabah and its rights.
"They have the voice but are still inside (GRS). It's inconsistent with what they're saying on state rights," he said.
He said Warisan's focus was on Sabah and its people, not about making alliances just to hold on to power.
Shafie said he would ensure every candidate picked would serve the people if they won, not just to search for projects for personal gain.
He said Sabahans were a united people irrespective of the culture, religion or race but some sadly continue to play divisive roles just to stay in power, doing little for the people for decades.
"Families are divided because of politics," he said, adding that Jeffrey defeated his brother Tan Sri Joseph Parin Kitingan (Parti Bersatu Sabah) in Tambunan in the 2018 election.
"Some effort must be made to unite Sabahans by using just one party.
"We must not sell the future of children for any personal political agenda," he said, adding that the eight-party GRS under Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor had failed to meet the expectations of Sabahans.
Calling for a "wake-up call", he said that there was no need for Sabahans to depend on political warlords and families.
Asked if Warisan would still forge an alliance in the event of a hung assembly, he said Warisan was providing the platform for the people to decide their future.
"We have been in the Opposition for six years and it is important for Sabahans to decide their future. I cannot assume we will not have the numbers.
"We leave the choice to the people, we are not driven by greed" he said.

(Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA: Convicted former Sabah minister Peter Anthony today failed in his bid to secure a retrial of his forgery charge after the Court of Appeal dismissed his application for a review, filed on March 14. Justice Azman Abdullah, chairing a three-judge panel, said there was no failure of justice regarding a police report lodged by prosecution witness Shukur Din, which was argued extensively in the final appeal last year. 'The previous appeal bench's failure to include (Shukur's police report as fresh evidence) in its broad grounds does not amount to a failure of justice,' he said. Also on the panel hearing the review application were Justices Noorin Badarudin and Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz. On March 4, a Court of Appeal panel comprising Justices Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Zaini Mazlan and Azmi Ariffin delivered its broad oral grounds of judgment on Peter's appeal. The full judgment, written by Zaini and made available to parties early this week, explained why the fresh evidence did not help to exonerate Peter. Shukur had alleged that a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission investigating officer concocted the last paragraph of his police report to implicate Peter in using Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to mislead then prime minister Najib Razak into securing a contract. Peter contended that Shukur's police report on Aug 9, 2018 exonerated him. He said the non-disclosure of the evidence at trial had prejudiced him. The former state minister in the Warisan-led Sabah government between 2018 and 2020 contended that he was deprived of the right to a fair trial by not being able to cross-examine Shukur on the report. The Court of Appeal last year granted Peter's application to admit Shukur's police report as additional evidence, noting that he had only come across it through a friend. The former Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat president's review application had sought to set aside the Court of Appeal's final ruling convicting him of the offence, and for the ordering of a retrial. Earlier today, lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla, appearing for Peter, told the court that the 16-page broad grounds made no reference to the fresh evidence admitted. Joining Kinabalu Move would have betrayed people's mandate, says Shahelmey
Tanjung Keramat assemblyman Shahelmey Yahya was suspended from Umno for six years for defying the party's directive to back the 2023 Kinabalu Move. KUALA LUMPUR : Tanjung Keramat assemblyman Shahelmey Yahya says he refused to take part in the Kinabalu Move which failed to unseat Hajiji Noor as Sabah chief minister two years ago as he did not want to betray the people's mandate. Shahelmey, who was suspended from Umno for six years for defying the party's directive at the time, said the people's rejection of Warisan in the 2020 state election should have been respected. He said that the Umno faction backing state chapter chief Bung Moktar Radin had sought to form an alliance with Warisan, led by Shafie Apdal, to topple the state government – a move which he said clearly went against the will of the people. 'Suddenly there was an attempt to overthrow a government that had been formed through the people's mandate, and to return power to Warisan in an undemocratic manner. 'To me, that would have been a betrayal of the trust that the people placed in me,' he told FMT in an interview outside Parliament. Shahelmey also alleged that Bung had not consulted all of the Umno assemblymen before launching the Kinabalu Move. 'I was never consulted about the plan, but my principle was clear: I would not betray the people's mandate by helping to change the government,' he said. Shahelmey was among six Umno assemblymen who chose to back Hajiji's administration. The Kinabalu Move ultimately failed as Hajiji, who was appointed as chief minister in September 2020, also continued to command the backing of assemblymen from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Pakatan Harapan. Bung was removed as deputy chief minister, and Shahelmey appointed in his place. Shahelmey said the failure of the Kinabalu Move turned out to be a blessing as Hajiji's unity government grew stronger, creating political stability. 'With this stability, we can continue implementing the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan,' the Sabah works minister added. Last week, Kunak assemblywoman Norazlinah Arif described the Kinabalu Move as the ultimate betrayal of the people of Sabah, claiming that Shafie was also involved. Shafie however denied the allegation by the former Warisan women's chief, saying the move arose from a conflict between Hajiji and Bung and had nothing to do with him.

Shahelmey weighs GRS ticket after BN door ‘closes'
Last Sunday, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor hinted that Shahelmey Yahya might contest under the GRS banner to defend his Tanjung Keramat state seat in the next Sabah polls. KUALA LUMPUR : Sabah deputy chief minister Shahelmey Yahya is weighing the possibility of contesting under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, with his chances of standing again as a Barisan Nasional candidate possibly over. Shahelmey, who currently holds the Tanjung Keramat seat, said his decision would ultimately hinge on feedback from voters in the constituency. 'I need to listen to the people in the area because they are the ones who will be voting. There is also the local machinery whose views I must consider. 'If the feedback is convincing, then we will make a decision,' he told FMT when met at the Parliament building. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor had earlier expressed confidence that Shahelmey could defend the seat under the coalition's banner. Shahelmey first won Tanjung Keramat on a BN ticket in 2020. However, his ties with BN have soured since March 2023, when Umno suspended him for six years for refusing to support the party's move to topple Hajiji. The rift widened last year after Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin named Sabah Umno election director Jeffrey Noh as the coalition's candidate for Tanjung Keramat, effectively sidelining Shahelmey. '(It's as if) the door has closed,' Shahelmey said of his BN prospects. He said there had been no discussions with Sabah BN or coalition chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding his candidacy. Shahelmey said his decision on whether to contest on a GRS ticket was further complicated by his position as Umno's Putatan MP. Under the anti-hopping law, he risks losing his parliamentary seat if he contests under a party other than BN as he won Putatan on a BN ticket in the 15th general election. 'That matter is quite technical. I will make a decision later,' he said, without elaborating.
