4m riyals saved under Hajj costs
The meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs, chaired by Senator Attaur Rehman, was held to discuss Hajj arrangements and related issues. The Additional Secretary stated that a 12-member procurement committee had been formed for Hajj arrangements.
The committee chairman suggested including a parliamentarian in the procurement committee, highlighting that pilgrims face numerous issues every year.
Committee members raised concerns over the selection process of Hajj assistants through the National Testing Service (NTS), pointing out that the NTS exam paper was leaked in the previous selection process. Senator Kamran Murtaza emphasized that the leaked paper was even circulated in a video, which he claimed to have as evidence.
In response, the Additional Secretary acknowledged isolated incidents of cheating but defended the overall process as transparent and merit-based. He noted that, in the past, Hajj assistants were appointed based on personal connections and recommendations, whereas now they must pass an exam.
NTS officials stated that, out of 50,000 candidates, only two or three were caught with mobile phones during the test. However, Senator Bushra Butt criticized the NTS for failing to prevent cheating and mobile phone usage during the exam. The committee chairman called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
The Additional Secretary also stated that if there are any allegations of financial corruption involving NTS or the Ministry of Religious Affairs, they should be formally brought forward.
Regarding the Auqaf Department, he informed the committee that the Supreme Court had ordered the transfer of Auqaf land. According to the law, anyone occupying the land until 2010 is considered a tenant. He added that the income generated from Auqaf properties is used for the maintenance of gurdwaras and temples.
Senator Ali Zafar noted that the Ministry of Law had yet to respond to the Muslim Family Law Amendment Bill. He mentioned that scholars from around the world are willing to provide a briefing on the bill via Zoom.
Senator Kamran Murtaza cautioned against complicating marriage and divorce laws, emphasizing that marriage is a social contract.
Senator Dr. Afnan Ullah Khan warned that if the law is amended to include property division in divorce cases, people might avoid marriage, as has been observed in Europe.

Second phase of Hajj 2026 applications to begin on August 11
Ministry of Religious Affairs has completed the first phase of receiving applications under the 2026 government Hajj scheme, with more than 71,000 submissions, officials said on Saturday. The ministry said the first phase was open only to applicants who had already registered for the pilgrimage. Each applicant submitted the first instalment of Rs500,000 along with their application. The second phase will begin on August 11 and run until August 16, during which both registered and unregistered pilgrims will be able to apply. Applications in this phase will be accepted on a 'first come, first served' basis. Officials said more than 116,000 Pakistanis will perform Hajj next year under the government quota. Those who submit applications with the first instalment before the quota is filled will secure a spot, while the process will be halted once the limit is reached. Overseas Pakistanis can also apply through a close relative at designated banks, the ministry's spokesperson said. Medical fitness certificates for applicants abroad can be submitted upon arrival in Pakistan. The ministry said it will announce the suspension of applications as soon as the quota is met. It is pertinent to mention here that Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Sardar Muhammad Yousaf said last week that Pakistan has been allocated a quota of 179,210 pilgrims — 119,210 under the government scheme and 60,000 for private operators — subject to final confirmation by Saudi authorities. The government scheme will include both the traditional 38-42 day package and a shorter 20-25 day option. Estimated costs are expected to range between Rs1.15 million and Rs1.25 million, depending on final agreements with service providers. Read More: Hajj 2026 deadline extended Pilgrims will be required to deposit Hajj dues in two installments, with the first installment — Rs500,000 for the long package and Rs550,000 for the short one through designated banks, he added. Minister Yousaf said applicants must hold valid Pakistani passports until at least November 26, 2026, and children under 12 years of age will not be eligible for Hajj this year. He said all pilgrims must be vaccinated with Saudi-approved vaccines. He said the 'Road to Makkah' initiative will continue at Islamabad and Karachi airports. He said overseas Pakistanis will be allowed to remit Hajj payments to nominated bank accounts under the scheme. The policy mandates compulsory animal sacrifice payments through the official Saudi system, he added.

Pakistan condemns Israel's Gaza plan
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chairs a review meeting on Hajj arrangements for the upcoming year in Islamabad on Saturday, June 21, 2025. Photo courtesy: Radio Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday strongly condemned the Israeli cabinet's recent approval of a plan to assume control of Gaza City, calling it illegal and illegitimate and warning that the move represents a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict in Palestine. In a statement posted on his official X account, PM Sharif said the latest development would only deepen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and derail all prospects for peace in the region. "We strongly condemn the Israeli cabinet's approval of a plan to take illegal and illegitimate control of Gaza City. This tantamounts to a dangerous escalation in an already catastrophic war against the people of Palestine," the prime minister said. He emphasized that the root cause of the ongoing tragedy is Israel's "prolonged, illegal occupation of Palestinian territory," which he said continues to block any meaningful path to lasting peace. "As long as this occupation endures, peace will remain elusive," PM Sharif warned. The prime minister reiterated Pakistan's unwavering support for the Palestinian people, reaffirming their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, in accordance with United Nations and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) resolutions. Calling on the international community, PM Sharif urged urgent intervention to stop what he described as Israel's "unwarranted aggression," to protect innocent civilians, and to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Meanwhile, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan condemned in the strongest terms the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by thousands of Israeli settlers, including senior officials and Knesset members. "These provocations, accompanied by offensive declarations, are deliberate attempts to inflame religious sentiments and destabilize the region," he warned.
