Joe Shiesty Speeds Gate To Wire In Mighty Beau originally appeared on Paulick Report.
In his 4-year-old debut, Joe Shiesty shot to the front out of the gate and had enough left to withstand a late surge from favored Arrest Me Red to win Saturday's ninth running of the $224,670 Mighty Beau Stakes (L) by a neck at Churchill Downs.

Joe Shiesty, trained by Eric Foster, ran five furlongs on firm turf in a stakes record :55.87 under Luan Machado to collect his second career stakes win for owners Brooklyn Foster's Foster Family Racing, Lonnie Reynolds, Vicki Mills and Donald Coomes. He eclipsed Forgive's 2017 mark of :56.31.
'He broke so well and took me right to the lead,' Machado said. 'I remember the first time I rode him Eric told me he's the 'fastest horse in North America.' He was right. We went 20 seconds for a quarter-mile at Keeneland. He showed that speed today early without me even asking him. He's a very talented horse and can run well on any surface.'
Joe Shiesty, who zipped early fractions of :21.56 and :43.98 while breaking from post No. 5, earned $135,245 for the win and improved his career record to 5-2-1 in 13 starts with earnings of $553,056.
Sent to post as the 3-1 second betting choice in the field of eight older horses, Joe Shiesty paid $8.54, $4.34 and $3.38. Arrest Me Red, the 2-1 favorite who closed for second under Luan Machado, returned $3.80 and $2.86. Run Carson, at odds of 7-2, was another 2 ¼ lengths back in third under Adam Beschizza and paid $3.26 to show.

Epic Ride, Champlin, Charcoal, Balsa and All Jokes Aside completed the order of finish. Doncho and Lunar Module were scratched.
At age 3, Joe Shiesty won the $300,000 William Walker at Churchill Downs. Saturday was Joe Shiesty's first race in 195 days since finishing second in an allowance at Churchill Downs during the Fall Meet.
'We just wanted to do whatever was right for Joe Shiesty,' Foster said. 'We took our time after he had surgery at the end of the Fall Meet here at Churchill. When he breaks well, he's going to make it hard on everyone else. It's a joy to have some good horses to go along in your barn. It's nice to have some horses you can count on like Joe Shiesty. I knew if he broke good today he was going to be extremely tough. The five-eighths distance fit him perfectly coming off a break. Regardless of how far they were going, he was going to break well and go hard out front. I think he was just getting a little tired at the end and we'll look for him to be even stronger next time.'
A gelded son of Air Force Blue out of the More Than Ready mare Ready to Unleash, Joe Shiesty was bred in Kentucky by Rodney E. Orr.

The Mighty Beau is named in honor of graded stakes winner Mighty Beau, who boasted a record of 75-12-19-10—$646,000 from 2001-08. The Oklahoma-bred gelded son of Rainbow Prospect made a record five starts in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint (then known as the Aegon Turf Sprint) from 2002-06, winning the race in 2005 at age 6 for owners Mike Cloonan and Anthony Carolan, trainer Jeff Mullins and jockey Pat Valenzuela.

Mariners Announce Julio Rodriguez News After Angels Game

Mariners Announce Julio Rodriguez News After Angels Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night. This was the second game of a three-game AL West series. With the loss, Seattle ends the night 3.5 games back of the first-place Houston Astros, and just two games up on the third-place Angels. Advertisement In addition to the MVP-caliber numbers switch-hitting catcher Cal Raleigh has been putting up this season, Seattle has been reliant on the production of All-Star center fielder Julio Rodriguez. The 24-year-old is second on the team in RBIs and runs scored, and has played good defense in center, including a home run robbing catch in the series opener against LA. Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez (44)© Jason Parkhurst-Imagn Images In an unfortunate development on Saturday, Rodriguez was removed from the game after recording hits in each of his first two at-bats. While running from second to third, Rodriguez was struck by a 98.1 MPH ground ball off the bat of Randy Arozarena. Advertisement Not only was this an automatic out, but it forced Rodriguez to exit the game. There was obvious concern among Seattle fans, and the Mariners have since announced an official update via manager Dan Wilson. "Julio Rodríguez had X-rays taken tonight here at Angel Stadium, which came back negative … He is day to day and Dan Wilson is optimistic that he'll avoid the IL, but they won't know more until tomorrow," Daniel Kramer of wrote on X. This encouraging update from the team got even better when Rodriguez told reporters there is a "high chance" he plays in the series finale against Los Angeles (via Kramer). Advertisement Rodriguez owns a .742 OPS this season, which is below his career .793 mark. The 2022 AL Rookie of the Year, Rodriguez burst onto the scene with 28 home runs and 75 RBIs in his first MLB season. He followed that with 32 homers and 103 RBIs the next season, but took a step back in 2024. While his numbers do not mirror what he did in his first two MLB seasons, Rodriguez remains an integral part of this Seattle team that has postseason hopes. Gonsolin joins Glasnow, Sasaki and Snell among 14 Dodgers pitchers on injured list

Tony Gonsolin was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday by the Dodgers because of right elbow discomfort, joining fellow rotation members Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki and Blake Snell among 14 Los Angeles pitchers on the IL. NL West-leading Los Angeles activated relievers Kirby Yates from the 15-day IL and Michael Kopech from the 60-day IL before Saturday's game against St. Louis and designated right-hander Chris Stratton for assignment, one day after he rejoined the team. Gonsolin, a 31-year-old right-hander, made his season debut on April 30 after recovering from Tommy John surgery on Aug. 18, 2023, and was 3-2 with a 5.00 ERA in seven starts. He last pitched Wednesday in a 6-1 loss to the New York Mets, allowing three runs — two earned — three hits and three walks in five innings. Other Dodgers pitchers on the IL are right-handers Luis García, Brudar Graterol, Michael Grove, Edgardo Henriquez, Kyle Hurt, Evan Phillips, River Ryan, Emmet Sheehan, Gavin Stone and Blake Treinen. Kopech, a 29-year-old right-hander, had been sidelined since spring training with right shoulder impingement and had a 15.63 ERA in nine rehab appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City from May 8 through last Sunday. Yates, a 38-year-old right-hander, had been sidelined since May 17 because of a strained right hamstring. He is 3-2 with a 4.34 ERA in 22 relief appearances, striking out 31 and walking six in 18 2/3 innings. Stratton, 34, signed with the Dodgers on May 25, three days after he was released by Kansas City. He was designated for assignment on June 2, refused an outright assignment to Oklahoma City, then re-signed with the Dodgers a day later. He has made a pair of appearances for Los Angeles, totaling three innings.
