A Momo-rable moment against Man Utd
KUALA LUMPUR: The unheralded name of Maung Maung Lwin rings loud now in Asian football.
The man from Myanmar embarrassed Manchester United with his winner for the Asean All Stars in the Maybank Challenge Cup at Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.
Maung Lwin, known to teammates as "Momo", beat his Man Utd marker before firing a low shot in the 71st minute that hit the Red Devils' net.
"Maybe this isn't a dream," said Maung Lwin, his eyes wide and voice trembling.
"This is something rare, not just for our team, but for all of Asia. That's why I'm just so happy," added the 28-year-old winger from Yangon.
"It's the biggest goal of his career," said South Korean Kim Sang Sik, the Asean All Stars coach.
"But more than that, it symbolised what's possible. We celebrate what Asian football can be."
Apart from Maung Lwin's heroics, the hastily cobbled Asean All Stars side showed Man United what unity is all about.
Sang Sik said though the team were formed in only two days, they played like they have known each other for 20 years.
"We trained for two days. But they listened, they understood, they fought. It's unbelievable," he added.
"United are a global team. However, this match shows that Asian players like Momo can play for foreign clubs. We need to stop thinking we're second best."
When the final whistle blew, the Korean made his way to the centre circle, where his Asean players stood, arm-in-arm, sweat and disbelief clinging to their shirts.
"This is one match. Just one. But it's a reminder. A reminder that Asia belongs in the global conversation," said Sang Sik.

Beckham Calls Out Man United Players' Malaysia Conduct
ENGLAND football legend David Beckham has criticised the uncivilised actions of several Manchester United players during their visit to Malaysia last week. Beckham, speaking to CBS Sports in an interview recently, indirectly referred to two players from the legendary club, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho, who were captured showing disrespect towards fans during their Asian tour. 'I felt there were many things that were unacceptable as a Manchester United supporter. 'This is because most of them (players) behaved inappropriately towards the fans,' he said in the clip. It is understood that due to frustration over their defeat against the ASEAN All-Stars last Monday, both players from the popular club were recorded showing rude behaviour through obscene gestures towards their fans. Garnacho was seen making an obscene middle finger gesture at the time, whilst Diallo also made similar gestures and showed no remorse whatsoever for the shameful act. Meanwhile, Beckham also expressed disappointment over the matter. 'What happened does not reflect the values and dignity of this club,' he added. He said that as United players, responsibility towards the badge on their chest must be upheld, and he considered the club's players to have failed to conduct themselves properly. 'We always respected fans wherever we went, but it seems current players no longer understand what it means to play for Manchester United. 'What happens on the pitch is important, but attitude and conduct also reflect who we are as Manchester United players,' he said. Earlier, the iconic club recently ended a disappointing Premier League season with a brief Asian tour, including matches against the ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong's national team. Ruben Amorim's team lost 1-0 in Malaysia. Eain Yow exits British Open, Sivasangari last Malaysian standing
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 12 Ng Eain Yow suffered a shock second-round exit at the British Open in Birmingham on Sunday. The Asian champion, who received a first-round bye, went down 13-11, 11-5, 11-7 to world No. 14 Victor Crouin of France in 58 minutes. It was Eain Yow's first loss to the Frenchman in four meetings and a disappointing step back after reaching the quarter-finals last year. Malaysia's campaign in the women's category also took a hit, with Rachel Arnold, Aifa Azman and Ainaa Amani all bowing out in the first round. S. Sivasangari is now the sole Malaysian left in the tournament. She begins her campaign in the second round later today. Despite the early exit, national coach Ajaz Azmat saw positives in Eain Yow's performance. "Eain Yow fought really hard, but it just wasn't his day," said Ajaz. "The first game was very close, and he had chances to take it. But Crouin was just too good, especially in the crucial stages." Eain Yow will now shift focus to defending his title at the Asian Championships in Kuching, Sarawak, on June 17-21.
