Smith, Smythe-Lowe and April shone for Amajita in Egypt at U20 Afcon

The South African U-20 men's team achieved the improbable as they won the country's first ever African Youth Championship title in Egypt on Sunday night.
En route to the crown, Amajita beat Morocco 1-0 in the final at 30 June Stadium in Cairo courtesy of Gomolemo Kekana' scorcher.
Coach Raymond Mdaka opened up during his post-match press conference that it was a team effort that enabled them to surpass the class of 1997 which only finished as runners-up.
But there were individuals that ensured Amajita climbed to the top of the continental rankings, and that's why we look at three of them below.

Tylon Smith โ Defender
Smith duly walked away with the Player of the Tournament award, thanks to a host of Player of the Match performances throughout the tournament.
Smith didn't only marshall Amajita's defence against the run of play or out of possession, but he was creative in build-up play, linking defence with midfielders.
The towering defender put his height into good use during setpieces, chipping in with crucial goals, including the lone header during the win over Nigeria in the semi-final.

Fletcher Smythe-Lowe โ Goalkeeper
After making crucial saves and assisting Kekana's goal in the final, there were also a range of expectations for Smythe-Lowe to scoop the Player of the Tournament award.
But it wasn't to be as he lost out to teammate Smith. Nevertheless, he showed his goalkeeping prowess, and is tipped to follow in the footsteps of some of the country's greats.
Smythe-Lowe, en route to four clean sheets in the tournament, pulled off some incredible saves and was able to organise his defence against set-pieces.
Shakeel April โ Winger
Having arrived in Egypt with some few minutes under his belt for the Cape Town City first team, that showed in April's game against his peers.
The winger wasn't only a thorn in the flesh for the opposition's defence, but his decision-making was spot on, especially when he was in possession.
Sure, he didn't score as many goals as he'd have liked to, but his attacking prowess opened up space for the rest of his teammates up front.

New club, same drama: MaMkhize taken to court over Mbabane Highlanders ownership
New drama Former Mbabane Highlanders FC boss Bheki Simelane has challenged Durban businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize's ownership of the club. Photo: BackpagePix The ownership of Eswatini's Mbabane Highlanders AM FC has been thrown into dispute, with new owner Shauwn Mkhize facing a High Court challenge from former club boss Bheki Simelane. Simelane has initiated legal action in the High Court of Eswatini, claiming he was unlawfully removed from his position and remains the club's rightful owner, contradicting a claim from South African businessman Alfred Kgomongwe that ownership had been transferred to Mkhize. On Tuesday, former Mbabane Highlanders Managing Director Mandla Shongwe confirmed the matter was now before the court. 'The club was unlawfully taken away from us. The club still belongs to us,' Shongwe said, as per KickOff.

Record-breaking Brevis cuts Australia to smithereens
Dewald Brevis's solution for the problem created by all the expectations of him as a junior, was to be himself more often (and not the guy he's still compared with) and perhaps more importantly, have fun. On Tuesday that policy continued to bear fruit with the 22-year-old registering the highest score by a Proteas batter in a T20 International, with a remarkable unbeaten 125 against Australia in Darwin. It surpassed Faf du Plessis's 119, scored against the West Indies 10 years ago. Brevis's innings helped South Africa reach 218/7, setting up a 53-run victory in the second game of the three-match series and helping restore confidence for the side after a scratchy start on Sunday. The bowlers were able to deliver smart changes of pace despite the difficulty holding the ball because of heavy dew at the Marrara Stadium, bowling Australia out for the second consecutive time and snapping a six-match losing run against them dating back to February 2020. The second-quickest T20I hundred from a South African player! Dewald Brevis, take a bow ๐ #AUSvSA โ (@cricketcomau) August 12, 2025 'It was about watching the ball and then just having fun,' Brevis said in a television interview at the halfway stage of the innings. 'It's what I've wanted to do โ just play with a smile on my face.' Brevis also delivered an answer to a crucial question for Shukri Conrad ahead of next year's T20 World Cup โ who can replace Heinrich Klaasen in the middle order? Like Klaasen, Brevis is devastating against spinners โ six of his eight sixes came off Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa, who is ranked as the fifth best T20 International bowler. The other standout feature of his innings was how well he struck the ball down the ground, mesmerising the crowd with several devastating โ and what have become for Brevis โ characteristic head down 'golf swings' over long-on. Even when Zampa tried a wide delivery outside off stump in the 17th over, Brevis, with a flick of his wrists still deposited the ball between the long-off and long-on fielders. It wasn't always pretty. Brevis had some good fortune early in his innings, mistiming several shots, and even against Josh Hazlewood later on, a few top edges flew over the keeper's head. But that luck was the result of the intent with which he played, something that was absent from South Africa's batting in the first match. WELCOME BABY AB DE VILLIERS - DEWALD BREVIS๐ฅ โ Rayham (@RayhamUnplugged) August 12, 2025 Put into bat by Australian captain Mitchell Marsh, the Proteas were aggressive from the start, with Aiden Markram stroking the first delivery through the covers, and while it was Kagiso Rabada who hit the first six in the 17th over on Sunday, Ryan Rickelton nailed the first of 11 sixes in the third over on Tuesday. Brevis still had to be relatively patient when he arrived at the crease after Markram had slapped Maxwell to mid-off for 18. That was one of three soft dismissals for the Proteas top order, and meant Brevis and Tristan Stubbs had to start their partnership carefully. But with Brevis growing in confidence, and Stubbs willing to give him the strike, South Africa gained a firm foothold. Brevis was dropped on 56 by substitute field Matthew Kuhnemann, and took advantage of that opportunity to produce at international level what he'd shown in the last domestic season for his province (Northerns) across all formats and in the SA20 for MI Cape Town. He and Stubbs added 126 runs off 57 balls for the fourth wicket with South Africa surging in the second half of their innings, scoring 130 runs in the last 10 overs. 'Stubbs played his role so well,' said Brevis of his batting partner who made 31 off 22 balls. 'Next time he'll moer (whack) every ball as well.' Brevis became the eighth South African batter to score a T20 International 100, with his 56-ball innings that included 12 fours and eight sixes, the 10th T20 International century by a Proteas batter. Australia's response was typically aggressive, and they were comfortably ahead of South Africa's run rate comparatively, thanks to another Tim David assault. The lanky right-hander smashed four fours and four sixes in a 24-ball 50, but as in the first game, there wasn't much else from the rest of the batting order. Corbin Bosch had an excellent evening, taking 3/20 and, though expensive, Kwena Maphaka added to his four wickets in the first match, with three more on Wednesday conceding 57 runs, but counting Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green among his dismissals. The Proteas' ground fielding and catching was also much improved from the first match, with Nqaba Peter and Brevis holding onto some excellent catches. The deciding match in the series will be played in Cairns on Saturday.

Bafana Bafana claim first CHAN win, eyes now on Niger
Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki happy with his side's win against Guinea, but wants to see more improvements for the rest of the tournament. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Bafana Bafana claimed their first victory at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), edging Guinea 2โ1 to stay in contention for a place in the knockout stages. The win moved South Africa up to third in Group C, keeping their unbeaten run intact after their 1โ1 draw against Algeria in the tournament opener on Friday. They now trail group leaders and co-hosts Uganda by two points, although the Ugandans have played one game more. Algeria also sit on four points but are ahead of Bafana on goal difference. Goals from Neo Maema and Thabiso Kutumela proved decisive, helping South Africa hold off a spirited Guinea side. Despite Moussa Camara's 37th-minute equaliser, Bafana managed to weather the storm as fatigue began to set in among their largely unattached squad members. Molefi Ntseki's men now turn their focus to Friday's clash against Niger at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium (kickoff 7pm). The West African side are bottom of the group, having lost both of their opening matches and are yet to register a point. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close โ Ad loading Reflecting on the result, Ntseki praised his side's resilience, acknowledging that while they were under pressure at times, the key was getting the job done. 'You can tell how difficult it was, and how tough it was. But at the end of the day, Guinea played the game, and we scored the goals,' Ntseki said after the match. 'And what is important for us was to score the goals and win the game. We are very pleased with the result, but there is still a lot of work that we need to do going into the next match. 'As for Guinea, I think they came at us after we scored the first goal, which was a beautiful goal and worked out in line with our preparations. 'I also think the recovery period was a bit short for us especially when you look into the intensity of the last game we played.' The former Kaizer Chiefs coach highlighted a few areas the team needs to work on ahead of their next encounter. The issue of the squad's overall fitness continues to loom large, with only two days between their match against Niger on Friday and their final group fixture against tournament Uganda on Monday.
