Smith, Smythe-Lowe and April shone for Amajita in Egypt at U20 Afcon

The South African U-20 men's team achieved the improbable as they won the country's first ever African Youth Championship title in Egypt on Sunday night.
En route to the crown, Amajita beat Morocco 1-0 in the final at 30 June Stadium in Cairo courtesy of Gomolemo Kekana' scorcher.
Coach Raymond Mdaka opened up during his post-match press conference that it was a team effort that enabled them to surpass the class of 1997 which only finished as runners-up.
But there were individuals that ensured Amajita climbed to the top of the continental rankings, and that's why we look at three of them below.

Smith duly walked away with the Player of the Tournament award, thanks to a host of Player of the Match performances throughout the tournament.
Smith didn't only marshall Amajita's defence against the run of play or out of possession, but he was creative in build-up play, linking defence with midfielders.
The towering defender put his height into good use during setpieces, chipping in with crucial goals, including the lone header during the win over Nigeria in the semi-final.

Fletcher Smythe-Lowe โ Goalkeeper
After making crucial saves and assisting Kekana's goal in the final, there were also a range of expectations for Smythe-Lowe to scoop the Player of the Tournament award.
But it wasn't to be as he lost out to teammate Smith. Nevertheless, he showed his goalkeeping prowess, and is tipped to follow in the footsteps of some of the country's greats.
Smythe-Lowe, en route to four clean sheets in the tournament, pulled off some incredible saves and was able to organise his defence against set-pieces.

Having arrived in Egypt with some few minutes under his belt for the Cape Town City first team, that showed in April's game against his peers.
The winger wasn't only a thorn in the flesh for the opposition's defence, but his decision-making was spot on, especially when he was in possession.
Sure, he didn't score as many goals as he'd have liked to, but his attacking prowess opened up space for the rest of his teammates up front.

Record-breaking Brevis cuts Australia to smithereens
Dewald Brevis's solution for the problem created by all the expectations of him as a junior, was to be himself more often (and not the guy he's still compared with) and perhaps more importantly, have fun. On Tuesday that policy continued to bear fruit with the 22-year-old registering the highest score by a Proteas batter in a T20 International, with a remarkable unbeaten 125 against Australia in Darwin. It surpassed Faf du Plessis's 119, scored against the West Indies 10 years ago. Brevis's innings helped South Africa reach 218/7, setting up a 53-run victory in the second game of the three-match series and helping restore confidence for the side after a scratchy start on Sunday. The bowlers were able to deliver smart changes of pace despite the difficulty holding the ball because of heavy dew at the Marrara Stadium, bowling Australia out for the second consecutive time and snapping a six-match losing run against them dating back to February 2020. The win moved South Africa up to third in Group C, keeping their unbeaten run intact after their 1โ1 draw against Algeria in the tournament opener on Friday. They now trail group leaders and co-hosts Uganda by two points, although the Ugandans have played one game more. Algeria also sit on four points but are ahead of Bafana on goal difference. Goals from Neo Maema and Thabiso Kutumela proved decisive, helping South Africa hold off a spirited Guinea side. Despite Moussa Camara's 37th-minute equaliser, Bafana managed to weather the storm as fatigue began to set in among their largely unattached squad members. Molefi Ntseki's men now turn their focus to Friday's clash against Niger at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium (kickoff 7pm). 'You can tell how difficult it was, and how tough it was. But at the end of the day, Guinea played the game, and we scored the goals,' Ntseki said after the match. 'And what is important for us was to score the goals and win the game. We are very pleased with the result, but there is still a lot of work that we need to do going into the next match. 'As for Guinea, I think they came at us after we scored the first goal, which was a beautiful goal and worked out in line with our preparations. 'I also think the recovery period was a bit short for us especially when you look into the intensity of the last game we played.' The former Kaizer Chiefs coach highlighted a few areas the team needs to work on ahead of their next encounter.
