Run special trains for Velankanni fest: Church to Rlys
Southern Railway
to operate special trains for the annual festival of St Mary's Nativity that takes place from Aug 29 to Sept 8.
Talking to TOI, rector C Irudayaraj on Saturday said, "Around ten lakhs of people are expected to visit the festival this year as in the previous years.
Hence, we urge Southern Railway to operate at least three special trains from other states for the convenience of devotees.
"
The church administration also stressed that more coaches should be attached to the trains passing through Velankanni during the festival days.
Earlier in the day, Irudayaraj met reporters and announced that the festival would begin on Aug 29 with flag hoisting and go on till Sept 8.

Silchar: In a major boost to Mizoram's connectivity, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is gearing up to flag off passenger train services on the Bairabi-Sairang route as early as next month — before the Durga puja festival. Heavy vehicles restricted on Ghodbunder Highway till Monday
Thane: Traffic movement on Ghodbunder Highway, linking Mumbai, Navi Mumbai with Gujarat, Northern Maharashtra, and Konkan, will again be affected during this long weekend with outbound heavy freight vehicles barred from using the highway starting at 12.01 am on Aug 15 to 5am on Aug 18. Traffic police have enforced restrictions to facilitate ongoing repair and upgradation of the Gaimukh to Fountain Hotel road stretch of the highway, officials informed. All freight vehicles coming from Thane, central Mumbai suburbs, and Navi Mumbai travelling towards the Gujarat Highway and western Mumbai suburbs will be diverted via Kapurbawdi-Kasheli or Majiwada-Kharegaon-Mankoli-Anjur Phata towards the Ahmedabad Highway. Those coming from the opposite direction will be diverted via Anjur Phata and Mankoli to Majiwada-Kapurbawdi. Trial run held on newly electrified Ramanathapuram–Rameswaram line
Rameswaram: The newly electrified Ramanathapuram–Rameswaram railway section saw its first trial run in the early hours of Thursday, marking a key step towards full electrification of the Madurai railway division. According to the Madurai railway division, the 52-km route (total track length 65 km) was energised at 12:35 am, followed by a short-circuit test. The AC electric locomotive departed Ramanathapuram at 1:02 am, reached Rameswaram at 1:56 am, and returned to Ramanathapuram by 4:13 am. The line has two switching stations at Uchipuli and Mandapam, and will be submitted for authorisation by the principal chief electrical engineer. Once cleared, the Madurai division will be nearly 100% electrified. To support further trials, 25 kV power will be maintained in the overhead equipment (OHE) until regular services begin. Railway authorities have urged the public to maintain at least two metres' distance from OHE lines, which carry 25,000 volts, and avoid unsafe acts such as climbing trains, throwing objects onto wires, or carrying tall metal objects beyond height limits at level crossings.
