Dowell earns hitting honor
For the second straight week, and third time overall, McNeese State has won a Player of the Week award in baseball.
Easton Dowell, the Southland Conference's leading hitter at .431, earned Hitter of the Week honors Monday, the league announced. That comes a week after center fielder Conner Westenburg picked up the same award.
Left-hander Alexis Grevel won the Pitcher of the Week honor earlier in the season.
Dowell had a big weekend as the Cowboys took two of three from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to move into a tie for first place with Southeastern, a half game ahead of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
The redshirt sophomore shortstop was 8-for-12 (.750) and hit his sixth home run during the three-game series at Joe Miller Ballpark. He also had three doubles and drove in four runs.
'Easton has been an outstanding player for us all season,' said Hill. 'We feel good when he is at the plate. He puts a good swing on the ball most of the time.'
Dowell was 3-for-3 in the series finale Saturday, a 3-1 victory.
The Cowboys will open a showdown series with UTRGV Friday night in Texas. However, before that, McNeese will host Louisiana Christian on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Parker Morgan (1-1) will make his seventh start for McNeese. The Wildcats (23-23) have lost six straight games.
'We have business to take care of first on Tuesday,' said McNeese head coach Justin Hill.
The Cowboys captured the series against the Islanders thanks to Sergio Lopez and Jake Blackwell. The two pitchers combined to hold down the Islanders just 24 hours after they had hit five home runs.
The duo allowed just one run and five hits as they split Saturday's outing.
The win gave the Cowboys (29-7, 16-5) their fifth straight Southland Conference series victory and sixth in seven weekends.
'You want to sweep, but you know you are not going to win them all,' said Hill. 'What you have to do is win the series.'
Lopez helped them do that. Making his first start of the season, and pitching for the first time in four weeks after an injury, Lopez didn't miss a beat.
Lopez pitched 4⅓ innings, allowing three hits while striking out five. He left on a pitch count and picked up the win to improve to 5-1.
'We were hoping to get two innings out of him, but he did more,' said Hill.
Blackwell went the final 4⅔ innings to earn his third save. Blackwell's only mistake was a home run hit by Jarrett Flaggert, who blasted his third of the year and second in as many days in the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1.
Conner Westenburg and Conner Schneider each added two hits for the Cowboys.

Cowboys legend Michael Irvin reveals details of cocaine arrest
Dallas Cowboys legendary wide receiver Michael Irvin opened up about an incident where he was arrested for cocaine possession in the prime years of the team's 1990s dynasty. During the seventh episode of the Netflix docuseries "America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys," Irvin spoke about the March 1996 incident that saw him arrested and eventually tried for cocaine possession. It came just one month after the team won its third Super Bowl in a four-year span, as Irvin had cemented himself as a league superstar and future Hall of Famer. "I had a routine, after you win the Super Bowl, before the next season starts, you get about a month, and that month you cut loose and have a good time," Irvin said of the incident that occurred just before his March 5 birthday. The documentary showed that, on March 4, 1996, police found Irvin, his former Cowboys teammate Alfredo Roberts and two females in a Texas hotel room with drug paraphernalia, sex toys, marijuana and cocaine. A hidden camera video showed Irvin discussing doing cocaine while in the passenger seat of car. Irvin faced potentially 20 years in prison. But he ultimately pleaded no contest to felony cocaine possession in exchange for four years of deferred probation, a $10,000 fine and dismissal of misdemeanor marijuana possession charges. He was also suspended the first five games of the 1996 season. Still, the incident resulted in a difficult conversation with his wife, Sandy Harrell. "My wife, she looked at me and she said, 'Don't say a word, God has already told me I am your wife and I am not going anywhere. But you have to make your peace with God,'" Irvin said in the documentary. "I don't think I ever felt worse in my life."

The Cardinals will have to face Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb in Week 9. He is No. 35 in the 'NFL Top 100'. The NFL continues to reveal players in the yearly offseason "NFL Top 100." Three Arizona Cardinals players made the list, with linebacker Josh Sweat at No. 95, tight end Trey McBride at No. 65 and safety Budda Baker at No. 34, making the list for the sixth straight year. Several players the Cardinals will face in 2025 continue to be revealed. Last week, in revealing players Nos. 31-40, No. 35 is someone the Cardinals will face in 2025. Player No. 35 is Dallas Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb. Lamb was No. 13 a year ago. Teammate Micah Parsons, a defensive end and No. 36 in the top 100, said that Lamb "is the best player I've ever seen in person." Recently retired safety Tyrann Mathieu said that Lamb "is one of the more physically gifted receivers in our league," noting his size and being able to "move like a little guy." Parsons pointed out, "He put up 1,200 yards while missing his quarterback," as Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott missed nine games. Lamb had 101 receptions and 1,194 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games. That sort of production without a great quarterback is something Cardinals fans will remember about Larry Fitzgerald. The Cardinals will face Lamb and the Cowboys in Week 9 on Monday night on the road. Lamb has not won a game in his career against the Cardinals, going 0-3. He has 14 receptions for 168 yards in those three games. It will be a big game on Monday night! Dallas Cowboys' Latest Star Attraction Overhyped?
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones loves to hype up his team. Which, when you're the owner of an NFL team, it's probably natural to gloat about the awesome investments you've made, especially when it's as cool as having a professional football team. Still, while the Jones family has made a lot of excellent decisions over the years, such as plucking Dak Prescott out of the fourth round in 2026, making Micah Parsons the 12th overall pick in 2021, they've also had a few investments that didn't pan out. Recently, the Cowboys decided to take a chance on trading for 2024 sixth-round pick Joe Milton from the New England Patriots. Milton showed big arm talent during last year's preseason, and he followed it up with an impressive win over Buffalo's second-string unit in Week 18 of last season too. The Cowboys only had to send a fifth-round pick to the Patriots in exchange for Milton plus a seventh-rounder. He's since made his preseason debut with the Cowboys, completing 17 of 29 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys' owner was already hyping Milton up before his debut, and that likely won't change now that he's seen him throw in live action. However, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer suggests Cowboys fans shouldn't believe the hype when it comes to Milton. 'I wouldn't take the cheese on Joe Milton. But he's definitely fun to watch.' SI's Albert Breer on Joe Milton Milton is certainly fun to watch. Not many quarterbacks have the type of arm strength that Milton does. Unfortunately, as the Patriots and now Cowboys have discovered, there are also too many times when Milton overthrows his targets. Still just 25 years old, Milton has plenty of time to work out the kinks. But for now, he should simply be viewed as a developmental prospect who still has a ways to go before being viewed as a potential long-term starter.
