For the second straight week, and third time overall, McNeese State has won a Player of the Week award in baseball.
Easton Dowell, the Southland Conference's leading hitter at .431, earned Hitter of the Week honors Monday, the league announced. That comes a week after center fielder Conner Westenburg picked up the same award.
Left-hander Alexis Grevel won the Pitcher of the Week honor earlier in the season.
Dowell had a big weekend as the Cowboys took two of three from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to move into a tie for first place with Southeastern, a half game ahead of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
The redshirt sophomore shortstop was 8-for-12 (.750) and hit his sixth home run during the three-game series at Joe Miller Ballpark. He also had three doubles and drove in four runs.
'Easton has been an outstanding player for us all season,' said Hill. 'We feel good when he is at the plate. He puts a good swing on the ball most of the time.'
Dowell was 3-for-3 in the series finale Saturday, a 3-1 victory.
The Cowboys will open a showdown series with UTRGV Friday night in Texas. However, before that, McNeese will host Louisiana Christian on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Parker Morgan (1-1) will make his seventh start for McNeese. The Wildcats (23-23) have lost six straight games.
'We have business to take care of first on Tuesday,' said McNeese head coach Justin Hill.
The Cowboys captured the series against the Islanders thanks to Sergio Lopez and Jake Blackwell. The two pitchers combined to hold down the Islanders just 24 hours after they had hit five home runs.
The duo allowed just one run and five hits as they split Saturday's outing.
The win gave the Cowboys (29-7, 16-5) their fifth straight Southland Conference series victory and sixth in seven weekends.
'You want to sweep, but you know you are not going to win them all,' said Hill. 'What you have to do is win the series.'
Lopez helped them do that. Making his first start of the season, and pitching for the first time in four weeks after an injury, Lopez didn't miss a beat.
Lopez pitched 4⅓ innings, allowing three hits while striking out five. He left on a pitch count and picked up the win to improve to 5-1.
'We were hoping to get two innings out of him, but he did more,' said Hill.
Blackwell went the final 4⅔ innings to earn his third save. Blackwell's only mistake was a home run hit by Jarrett Flaggert, who blasted his third of the year and second in as many days in the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1.
Conner Westenburg and Conner Schneider each added two hits for the Cowboys.

3 former Cowboys with troubled pasts arrested within 72 hours of each other

3 former Cowboys with troubled pasts arrested within 72 hours of each other The Dallas Cowboys have never been strangers with the red flag industry. Ever since their dominance of the 1990s, they've served as the poster franchise for taking risks on players with questionable pasts. Some times it works out, other times it doesn't, but since Jerry Jones has been owner of the club, they're well known to give second and third chances. Three of the most recent second-chance players all found themselves in booking photos over a 72-hour period. On Thursday, it was reported that Greg Hardy, signed in 2015 after a domestic violence arrest, had been arrested on Wednesday afternoon or alleging assaulting a family member. In the early hours of Saturday, Adam "Pacman" Jones was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Also in the early hours of Saturday, recent second-round pick Kelvin Joseph was arrested after being involved in a fatal car crash. While some have tried to paint the NFL in a bad light when it comes to arrests, the reality is they have a lower arrest rate (2.5 k per 100,000) than the general public (4k per 100,000) does. It's only that every arrest of an NFL player makes headlines. And while it may seem like the Cowboys have a greater share of NFL arrests than other clubs, that's more than likely because their reputation precedes them. Hardy, most famously, signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal with the Cowboys after his 2014 arrest led to his release from the Carolina Panthers. He did not get along well, consistently missing meetings and clashing with the coaching staff and fellow players. No team signed him after that and he eventually turned to being an MMA fighter to try and capitalize on his athletic nature. His career lasted from 2018 through 2022, when after losing three straight matches was released from the UFC. Jones signed with Dallas in 2008, after being suspended by the league for 2007 after two seasons in Tennessee. He played just nine games before being suspended, as he was involved in a fight with the bodyguard Dallas assigned to babysit the player. After sitting out 2009, he rejuvenated his career in Cincinnati, playing eight seasons for the Bengals, earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 2015 and a Pro Bowl the following year. Jones, 41, was booked just before 2 a.m. Saturday into Kenton County jail, according to the court log. He was arrested by the Covington Police Department and charged with alcohol intoxication in a public place, disorderly conduct, and assault of a police officer or a probation officer. Jones posted a $10,000 bond and was released around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Other details regarding the arrest were not immediately made available. Saturday's arrest in Covington, which is directly across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, marks at least the fourth time since 2021 that Jones has been arrested. He has now been booked on a public intoxication charge three years in a row. Joseph, part of the Cowboys' 2021 class that brought them Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizuwa, was traded away before 2023. he had been arrested for his participation in a fight outside a bar that led to a murder. He was drafted following being removed from the LSU team and having to transfer to Kentucky a year before entering the draft.

Cowboys' Pickens vs. Bland dilemma not about cap

Cowboys' Pickens vs. Bland dilemma not about cap originally appeared on Athlon Sports. We'll be a good sport and play the either-or game: George Pickens is the answer. Why? Because of the draft capital the Dallas Cowboys spent to acquire his services. If he walks after this season, then Dallas essentially wasted 75% of the 3rd round rookie contract they gave up — three years of cheap labor, gone. You don't make that trade unless you plan to keep the player. Advertisement So keep the player. But wait. Let's slow down. That's the answer ... but what is the question? It's an online debate about whether the Cowboys can afford to keep both Bland and Pickens as future stars paid within the parameters of the salary cap. And here's the truth: this whole 'Pickens or Bland' debate is built on a flawed premise. You don't have to choose. Not if you manage the cap like a team with a plan. Why? Because "Cap Hell'' is a myth. It's a talking point, not a truth. The salary cap is real tomorrow but fake today. It's not a hard team-building wall — it's an accounting strategy. It can be stretched, manipulated, forecasted with precision, and restructured. Advertisement As our Mike Fisher has been pointing out for years, "It's the same as your household budget. Cash, check, credit card ... generally, you can find ways to afford what you need.'' Yes, the Cowboys will have big numbers on the books come 2026: • Tyler Smith extension looming • Micah Parsons and Osa in Year 1 of their new deals • Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb in Year 2 of theirs That's the cost of retaining great players. But that's the bed Dallas made — and they'll have to lay in it. Just don't let them tell you one has to go, because at that point... they're reclining in a bed of lies. Solomon Thomas Could Be a Key Contributor for Dallas Cowboys

Solomon Thomas Could Be a Key Contributor for Dallas Cowboys originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys signed veteran defensive lineman Solomon Thomas this offseason to help mitigate the loss of underrated contributor Chauncey Golston. Although Golston wasn't a star edge rusher or game-wrecking defensive tackle, he was a versatile force who had the ability to play both inside and outside along the defensive line. Advertisement Thomas - given his Draft Day pedigree - has the potential to be an upgrade over Golston in Matt Eberflus' defensive scheme. Thomas is a former top-five overall pick and has earned over $41 million in his career. ... And he's ready to re-earn his keep now that he's back in DFW. The Coppell High School graduate is excited to play close to home and build upon the winning culture in the Cowboys organization. "It's been awesome, it's been really cool just being part of the team. Being home for me has been awesome," Thomas said. "Coach Schotty has been doing an amazing job just getting the energy right and culture right here." Advertisement "Guys are excited every day, there's enthusiasm every day, it's feeling like a family. I've only been here like a few weeks, but being around the team everyone feels close, it's a very college like atmosphere." Thomas stands 6-3, 295 pounds, and likely will primarily be deployed on the interior of the defensive line, as the Cowboys have a rock-solid group of young edge rushers—including Micah Parsons, Sam Williams, Marshawn Kneeland, Donovan Ezeuiruaku, Dante Fowler, and Payton Turner. Aside from Osa Odighizuwa, the interior defensive line is a major question mark. Defensive tackle Mazi Smith is hoping to live up to his first-round draft selection by continuing to develop, and the emergence of rookie defensive tackle Jay Toia during OTAs is intriguing but let's not put too much pressure on the kid. Advertisement Thomas, now 29, could serve as a key rotational piece throughout the season for the Cowboys and hopefully have a late-career resurgence. ... with a reach deep inside himself for all of that untapped potential.
