Couple rescued from bonded labour in Anaji village
According to a press note issued by collector K J Praveen Kumar, the couple had borrowed Rs 2,70,000 from an individual in Thanjavur, and five months ago, they were sent to Anaji to work as herders on a patta land owned by an individual named Anandan.
Based on a complaint, the district officials held an inspection on August 7 and found the couple working as herders for a monthly wage of Rs 9,000. They were treated as bonded labourers and were not provided access to basic facilities, stated the press note.
The two were provided compensation through the labour welfare department and were sent to their native village with the support of revenue and police officials, added the press note.

Teenager electrocuted on school campus to get new house in Kerala
Kollam (Kerala), Aug 10 (PTI) The family of a 13-year-old student who was electrocuted at an aided school campus last month will soon get a new house, with Kerala General Education Minister V Sivankutty laying the foundation stone here on Sunday. Mithun, a student of Thevalakkara Boys High School in Kollam district, died after coming into contact with a live electric wire on the school premises. Opposition parties had criticised the state government and the General Education Department over the incident. The new house will be built in the same locality where the family currently lives, the minister's office said in a statement. The project is being implemented under the aegis of the Kerala Scouts and Guides, of which Sivankutty is the state president. The 1,000 sq ft house, comprising three bedrooms and other amenities, will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 20 lakh. The government aims to complete the work and hand over the keys within four months. Apart from the house, the government has announced various financial assistance measures for the family. These include Rs 10 lakh each from the state government and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Rs 11 lakh from the Kerala School Teachers' Association (KSTA), and Rs 3 lakh from the General Education Department. The educational expenses of Mithun's brother will also be fully covered by the department, Sivankutty said. Local representatives and officials were present during the foundation stone ceremony. Uttarakhand HC directs notice before arrest in fraud and cheating case involving over Rs 19L
DEHRADUN: The high court has mandated that a notice must be issued before the arrest of the accused in a fraud and cheating case involving over Rs 19 lakh. The court directed the police to serve a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure) prior to any arrest and to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Supreme Court in the Arnesh Kumar vs State of Bihar case. Justice Pankaj Purohit's single bench made this decisive ruling concerning the arrest of Raghavendra Mishra, a resident of Pantnagar, who is accused of deception. Mishra allegedly impersonated a district magistrate to convince an individual to obtain a food fertiliser agency and promised employment for children. On July 22, 2025, Jyoti Bisht from Kashipur filed a report at ITI Police Station in Udham Singh Nagar, alleging that Raghavendra Kumar Mishra, his wife Preeti Mishra, and their adopted daughter Anshika Tiwari defrauded her late husband, Suresh Singh Bisht, of approximately Rs 19.8 lakh. They purported to secure an agency and licence for food fertilisers (agricultural medicines), secure jobs for children, and fabricate certificates. In January 2025, they demanded an additional Rs 7 lakh, threatening that failure to comply would result in the forfeiture of the previously provided money. She stated that the financial and mental strain led her husband to suffer a brain haemorrhage on January 15, 2025, resulting in his death on January 22 at Max Hospital in Delhi. When she sought the return of the money, the accused resorted to abuse and death threats. After receiving no response despite complaints to the local police and the SSP, Jyoti Bisht approached the HC. The court, while disposing of the petition in accordance with the Supreme Court's directions in the Arnesh Kumar case, clarified that because the maximum punishment for the accused sections is seven years, issuing a notice before arrest is mandatory. Gutkha, banned tobacco products worth Rs 53 lakh seized in Bhiwandi
Thane, Aug 10 (PTI) Gutkha and banned tobacco products worth Rs 53 lakh were seized from a vehicle in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Sunday. A team from the crime branch intercepted a Karnataka-registered vehicle at Narpoli toll plaza on Friday and recovered gutkha, paan masala and other banned products, which were being transported for sale, police inspector Mithun Bhoir said. 'We have registered a case under various provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the transporter from Karnataka," he said.
