
NASA Urges Public To Look At Night Sky Now As ‘Nova' Nears
T Corona Borealis is a dim star that will briefly become a nova (new star) sometime during 2025, increasing from +10 magnitude, which is invisible to the naked eye, to +2 magnitude, which is about as bright as Polaris, the North Star.
It's a 'cataclysmic variable star' and a 'recurrent nova' — a star that brightens dramatically on a known timescale, in this case about 80 years. That last happened in 1946, so it's due any day now.
Astronomers first predicted T CrB would explode between April and September 2024 after it suddenly dimmed in 2023 — a telltale sign that an explosion is imminent. However, that didn't happen. It was then predicted by scientists to 'go nova' on Thursday, March 27, 2025, but that also failed to happen.
The 'Blaze Star' is about 3,000 light-years away from the solar system. When it does finally 'go nova,' it will become visible to the naked eye for a few nights.
Unless you know where that star is in the night sky, it's not going to be an impactful event. NASA's Preston Dyches makes that point in a new blog post published this week — and it includes a valuable sky chart (below) showing everyone where to look.
T Coronae Borealis is a dim star in a constellation called Corona Borealis, "Northern Crown," a crescent of seven stars easily visible after dark from the Northern Hemisphere. 'You'll find Corona Borealis right in between the two bright stars Arcturus and Vega, and you can use the Big Dipper's handle to point you to the right part of the sky,' writes Dyches. 'Try having a look for it on clear, dark nights before the nova, so you'll have a comparison when a new star suddenly becomes visible there.'
He advises practicing finding Corona Borealis in the eastern part of the sky during the first half of the night after dark during May, 'so you have a point of comparison when the T CrB nova appears there."'
T Coronae Borealis is a binary star system that consists of two stars at the end of their lives: a white dwarf star that's exhausted its fuel and is cooling down and a red giant star that's cooling and expanding as it ages, expelling hydrogen as it does.
That material is gathering on the surface of the white dwarf. When it reaches a critical point, it triggers a thermonuclear explosion that causes a sudden and dramatic increase in brightness. The explosion only affects its surface, leaving the white dwarf intact, so the whole process can occur again and again, according to NASA.

NASA Telescope Spots a Previously Unknown Moon of Uranus
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has found a previously unknown moon orbiting Uranus. NASA announced the discovery on Tuesday, adding that the moon was first spotted on Feb. 2. Scientists estimate that the newly discovered moon is about six miles in diameter. Its 'tiny' size is likely why other telescopes—and the Voyager 2 spacecraft that conducted a flyby nearly four decades ago—hadn't caught sight of it before, according to NASA. By comparison, Earth's Moon has a mean diameter of more than 2,000 miles, and Uranus' largest moon, Titania, has a diameter of roughly 1,000 miles. 'It's a small moon but a significant discovery,' Maryame El Moutamid, a lead scientist in the Southwest Research Institute's Solar System Science and Exploration Division, said in NASA's announcement. Before this discovery, Uranus—the seventh planet from the Sun—was known to have 28 moons. The planet's moons have often been dubbed the 'literary moons' because they're all named after characters from works by William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. The planet has five major moons: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. The new moon, which brings Uranus' total number of known moons to 29, is currently designated at S/2025 U1 but doesn't have an official name yet. A name will need to be approved by the International Astronomical Union, which is responsible for naming and designating astronomical objects, according to NASA. The space agency added that the discovery hasn't yet gone through the peer-review process. Before this year, the most recently discovered moon, designated at S/2023 U1, was sighted in November 2023. Matthew Tiscareno, a member of the research team who is part of the SETI Institute, said in NASA's announcement that the latest discovery makes 'it likely that even more complexity remains to be discovered' when it comes to the moons orbiting Uranus. 'There's probably a lot more of them and we just need to keep looking,' Tiscareno told The Associated Press.

NASA pilot program to use citizen science to improve hurricane response
A National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) pilot program will utilize citizen science to help expedite hurricane disaster recovery. The space agency -- along with the Globe Program, a global science and education program -- is spearheading its new Response Mapper program, which will use before-and-after photos submitted by the public to track conditions on the ground. Through the summer and fall, NASA is inviting the public to participate in the program, especially for those who live in the Southeast, where many tropical cyclones can have an impact. "Your contributions could ultimately help emergency managers make faster and better-informed decisions when it matters most and strengthen your community's ability to respond and recover from disasters," NASA said. The time-stamped and geotagged images will be shared with emergency responders, in addition to data from satellites and field reports, according to NASA. "NASA Response Mappers is a great opportunity to take action and support emergency response efforts before a storm even strikes," Rebecca Lewis, co-director of the GLOBE Implementation Office, told ABC News. "NASA provides crucial data to emergency responders during disasters such as hurricanes, flooding, and fires." Disaster response teams often face challenges when obtaining "clear, localized" information, especially in rural areas, NASA said. Satellite imagery offers a wide-area view of hazards but may miss short-lived impacts due to factors such as cloud cover, orbit timing or data processing delays. Satellites can also miss finer details that photos taken closer to the ground could encapsulate. "We're exploring how citizen science can support disaster response in ways that Earth observation data alone can't," said Kristen Okorn, a coordinator for NASA's Disasters Response Coordination System, in a statement. "A single photo of land cover, whether it is a flooded street, fallen trees or even an undamaged area, can offer helpful context." But when combined with other observations, citizen-submitted photos can help verify conditions on the ground and fill any blind spots, Okorn said. A photo showing debris that fell after a storm could help first responders determine where to send cleanup crews, while a photo of cropland can help NASA inform state and federal agencies that are trying to ascertain any potential crop losses, according to NASA. "Citizen science gives us ground truth,' said Joshua Barnes, manager for NASA's Disasters Response Coordination System, in a statement. "The more eyes on the ground, the better we can serve communities in need." Citizens can share photos by downloading the GLOBE Observer app on their smartphone and joining the NASA Response Mappers team. Users can then use the app to take land cover photos of the same location over time, "ideally" once a week or month, according to NASA. The project is "especially great" for community members curious about science and their environment; amateur storm watchers or nature photographers and those who want to support disaster resilience. However, citizen scientists are reminded to stay safe and never take photos during dangerous conditions. "Watch your data make a difference through maps and updates from the NASA Response Mappers team," NASA said. The program is expected to improve data that directly supports hurricane disaster response efforts. It will also empower people to take action to help their communities before a potential storm hits. The program will run through Oct. 31. "At the end of the season, we hope to tell a story that begins with everyday people helping NASA deliver life-saving insights," Barnes said. "And it can all start with a photo."

Manhattan-sized interstellar object appears to emit its own light: Harvard scientist
Interstellar object 3I/ATLAS — which is zooming through our inner solar system — appears to be emitting its own light, according to Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb. The observation by Loeb, if verified, would contradict NASA's classification of the Manhattan-sized object as a comet, the scientist argues in a new blog post. 4 An image of 3I/ATLAS taken by the Hubble Telescope on July 21, according to NASA. AP Advertisement Loeb and a colleague analyzed photos released by NASA of the object in determining that the source of its glow is likely not from the sun. The astrophysicist wrote the 'brightness profile around 3I/ATLAS implies that the nucleus dominates the observed light.' 'The simplest interpretation is that the nucleus of 3I/ATLAS produces most of the light,' he wrote in the paper published Sunday. Advertisement The level of light observed on 3I/ATLAS could be achieved 'from a source diameter smaller than 100 meters,' according to Loeb. This shift in understanding the light source would also mean that 3I/ATLAS is quite smaller than initially thought, and more comparable in size to the two other known interstellar objects, Oumuamua and Borisov. 4 Images taken by the Hubble Telescope show the object glowing at its front end and not having any comet tail. This possibility is highly unlikely, given the scarce reservoir of radioactive elements in interstellar space,' Loeb wrote. 4 The trajectory of the object brings it through our inner Solar System in perfect position to possibly observe Earth. NASA/JPL-Caltech 'Alternatively, 3I/ATLAS could be a spacecraft powered by nuclear energy, and the dust emitted from its frontal surface might be from dirt that accumulated on its surface during its interstellar travel,' Loeb conjectured, adding, 'This cannot be ruled out, but requires better evidence to be viable.' Advertisement Loeb argued this conclusion is bolstered by 3I/Atlas' 'fine-tuned trajectory.' That suspicious trajectory will see the object blocked from Earth's view by the sun just as it will get its closest to our pale blue dot. It will also make passes of Mars and Jupiter, adding to Loeb's suspicions that this could be a reconnaissance mission conducted by an inquisitive and interstellar intelligence. 4 The object was first discovered by the NASA-funded ATLAS survey telescope in Chile on July1, according to NASA. ATLAS/University of Hawaii/NASA Loeb is now calling for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to use its HiRISE camera to make observations of 3I/ATLAS when it passes by 17 million miles away in the first week of October. He has also called for NASA to direct its Juno craft, currently orbiting Jupiter, to make what observations it can when 3I/ATLAS passes nearby next spring. NASA has maintained that 3I/ATLAS is merely a comet. Loeb pointed out to The Post that earlier this year NASA claimed to discover a new asteroid which turned out to merely be the Tesla Roadster that Elon Musk launched into space.
