‘Not our kenyalang': Affin Bank slammed for mistaking Sarawak's iconic hornbill
Yong highlights the difference between the hornbill species during the dinner.
KUCHING (May 16): The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak organising secretary Violet Yong has called on Affin Bank to issue a correction and public apology for using the wrong hornbill species on a bank card designed to represent Sarawak, calling it a 'cultural misrepresentation'.
Speaking during a DAP Sarawak fundraising dinner here on Thursday, Yong said that the hornbill depicted is the 'Great Hornbill' – a species not native to Sarawak.
'The Hornbill shown on the card is called the Great Hornbill which can only be found in West Malaysia, India, China, Thailand, and Vietnam, among others.
'It is not the Rhinoceros Hornbill or locally known as 'Burung Kenyalang', the state bird of Sarawak and how can Affin Bank use a wrong identity to represent Sarawak?.
'The Sarawak state hornbill has a black neck, while the one on the card has a white neck, confirming it is the wrong species,' she said.
Given that the Sarawak government holds a 31.25 per cent stake in Affin Bank, Yong expressed disappointment that such a mistake occurred.
'This should not have happened as the card is meant to represent Sarawak and none of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders pointed this out.
'If this card is our pride, Affin should use the correct hornbill species for it as I believe that the card's graphic designer is not a Sarawakian,' she emphasised.
Yong urged the bank to recall the card and replace it with the correct image of the Rhinoceros Hornbill, while also issuing a formal apology to the people of Sarawak.
As of press time, Affin Bank has yet to issue a public response on the matter.
The event, themed 'Rocket Night', drew over 1,000 attendees and was graced by DAP Malaysia chairman Gobind Singh Deo, who is also Digital Minister cum Damansara MP.
Its publicity secretary cum Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, meanwhile, delivered his speech via live video conference while abroad.

Gawai Dayak: Tiong joins festive celebrations at longhouses in Bintulu
BINTULU (June 3): Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, together with his delegation from the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), celebrated the first day of Gawai Dayak by visiting six longhouses in Kemena and Suai. One of the highlights of the visit was the officiation of the Women's Bureau at Rumah Inggol. Throughout the journey, he also made time to engage directly with longhouse residents, listening attentively to the challenges they face, including issues related to livelihoods and daily living. He noted each concern and pledged to follow up on them, urging the community to maintain close contact with his team based in Bintulu for further collaboration and resolution. 'Despite my limited presence in the Bintulu office due to ministry commitments, I remain in constant communication with my officers to stay informed on local developments and issues,' he added. He emphasised that he would continue coordinating, following up, and making decisions to address concerns as efficiently as possible. 'This year's Gawai celebration was also made more special by the presence of friends from Peninsular Malaysia, especially those of Chinese descent who came to experience Sarawak's unique cultural festivities firsthand. 'It not only deepens understanding and mutual recognition between different regions but also fosters a harmonious coexistence of cultures. 'Additionally, it supports the growth of related sectors such as tourism, which contributes to national prosperity and economic progress,' he said.

Yong slams DBKK over tax move

Kota Kinabalu: Former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee criticised City Hall (DBKK) for assisting Federal tax authorities in pursuing small traders while the State is denied billions in constitutional revenue. 'Why is DBKK playing Federal tax collector role?' Yong said in a statement, here, Sunday, condemning DBKK's collaboration with the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) in targeting hawkers labelled as 'inactive' taxpayers. He said LHDN collected RM5.7 billion from Sabah in 2024 and targets RM6.2 billion for 2025, averaging RM6 billion annually. 'This excludes other tax revenues collected by Customs and other Federal agencies in Sabah. Despite these substantial collections, Sabah has not received its rightful 40 per cent constitutional share amounting to RM2.4 billion from the RM6 billion in tax revenues. Instead, Sabah receives only an interim payment of RM600 million, a figure plucked from nowhere,' he said. Yong said there is absolutely no reason for the Federal Government to delay making annual payments of at least RM2 billion to the Sabah Government. He said the targeted hawkers and micro businesses are not major tax evaders but small, informal traders already battling rising costs, subsidy cuts and declining purchasing power. 'Enforcing tax compliance in this climate, while RM2 billion in Sabah's share remains unreturned, only worsens economic fragility and damages local economic resilience,' he said. He called on DBKK to adjust its mindset and stop aligning with Federal LHDN enforcement while the billions owed to this region remain unpaid. 'DBKK should not contradict its role as a local government agency in uplifting livelihoods in Kota Kinabalu city,' he said. DBKK urged to stop acting as federal tax collector
Yong KOTA KINABALU (June 1): Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) should stop playing the role of federal tax collector to hunt down inactive taxpayers, said former chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee. He said these hawkers and micro businesses are not major tax evaders. They are small, informal traders already battling rising costs, subsidy cuts, and declining purchasing power. Yong said the CEO of Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri Malaysia (Inland Revenue Board) had announced that LHDN Sabah collected RM5.7 billion in taxes from Sabah in 2024. LHDN also targets tax revenues of RM6.2 billion for this year 2025. This means an average of RM6 billion in taxes from Sabah per year for 2024 and 2025 alone. 'It is not rocket science that 40% of that RM6 billion tax revenues is RM2.4 billion. This RM6 billion tax revenues excludes other tax revenues collected by the Customs Department and other federal agencies in Sabah. 'Yet Sabah has not received its rightful 40 per cent share of that revenue that Sabah is entitled to under the constitution,' he said in a statement on Sunday. Yong said there is absolutely no reason for the federal government to delay making annual payments of at least RM2 billion to the Sabah government. Instead, Sabah is paid an interim amount of only RM600 million, which is a figure plucked from nowhere.
