Yong slams DBKK over tax move
Published on: Monday, June 02, 2025
Published on: Mon, Jun 02, 2025 Text Size: Yong called on DBKK to adjust its mindset and stop aligning with Federal LHDN enforcement while the billions owed to this region remain unpaid. Kota Kinabalu: Former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee criticised City Hall (DBKK) for assisting Federal tax authorities in pursuing small traders while the State is denied billions in constitutional revenue. 'Why is DBKK playing Federal tax collector role?' Yong said in a statement, here, Sunday, condemning DBKK's collaboration with the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) in targeting hawkers labelled as 'inactive' taxpayers. He said LHDN collected RM5.7 billion from Sabah in 2024 and targets RM6.2 billion for 2025, averaging RM6 billion annually. 'This excludes other tax revenues collected by Customs and other Federal agencies in Sabah. Despite these substantial collections, Sabah has not received its rightful 40 per cent constitutional share amounting to RM2.4 billion from the RM6 billion in tax revenues. Instead, Sabah receives only an interim payment of RM600 million, a figure plucked from nowhere,' he said. Yong said there is absolutely no reason for the Federal Government to delay making annual payments of at least RM2 billion to the Sabah Government. He said the targeted hawkers and micro businesses are not major tax evaders but small, informal traders already battling rising costs, subsidy cuts and declining purchasing power. 'Enforcing tax compliance in this climate, while RM2 billion in Sabah's share remains unreturned, only worsens economic fragility and damages local economic resilience,' he said. He called on DBKK to adjust its mindset and stop aligning with Federal LHDN enforcement while the billions owed to this region remain unpaid. 'DBKK should not contradict its role as a local government agency in uplifting livelihoods in Kota Kinabalu city,' he said. Yong said until the Federal Government honours the 40 per cent entitlement without further delay, tax enforcement in this region should be re-evaluated, paused if necessary and guided by consultation with the Sabah Government and Sabah business organisations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Court to hear Muhyiddin's reference bid on August 28
Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 By: Ho Kit Yen, FMT Text Size: Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here will hear Muhyiddin Yassin's bid to refer legal questions to the apex court on the validity of certain provisions under the Sedition Act on Aug 28. The former prime minister is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. Justice Jamil Hussin fixed the date after lawyer Joshua Tay, appearing for Muhyiddin, told the court that the defence and prosecution had agreed on the date. The court then instructed the prosecution and defence to file their submissions by Aug 14. Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani appeared for the prosecution. Muhyiddin allegedly said he was not invited by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be sworn in as prime minister following the 2022 general election, despite having obtained the majority support of 115 MPs. If found guilty, the Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president will face a jail term that could extend to three years or a maximum fine of RM5,000. Muhyiddin was initially charged at the Gua Musang sessions court in August last year. On Nov 27, Justice Azmi Abdullah allowed his application to have the case transferred to the Kuala Lumpur High Court. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Online fraud in Melaka costs victims RM30.85m in five months
MELAKA: A total of 934 online scam cases with losses amounting to RM30.85 million were recorded in Melaka from January 1 to June 2 this year. State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee deputy chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said all the cases were reported through the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) and the police. During the same period, authorities arrested 531 individuals linked to online scam syndicates, with 312 of them charged in court. 'This year's largest individual loss involved a victim who lost RM2.9 million. Alarmingly, more professionals—including doctors, bank officers and corporate managers—are falling victim to these scams, not just ordinary citizens or civil servants,' he told reporters here today. He noted that while total losses were slightly lower than the same period last year, online scams remain a serious concern and ongoing awareness efforts are crucial. The most common scams reported involved fake investments on Telegram and Facebook, bogus job offers, and non-existent house-cleaning services. 'Despite being aware of the risks, many victims were lured in due to greed and impulsive decisions,' he added. Mohd Noor Helmy was speaking after launching the Content Creator Enhancement Workshop under the Anti-Scam Awareness Campaign, which saw the participation of around 50 individuals, including MADANI community leaders. The programme, held in collaboration with the Melaka Information Department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the police, also trained participants to create digital content and serve as information agents to raise public awareness of online scams.

Sime Darby Property ups minimum wage for B40 workers by 80pct to RM2,700
PETALING JAYA: Sime Darby Property Bhd has raised the minimum living wage for employees in the B40 income group by 80 per cent, from RM1,500 to RM2,700 a month, as part of its commitment to employee well-being and inclusive growth. Its chairman Datuk Rizal Rickman Ramli said the adjustment takes into account the increased cost of living and aims to provide better financial support for lower-income employees. "This initiative highlights our commitment to financial stability and the well-being of our workforce, particularly those most impacted by rising living costs," he said in the group's integrated annual report 2024. The wage hike is part of Sime Darby Property's wider workforce development efforts under its SHIFT25 transformation plan. In 2024, the company recorded a 43 per cent increase in employee training hours and introduced new programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, sustainable development and urban biodiversity. Rizal said these measures come as the group looks to upskill its workforce in line with evolving industry demands and growing environmental, social and governance expectations. Sime Darby Property's new minimum wage of RM2,700 exceeds the national statutory floor by RM1,000. Under the government's revised minimum wage policy, the monthly wage floor was raised to RM1,700 beginning February this year for employers with five or more workers. Companies with fewer than five employees have until August to comply. Non-compliance is an offence under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 (Act 732) and may result in penalties. The new national rate, announced in Budget 2025, is expected to benefit over 4.3 million workers across the country.
