
Sime Darby Property ups minimum wage for B40 workers by 80pct to RM2,700
PETALING JAYA: Sime Darby Property Bhd has raised the minimum living wage for employees in the B40 income group by 80 per cent, from RM1,500 to RM2,700 a month, as part of its commitment to employee well-being and inclusive growth.
Its chairman Datuk Rizal Rickman Ramli said the adjustment takes into account the increased cost of living and aims to provide better financial support for lower-income employees.
"This initiative highlights our commitment to financial stability and the well-being of our workforce, particularly those most impacted by rising living costs," he said in the group's integrated annual report 2024.
The wage hike is part of Sime Darby Property's wider workforce development efforts under its SHIFT25 transformation plan.
In 2024, the company recorded a 43 per cent increase in employee training hours and introduced new programmes in areas such as artificial intelligence, sustainable development and urban biodiversity.
Rizal said these measures come as the group looks to upskill its workforce in line with evolving industry demands and growing environmental, social and governance expectations.
Sime Darby Property's new minimum wage of RM2,700 exceeds the national statutory floor by RM1,000.
Under the government's revised minimum wage policy, the monthly wage floor was raised to RM1,700 beginning February this year for employers with five or more workers. Companies with fewer than five employees have until August to comply.
Non-compliance is an offence under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 (Act 732) and may result in penalties.
The new national rate, announced in Budget 2025, is expected to benefit over 4.3 million workers across the country.

Govt's data collection directive sparks privacy concerns, says Dr Wee
PETALING JAYA: The government's efforts to collate detailed records of phone calls and internet usage from telecommunications firms are a violation of the people's right to their personal data, said Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong. He also said there is no need to have such detailed information for facilitating policymaking in the information, communications and technology (ICT) sector, and the tourism sector, as clarified by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). 'This is not a question of whether we trust in the current government or not. The question is, why does the government want to collect such detailed information on its citizens? 'Today, we say it's to study tourism statistics. We don't know what it'll be for tomorrow. 'You want to calculate tourists? You want to calculate active broadband users? You don't need the people's personal data. Aggregate data is enough,' Dr Wee said in a posting on his Facebook page on Saturday (June 7). It was previously reported that, according to industry sources, the government in April had ordered telcos in Malaysia to hand over detailed records of phone calls and internet logs for the first three months of this year, supposedly for the government's 'Mobile Phone Data' project. The records demanded purportedly include information about call logs, IP call records, location, latitude and longitude. It was also reported that if the telcos failed to comply, it would be considered an offence under the Communications and Multimedia Act, carrying a penalty of RM20,000 fine or six months' jail. MCMC has since explained that this move is to support evidence-based policymaking in two key sectors, i.e. the ICT and tourism sectors. The commission also stressed that the data will be anonymised before it is submitted to them and that no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' MCMC said. However, Dr Wee said anonymising the data is not enough to maintain the privacy of the users, especially in an increasingly connected world. 'If you're collecting data on who we call, how long we talk, our Internet IP, and our location, including latitude and longitude - with such consistent location data showing the exact time and day, anyone with access to this data can easily match it back to our identities. 'Our identities can be uncovered very easily,' he said. On top of that, he added, there is also data from the mobile app MySejahtera, e-wallets, CCTVs, Touch n' Go and bank records which can be cross-checked to identify someone. MCMC had also previously said they engaged extensively with all telcos over the past two years on the safe handover of the data, but Dr Wee questioned the need to threaten the telcos if this is true. 'If it is true that this is all safe and it has all been agreed upon for two years, why is there a need to threaten the telcos?' Ultimately, he said, this is not about politics but about the rights of the people. 'Our personal data is not the right of any government, whether today, tomorrow or those to come. 'When the government starts collecting such detailed data, that has already crossed the line. 'The Malaysian people must raise this issue. Our data is not a plaything.'

Sabah GLCs mostly ‘blackholes'

Kota Kinabalu: A majority of the 250-odd Sabah GLCs (Government-linked companies) are like 'blackholes' sucking away financial resources from Sabah. But there are a few bright stars. 'These statutory bodies and GLCs produced only RM143m dividends to the Sabah Government, of which RM50m was from SMJ Energy. Only a small number can generate dividends for the government. The performance of the rest is pathetic,' said Datuk John Lo, a former banker and now in the Sabah Economic Action Council (SEAC). Advertisement The other profitable GLCs include Sabah Foundation's subsidiary Innoprise, Sabah Energy Corporation, Sogip, Sogdc, POIC Lahad Datu, Suria Capital, Sabah Credit Corporation and Sawit Kinabalu. Lo was a guest panel speaker at the NGO Sabar – Kopi Tiam Council podcast on 'Oversight & Reform of government-Linked Companies (GLCs) Transparency, accountability & Corruption Prevention session, recently. 'Most are either non-performing or underperforming,' Lo said and pointed out that GLCs hold many monopolistic rights for example, cement [Sabah Cement Industries], ports [Suria, POIC Sandakan and POIC Lahad Datu], water [Jetama] and fishing landing rights [Safma]. They have been granted very cheap but extremely prime land, most of them at RM1,000 premium. [Innoprise, SUDC, subsidiary of Sedco, Suria, SICC, Sabah Energy, TAED.]. Advertisement Others have been vast acreage of valuable agricultural land for free or at nominal premium. [Sawit Kinabalu, KPD, Sabah Softwood.] Then there are those who have been granted cheap and valuable land for industrial park [KKIP, Sogip, POIC Sandakan and POIC Lahad Datu, Asian Supply Base in Labuan] or granted concession rights in oil and gas, river and sea sand [Sabah Energy, Sabah Gas, SMJ Energy, Sedco]. GLCs are also into hotels, resorts and jungle resorts [Innoprise, Sedco and Sabah Air] or granted exclusive JV preference with Sabahan and non-Sabahan companies. 'Most significantly, many GLCs have become a huge liability and drag on Sabah's economic growth. Allowing GLCs to continue without proper governance will result in serious economic consequences. Sabah can never catch up,' he said. In most cases the political appointments of chairmen, board of directors and senior management have been inappropriate. 'GLCs are still bleeding losses year in year out. Sabahans are subsiding these losses that have easily run into billions the last 35 years. The accumulated losses are staggering,' he said. What is worse is that some of these GLCs have sold or entered into JVs in many valuable assets like prime commercial and agriculture land, buildings, monopolies and concessions, most of which are lopsided against Sabah. These GLCs have taken huge loans from the government and banks [especially SDB] that they cannot service or repay, often forcing Sabah taxpayers to bail them out. 'They enter into many lopsided JV agreements against the interests of Sabah. They have the greatest number of failed JV projects that need rescue by 'white knights'. 'These billions of dividends can be tax free and can transform Sabah's economic ownership back to Sabahans. The greatest impact is job creation. If each GLC, on average, can create an additional 100 jobs, there will be additional 25,000 jobs!' said Lo. 'This money could have been used for the hard-core poor, repair or investment in infrastructures, health, scholarships or to build two or three universities. 'The GLCs have many JV projects that are suspended or non-start for years.' 'SDB's revamp is showing encouraging results. Keep an eye on Sabah Energy as it will be the new performing star.' Lo was pleased that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has appointed suitable Sabahans to head some boards and management e.g. SDB, SMJ Energy, Sabah Energy, Sogip, Sogdc and the latest, a new Group GM for Sedco. Hajiji has appointed advisors on the economy, oil and gas, energy, tourism and international affairs. Notably, he said state Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun has appointed a task force on GLCs. Masidi has also appointed an oversight committee for GLCs. 'Hopefully, the revamp of GLCs will lead some of them to be listed on Bursa. Bursa will impose demanding and stringent governance requirements on these GLCs. 'GLCs that have independent board of directors and professional management appointed by Hajiji and Masidi are turning around with noticeable improvements. 'It is imperative that future Sabah governments continue to revamp, rationalise the GLCs. 'Focusing on and sorting out the mess in Sabah's GLCs is a critical economic issue for every Sabahan, especially for the present young generation and their children. These GLCs are eroding away their future. 'I hope all Sabahans, every man, every woman, every voter, after listening to Sabar's podcast, will support the reformation, transformation and rationalization of Sabah's GLCs. Tobacco ban to hit sales, footfall at convenience stores, mini-marts
KUALA LUMPUR: Convenience store chains and mini-marts across Malaysia are bracing for a significant hit from the impending ban on the open display of tobacco products, a regulatory move that could shake up revenue models heavily reliant on tobacco sales. The Ministry of Health announced the tobacco display ban in October 2024, initially set for April 1, 2025, but now phased with full enforcement by Oct 1, 2025. Retailers must store tobacco and vape products in closed cabinets, not openly. Analysts caution that major players like 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd (SEM), which generates about 33 per cent of its total revenue from tobacco products, are particularly vulnerable. Other chains like KK Super Mart and MyNews are also expected to be affected, though to varying degrees depending on their reliance on tobacco sales. In contrast, 99 Speedmart may be less impacted given its stronger emphasis on household essentials and grocery items. "Tobacco purchases frequently trigger impulse buys of snacks, beverages, and other essentials. With the display ban, these secondary sales could decline, potentially reducing both store traffic and basket size," said an analyst who requested anonymity. He added that convenience retailers will need to revamp their shelving layouts and possibly retrain staff, incurring compliance costs that could weigh heavily on smaller chains with fewer resources. CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd said that despite a temporary reprieve, it warns that companies like SEM are not out of the woods. "Although the delay offers SEM some near-term reprieve, the eventual enforcement of the ban may weigh on its top-line performance," CIMB cautioned in a research note, citing an expected decline in tobacco-related sales. CIMB said that SEM continues to face mounting regulatory and cost challenges, despite reporting steady revenue growth for the first quarter of 2025 (Q1 2025). SEM reported a 10.4 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase in revenue for Q1 2025, largely driven by 7.1 per cent same-store sales growth. The growth was attributed to a low base effect from Q1 2024, longer operating hours, and an accelerated rollout of the modern 7-Café format. However, rising costs are eroding gains. The Feb 1, 2025, nationwide minimum wage hike to RM1,700 and longer business hours pushed SEM's operating expenses up by 10.2 per cent YoY. As a result, EBITDA margin remained flat at 11.8 per cent, while core net profit edged up just 0.5 per cent YoY. Looking ahead, CIMB expects QoQ earnings improvement in Q2 2025, helped by post-Ramadan consumer spending and continued expansion of 7-Café outlets. Margins are forecast to stay steady, supported by higher-margin fresh food sales and improved operating leverage. "We understand that SEM remains committed to its store opening target (of 100 new outlets this year) and will be accelerating its store rollout in subsequent quarters to meet its target by end-Dec 2025," it said. Despite the positive growth trajectory, CIMB maintains a 'Reduce' rating on the stock, with a target price of RM1.63, citing long-term challenges such as intensifying competition in the convenience retail space and mounting cost pressures. SEM's share price has remained largely unchanged in 2025, fluctuating between RM1.96 and RM2.00, with a brief dip to RM1.90 in late January. Notable shareholders include Classic Union Group Ltd (26.3 per cent), Berjaya Group founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun (22.4 per cent), and PERKESO (4.6 per cent), with public investors holding 14 per cent.
