Tips to help manage your buy now, pay later loans

Between rising prices and dwindling job growth, using 'buy now, pay later' on everything from concert tickets to fast food deliveries is becoming increasingly appealing. But greater use could also mean greater trouble, as more people fall behind on repaying these loans. Buy now, pay later loans gained popularity during the pandemic, especially among young people. While these loans can help you make large purchases without paying interest or undergoing a hard inquiry in your credit report, they can also easily be overused. About 4 in 10 Americans under the age of 45 say they've used "buy now, pay later″ services when spending on entertainment or restaurant meals, or when paying for essentials like groceries or medical care, according to a poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Buy now, pay later loans were not previously reported to the three major credit reporting bureaus. But consumers will soon see the impact of buy now, pay later loans on their FICO credit scores. Whether you're a first-time or recurring user of buy now, pay later plans, here are some expert recommendations to use this tool responsibly. Focus on needs vs. wants Buy now, pay later plans divide purchases in monthly installments, typically in four payments. These loans are marketed as having low or no interest. Klarna, Afterpay, PayPal Later and Affirm are among the most popular buy now, pay later companies. These loans should ideally be used for large purchases or necessities, said Lauren Bringle, Accredited Financial Counselor at Self Financial. Bringle recommends asking yourself these questions before purchasing: Can I survive without this purchase right now? Do I need it for work, school, or a basic household need? Buy now, pay later is best used when you have a plan for the purchase, not for impulse buys. For example, when you need to buy a computer for school or a new refrigerator for your house, recommended Tyler Horn, head of planning at Origin, a budgeting app. Pause before purchasing Before deciding to take out a buy now, pay later loan, it's a good idea to pause and consider if it's the best financial decision for you, recommended Erika Rasure, Chief Financial Wellness advisor for Beyond Finance. Buy now, pay later plans can be positive budgeting tools when used strategically. However, it's essential you know your spending behaviors before using them, said Rasure. If you're an emotional spender, it might be hard for you to moderate your use of this tool and you could end up adding to your financial stress. 'Buy now, pay later can become a coping mechanism rather than a financial tool that can get you a good deal or improve your cash flow,' said Rasure. If you have other payments due, such as credit card or student loan payments, consider how a buy now, pay later loan will add to your monthly payments, recommended Sarah Rathner, Senior Writer for NerdWallet. Read the fine print Like credit cards, each buy now, pay later loan has terms and conditions that can vary by purchase and providers. It's crucial that you know what you're agreeing to before you sign up, recommended Michael Savino, Chief Lending Officer at Municipal Credit Union. 'Always read the fine print. Understand fees, repayment schedules, and what happens if you miss a payment or go into default,' said Savino. In general, if you miss a buy now, pay later payment, you can face fees, interest, or the possibility of being banned from using the services in the future. Avoid stacking BNPL loans You can easily run into difficulty keeping up with the cost and schedule of your repayments if you're trying to simultaneously pay off two, three or more loans, Savino said. 'Juggling multiple plans creates a blind spot and overall debt load, and multiple repayment dates are hard to manage,' Savino said. "So more loans makes it more difficult to budget.' The best approach: Stay mindful of your overall spending, and limit the number of buy now, pay later loans. Keep track of your loan(s) Whether or not you're paying for multiple buy now, pay later purchases at once, you want to be aware of where your money is going at any given time, recommended Courtney Alev, consumer advocate at Credit Karma. 'Buy now, pay later often requires automatic payments, so you want to make sure that your account is funded so that those payments are processing successfully,' recommended Jennifer Seitz, director of education at Greenlight, a financial literacy app for families. There are many ways to track your loan payments — from setting a reminder on your calendar, to creating an intricate excel spreadsheet or tracking them on an app, said Jesse Mecham, founder of the budgeting app YNAB. Finding the best method that works for you will help you stay on track and avoid late fees. Make buy now, pay later work for you For shoppers with low credit scores or no credit history, buy now, pay later loans can seem like the best, if not the only, loan option. If used moderately and responsibly, these short-term loans can be a positive lending exercise, said Savino. 'It allows you to to establish a baseline (and) get access to other affordable credit options that you can leverage that will ultimately provide financial wellness,' he added. Still, NerdWallet's Rathner emphasized that shoppers using these tools always remember that buy now, pay later is a form of borrowing money. 'It just kind of feels like you're given a little extra time to pay back," Rathner said. "But the reality is, if you miss payments, it can hurt your credit, much like missing payments with any other loan.' —— The Associated Press receives support from Charles Schwab Foundation for educational and explanatory reporting to improve financial literacy. Man Utd fans plan first protest against Sir Jim Ratcliffe as they slam 'devil in disguise'

Manchester United supporters are still fuming over the club's plight and have staged protests accusing the ownership of robbing its "history, dignity and integrity" after a disastrous season led to a 15th placed finish Manchester United fans are planning to stage a protest against Sir Jim Ratcliffe's running of the club for the first time ahead of their Premier League season opener against Arsenal this month. ‌ Ratcliffe has come under fire from a huge section of supporters over his decision-making and handling of the club since his £1.25bn investment in the club last year - quickly taking control of United's football operations. ‌ But United have had a disastrous couple of years since he joined the club, which have seen United finish seventh in the Premier League in 2023-24 before a 15th-placed finish last season. The club have also been hit by financial difficulties, which has impacted their spending in this window. ‌ Ratcliffe has embarked on a brutal cost-cutting regime at Old Trafford, with ticket prices hiked and free lunches for staff in the canteen scrapped too. Meanwhile, Joel and Avram Glazer continue to own the club in the background despite mounting calls for the Americans to leave. The 1958 supporters' group have previously staged a number of demonstrations against the club's ownership, including before the final game of the season against Aston Villa - as they accused United of stealing their "history, dignity and integrity". They have now announced their next move in a bid to make their voices heard. The group will lead a protest outside Old Trafford before the team faces the Gunners on August 17. Protesters will hold up banners in opposition to both Ratcliffe and the Glazers presence at the club, with the signs reading: "Jim can't fix this". ‌ A spokesman for The 1958 said: 'It's a new season but the same old ownership issues. Twenty years of the Glazers and their debt mountain is 20 years too long. Enough is enough. "We won't allow some natural optimism and a couple of shiny new signings to deflect from the bigger off-field picture. Jim Ratcliffe chose to get into bed with the Glazers and in our opinion is helping keep them in charge. "So on 17th August, we protest not just against the Glazers, but now also against Jim Ratcliffe – a man once seen by many, including ourselves, as a possible saviour, a beacon of hope but now revealed as complicit in the ongoing erosion of everything that makes our club what it is. ‌ "Jim Ratcliffe, you have chosen your side and it is not ours. You now stand shoulder to shoulder with the Glazers. The mask has slipped. You are no saviour. You're like a (red) devil in disguise." Ratcliffe previously admitted he could leave the club if he became as unpopular as the Americans, saying: "Eventually, if it reached the extent that the Glazer family have been abused, then I'd have to say, 'look, that's enough guys, let somebody else do this'."

Qantas frequent flyer points devalued as airline rolls out changes to loyalty program

Qantas has effectively lowered the value of its frequent flyer points after enacting significant changes to its loyalty program. The overhaul of the frequent flyer program came into effect on Tuesday, about seven months after the carrier flagged the changes in an announcement in late January. At the time, Qantas announced it would broadly increase the amount of frequent flyer points needed to redeem Classic Reward flights for the first time since 2019 and the second time since 2004. The changes mean a Classic Rewards economy seat on a Qantas service between Sydney and Melbourne has increased from 8,000 points plus $55 in fees to 9,200 points plus $55 in fees from August. A Classic Rewards business class seat on the same service has increased from 18,400 points plus $55 in fees to 19,300 points and $76 in fees. On a Qantas-operated Sydney-London flight, the existing Classic Rewards one-way economy seat cost of 55,200 points and $263 in fees has risen to 63,500 points and $263 in fees. Qantas softened the blow of its frequent flyer changes with an announcement on Tuesday that it was releasing 400,000 new Classic Reward seats across its international and domestic network. The majority of these seats will be on dedicated 'points planes', where every seat across all cabins can be secured with points, the airline said in a press release. Qantas has also lowered the amount of points needed to book domestic flights in Australia and New Zealand on its budget subsidiary Jetstar, which have been reduced from 6,400 points to 5,700, plus booking fees. Andrew Glance, the chief executive of Qantas's loyalty program, said in January the adjustments would ensure the airline could continue to grow the number of seats available to be booked with frequent flyer points. Adele Eliseo, the publisher of The Champagne Mile frequent-flyer website, said Qantas needed to honour that commitment. 'The pressure's on Qantas to really keep investing in opening their seat inventory so people can use their points – so we'll cross our fingers,' she said. Overall, Eliseo said Qantas' devaluation of its frequent flyer points was 'a pretty safe move' by the airline. Virgin Australia devalued its points by making rewards seats on its flights more expensive earlier this year and there have been similar moves by international carriers, Eliseo said. 'The real test will be: can Qantas continue to deliver rewards seats, especially in business and first class,' she said. 'People will accept the price rises if the seats are there.' 'They did a pretty good job of giving notice … even though it doesn't make it any easier when you're looking at a rewards flight and there are an additional 30,000 points added to it,' she said. Eliseo advised people to plan their trips as early as possible to have a better chance of securing rewards seats, or booking at the last minute if they can, as she said seats available on points could open up. 'Just checking as you go, and making sure you're flexible is the way to go,' she said.
