World No. 1 Test batter Joe Root will be a key player for the English team in the fifth Test against India, which is set to be played from July 31 to August 4 at The Oval in London. Root, who is England's leading run getter in Test cricket and second overall in the world, scored centuries in the first innings of the third and fourth Tests played at Lord's and Old Trafford, respectively. He would like to come up with another big score against the Shubman Gill-led side in the fifth and final Test to help the hosts win the home series with a scoreline of 3-1. During the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Root will have a chance to become the first cricketer in the world to score 6000 runs in the World Test Championship. Most runs in WTC No other in the world apart from Root has even scored 5000 runs in the WTC. The gap of runs between Root and second-placed Steve Smith is 1668 runs. Apart from that, Root will also have a chance to score 2000 Test runs against India in England. As of now, Root has 1977 runs to his credit in 19 Tests played against India in England. He needs 23 more runs to complete 2000 Test runs at home against India. Most runs for England against India (in England) In 19 Tests against England at home, Root has scored nine centuries. No other batter in the world has scored nine Test centuries at home against one team. As of now, he is tied level with Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Mahela Jayawardene. Like Root, Ponting, Kallis, and Jayawardene also scored 23 Test centuries at home. The century in the fifth Test will also help Root break Jack Hobbs' record of scoring 12 Test centuries against one team. During his playing days, Hobbs scored 12 Test centuries for England against Australia, and Root also has 12 centuries to his credit against India in Tests. If Root scores at least 22 runs in the fifth Test, then he will take his tally of Test runs to 7217 in England, and it will help him break Sachin Tendulkar's record of 7216 runs in home Tests. Wait, what? 261 IPL jerseys worth ₹6.5 lakh stolen from Wankhede Stadium

A security guard at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office in Mumbai was arrested for stealing IPL 2025 team jerseys worth ₹ 6.5 lakh. The theft took place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The accused, identified as 40-year-old Farooque Aslam Khan, allegedly stole 261 jerseys, each valued at around ₹ 2,500. Police said Khan committed the theft to fund his online gambling habit. The incident reportedly occurred on June 13 but only came to light after a routine audit revealed missing stock from the storeroom. Upon checking CCTV footage, BCCI officials saw Khan walking out with a box full of jerseys. The stolen kits were of different IPL teams, though it remains unclear whether they were meant for players or for public sale. Investigators said Khan sold the jerseys to an online dealer based in Haryana, whom he had connected with through social media. "The guard claims he haggled a bit with the online dealer, but he hasn't yet specified how much he got for the deal," a police source told TOI. The police further stated that the jerseys were sent via courier to the Haryana-based dealer, who has now been summoned for questioning. "The online dealer says he was not aware that the jerseys had been stolen," a police official said. "The guard had told the man in Haryana that the jerseys were part of a stock clearance sale due to renovation work that was going on at the office." So far, 50 of the 261 stolen jerseys have been recovered. Khan has reportedly told police that he received payment directly into his bank account but lost all the money to online gambling. "He the guard claims he lost it all to online gambling," the police source added. Authorities are now verifying his bank details to confirm his version of events.

Cricket on display during England series a matter of pride: Gautam Gambhir

India head coach Gautam Gambhir said touring England has always been a challenging assignment, but asserted that the quality of cricket in the ongoing series has made 'every cricket lover proud.' Gambhir was addressing a gathering at the India House on Monday evening to express gratitude for the fans' support during the course of the series, which saw the visitors pull off a dramatic draw in the fourth Test at Manchester. 'Touring this part of the world has always been challenging because of the history between the two countries, which can never be forgotten,' said Gambhir during his speech. 'Whenever we have toured the UK, the kind of support we have got, we cherish every bit of it. We never take anything for granted. An evening to remember as the High Commission of India in London hosted #TeamIndia! 👏 The Indian cricket team captain Shubman Gill and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir presented signed cricket bats to Honourable High Commissioner Mr. Vikram Doraiswami and Deputy High Commissioner Mr.… — BCCI (@BCCI) July 29, 2025 'Last five weeks have been really exciting for both countries with the kind of cricket that has been on display, which I'm sure has made every cricket lover proud,' he added. The Indian cricket team received a rousing welcome from community leaders, parliamentarians and sports fans at a diaspora reception hosted by the High Commission of India in London, where the squad is set for the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval from Thursday. He went on to highlight the importance of the fifth and final Test, which India needed to win to level the series that now stands 2-1 in favour of England. 'Both the teams have thrown a lot of punches and have fought for every inch. We have got one more week to go, one final push to make and one more opportunity to make our country and people out here proud,' said Gambhir. The players were cheered enthusiastically by the crowd as some of the highlights from their recent games were played out on screen. Vikram Doraiswami, India's High Commissioner to the UK, said the fighting spirit the team showed during the series was a just reflection of the country's will to fight the odds. 'It's been a great series, played in the best of spirit. But the best bit of it all is the fact that we have a chance to see Test cricket played the way it is intended to be – contests for full five days, contests that have gone to the wire, contests in which the great sense of cricket as a game that is played with intensity for five days. 'And to have our team here display what is truly the range of skills but also the fighting spirit that is now associated with Team India is also a great reflection of the fighting spirit that now stands for the new India that we are all privileged to represent here,' said Doraiswami. 'No matter what happens (in the final Test), we couldn't be more proud of who you (Team India) are, what you represent, where you came from and what you mean to all of us,' he said. Richard Gould, chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), referenced the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed off during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's UK visit last week as a sign of the immense scope of collaboration between the two nations, including sports. 'In four Test matches so far, every one of them has gone deep into the fifth day…It's difficult to remember a Test series that has really resounded as deeply as this one has, both in England and back in India, and we are all really looking forward to seeing the battle recommence at The Oval on Thursday,' said Gould. The diaspora gathering concluded with a brief in-conversation session moderated by commentator and former head coach Ravi Shastri with a few players including captain Shubman Gill. 'Before the start of the series, I felt I haven't really shown my best and I was working quite hard on my game before the series as I wanted to prove myself,' said Gill, with reference to his over 700 runs notched up during the series so far. 'It was a very hard-fought game of cricket over the past four days,' he added.
