Indian Army Allows Eid Prayers On Kolkata's Red Road After Discussions With Organisers

The Indian Army decided to alter its training programme to accommodate namaz on Red Road near Fort William, which has been a long-standing venue for Eid prayers.
The Indian Army has allowed permission to hold Eid-Ul-Adha prayers on Kolkata's Red Road – a traditional venue for the event – in respect for the age-old tradition after holding talks with the organisers.
Red Road, located in front of its Eastern Command Headquarters at Fort William, has been the traditional venue for namaz during Eid-Ul-Zuha, drawing large crowds. Every year, the organisers coordinate with the armed forces to hold the prayer gathering at the site.
Earlier, the Indian Army had denied permission for namaz on Red Road, citing 'military purpose" as the reason. A pre-scheduled Army programme was set to take place at the same time in the venue.
The Army had also informed the Kolkata Police and the Calcutta Khilafat Committee of its decision. However, after discussions between the Army and the organisers, they decided to allow the namaz to proceed, respecting the age-old tradition.
Army authorities decided to alter their training schedule to accommodate the Eid prayers. West Bengal Minister Javed Ahmed Khan confirmed that things were being sorted out through consultations between the organisers and the defence authorities over issues pertaining to the Army's own engagements.
The Calcutta Khilafat Committee had applied to the Army on May 10, seeking permission to hold the Namaz from the Netaji Statue to the outer entrance of Fort William's East Gate on Red Road.
Eid ul-Adha, or the 'Feast of Sacrifice," is the Islamic holiday that begins on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, during the Hajj. This year, the festival is likely to be celebrated in India on June 7.

A series of Israeli air strikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs on Thursday night, after the military said it would target underground Hezbollah drone factories. Plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the Lebanese capital, shortly after huge numbers of people had fled the area, clogging the roads with traffic. Lebanese news agency ANI said it counted nearly a dozen strikes, including two which were "very violent". AFP journalists in the city heard at least two strong detonations. "The IDF (military) is currently striking terror targets of the Hezbollah aerial unit," the Israeli military said in a statement on Telegram. Less than two hours earlier, its Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee had warned on social media that residents of the suburbs were "located near facilities belonging to the terrorist organisation Hezbollah" and should evacuate immediately. In a separate statement, the military had said it would "soon carry out a strike on underground UAV (drone) production infrastructure sites that were deliberately established in the heart of (the) civilian population" in Beirut. The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon wrote on X that the strikes "generated renewed panic and fear", and called for a "halt to any actions that could further undermine the cessation of hostilities". "Established mechanisms and diplomatic instruments are at the disposal of all sides to address disputes or threats, and to prevent unnecessary and dangerous escalation," it added. Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun in a statement voiced "firm condemnation of the Israeli aggression" and "flagrant violation" of a November 27 ceasefire "on the eve of a sacred religious festival," the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha. He said the strikes were "irrefutable proof of the aggressor's refusal... of a just peace in our region". Prime Minister Nawaf Salam also issued a statement condemning the strikes as a "flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty" and of a 2006 UN resolution. Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah engaged in more than a year of hostilities that began with the outbreak of the Gaza war and culminated in an intense Israeli bombing campaign and ground incursion into southern Lebanon. The November ceasefire sought to end the fighting -- which left Hezbollah severely weakened -- but Israel has continued to regularly carry out strikes in Lebanon's south. Strikes targeting Beirut's southern suburbs, considered a Hezbollah stronghold, have been rare, however. "Following Hezbollah's extensive use of UAVs as a central component of its terrorist attacks on the state of Israel, the terrorist organisation is operating to increase production of UAVs for the next war," the military statement said, calling the activities "a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon". Under the truce, Hezbollah fighters were to withdraw north of the Litani river, about 30 kilometres (nearly 19 miles) from the border, and dismantle their military posts to the south. Israel was to pull all its troops from Lebanon, but it has kept them in five positions it deems "strategic" along the frontier. The Lebanese army has been deploying in the south and removing Hezbollah infrastructure there, with prime minister Salam saying Thursday that it had dismantled "more than 500 military positions and arms depots" in the area.

Eid-ul-Zuha: Holiday for edu instts today, tomorrow; govt offices to function today
T'puram: The govt has declared holiday for all educational institutions in the state, including professional colleges, on Friday and Saturday owing to Eid-ul-Zuha. However, no holiday has been declared for govt offices on Friday as the govt has rescheduled the Bakrid holiday to Saturday, June 7, in accordance with the revised date of the festival. Earlier, the holiday was scheduled for Friday, June 6. The official holiday had to be rescheduled as the moon was not sighted on time, causing the festival to be observed a day later. IUML state general secretary PMA Salam said the state govt declared holiday for educational institutions on Friday after strong public protest. "The govt has bowed to intense protest. Instead of declaring a general holiday for all govt institutions, it has limited the holiday to educational institutions alone. Govt offices should have been included," he said. Holiday for central govt offices rescheduled Following the decision of the state govt to postpone the holiday for Eid-ul-Zuha, central govt offices in Kerala will observe the holiday on Saturday, June 7.
