Weirdest Aussie travel claims revealed

New research has revealed the surge in bizarre claims made by Aussie travellers in Thailand - from monkey bites to even missing a flight from being stuck in gridlocked traffic for six hours. While the southeast Asia destination has been a popular tourist hotspot for Aussies, the wildly popular HBO series The White Lotus, has ignited fresh interest in the country and brought a flurry of surprising claims. Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI) reported a 43 per cent jump in the number of Australians requiring emergency help in Thailand in the first half of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. Claims for monkey bites, dog bites and even a missed flight caused by six hours of gridlocked traffic were among the most unusual received by SCTI. Despite some unusual circumstances, the vast majority of claims out of Thailand (65 per cent) revolved around medical and evacuation incidents. Gastroenteritis, or gastro, took the top spot making up 28 per cent of SCTI claims in 2025. SCTI revealed the average cost for Australians dealing with the unexpected in Thailand between 2024 and 2025 was $2808. One of the most significant claims was for an 80 year-old woman medically evacuated from Phuket to Perth with severe chest issues. The total cost for the claim was $260,132. 'The variety of these claims underscores the very real need to consider travel insurance ahead of any trip abroad to ensure you're covered for those unexpected events.
