Hawana forum key to strengthening journalism, says UB Sabah chief editor
KOTA KINABALU (June 5): The forum in conjunction with the highlight of the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration on June 14 must serve as a platform for the media industry to uphold and strengthen the institution of journalism amid the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), says Utusan Borneo Sabah Editor-in-Chief Datuk Lichong Angkui.
He said this was crucial to avoid irresponsible parties from manipulating the sophistication of AI in ways that could undermine journalistic values and ethics.
'This special forum should serve as the best platform for all media industry players in the country to unify their voices in elevating the institution of journalism. We must be vigilant of AI manipulation while remaining united in defending journalism.
'The media forum is the best avenue for industry players, stakeholders and interested parties to discuss current trends in the world of journalism and, at the same time, seek solutions to AI manipulation, which is becoming increasingly widespread,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Yesterday, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the theme of Hawana 2025, namely 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics,' and also unveiled the Hawana 2025 logo at Wisma Bernama.
The Hawana 2025 celebration will be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL) from June 13 to 15, with the highlight of the event taking place on June 14, to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Lichong, who is also a governing council member of Ikatan Setiakawan Wartawan Malaysia-Indonesia (Iswami), said technological advancements and the internet had certainly helped the media industry by speeding up the delivery of news and information among organisations traditionally competing to break the news first.
However, he said such competition could potentially lead to widespread dissemination of fake news, especially if AI is manipulated by irresponsible parties, and therefore, vigilance and proactive fact-checking should be strengthened to ensure the authenticity of news and information delivered to the public.
He said it had become common for netizens to share viral news and information without verifying the source or authenticity, which is where the media played a critical role in ensuring every piece of content presented was accurate and trustworthy, thus elevating the integrity of journalism.
Meanwhile, Lichong said the Hawana 2025 theme was appropriate for journalism in the modern era, where AI technology had become essential for the industry.
'This theme clearly emphasises the importance of balancing AI sophistication with journalistic ethics,' he said, adding that responsible and trustworthy journalism was a vital asset in the development of the nation. AI celebration ethics Hawana journalism Lichong Angkui

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil expressed serious concern about netizens accepting social media information without verification. He added authorities confirmed the individual had a known history of scams. Fahmi further noted the Sabah Journalist Association criticised influencers swarming a press conference. These influencers behaved as if they were professional reporters at the event concerning Zara Qairina's death. They asked questions, but their intention was to create content for personal gain, he asserted. Fahmi pointed out that viral views generate significant financial returns for these creators. He lamented that integrity and factual verification were completely ignored in the process. To counter this issue, Fahmi announced a mobilisation of government communication channels. The Information Department, Bernama, and the Broadcasting Department will produce public education content. This initiative aims to help the public understand that not everything on social media is true. On a separate matter, Fahmi addressed the case of five teenagers charged in Kota Kinabalu. He stressed their identities are protected under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001. This is not due to any directive but is required under existing law, Fahmi clarified. Any case involving children under 18 automatically falls under the Child Act, he concluded. Beijing-based Baidu, the operator of China's top search engine, generates a significant proportion of its revenue from online ads, making its performance highly susceptible to fluctuations in the country's spending patterns. The firm achieved revenue of ¥32.7 billion (US$4.56 billion) during the second quarter (Q2) of 2025, down 4% year-on-year, according to a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Revenue from online marketing during the period was down 15% year-on-year to ¥16.2 billion, the statement showed. China is facing an uncertain economic outlook as cautious consumers navigate a years-long downturn in the property market, high unemployment and trade tensions with Washington. Retail sales – a key gauge of consumer demand in China – grew at a slower rate in July than expected, official data showed on Friday. Following years of tight regulation of the vast Chinese tech sector, Beijing is hoping that recent advancements in AI will provide the spark needed to jumpstart the domestic economy. Baidu also said today that its net profit during Q2 was ¥7.3 billion – a 33% jump year-on-year but down 5% from the previous quarter. KPWKM Ready To Provide Input On Proposed Anti-Bullying Tribunal
GENERAL PUTRAJAYA, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) has expressed its readiness to provide input on the proposal to establish a tribunal to address bullying cases involving students and children. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that this was because KPWKM was responsible for the Child Act 2001 and other related legislation. 'The ministry that plays a fairly important role is our ministry (KPWKM). We are just waiting for it to be brought to the Cabinet and will provide input based on what is presented, as we are responsible for the Child Act 2001 and other acts concerning children. 'However, we may have to look at what is relevant to the it falls within the jurisdiction of our ministry (KPWKM), we will work hard on it; (otherwise), it may be under the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU),' she told reporters after the launch of the Wall of Iron Strong programme by Danone Malaysia here today. Nancy said that the proposal to establish the tribunal should be welcomed, adding that KPWKM had always been committed to collaborating with all parties for the welfare and well-being of children. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported to have said today that the proposal to establish a tribunal for bullying cases involving students and children would be brought before a Cabinet meeting. He said that Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said would present the proposal to the Cabinet. Azalina was previously reported as saying that the government was studying the need to enact an Anti-Bullying Act, with emphasis on setting up a tribunal to hear cases involving students and children. She said that discussions at the policy level were crucial, as each relevant ministry, including KPWKM, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Higher Education, and the Ministry of National Unity, had its own views on the enforcement aspects of the act.
