A game-changing new London pub map shows which boozers are currently in the sunshine

Time Out24-04-2025

Everyone Londoner knows the feeling. The clouds part, the sun starts to beam down, the city streets bask in warmth – and you've got a sudden urge to sink an alfresco pint in the sunshine.
Pints in the sun are one of life's simple pleasures, but in a city like London – with its many narrow lanes and ever-growing skyline – finding a pub where you can soak up some rays without being interrupted by shadows is often easier said than done. Well, until now, that is.
A new map has been created, showing which London pubs are in the sunshine at any given time of day. Better yet, not only does the map consider the position of the sun in the sky, but it also takes into account the height of surrounding buildings – thereby telling you which pubs are in a shadow and which ones aren't.
Named Sunseekr, the web app was made by Mo Dawod – an architect by trade – and it was initially made to reveal sunny cafés (now, it has the option to show boozers too). Dawod first unveiled the map on Reddit, explaining that it uses real-time shadow simulation, Mapbox navigation software and data from OpenStreetMap. 'It's a design experiment, a side project, and a bit of summer fun,' Dawod said.
Sunseekr is interactive, letting users explore the city's pubs and cafés in real time, but also helping Londoners to plan ahead: you can set the time you'll be having a pint/coffee, and see where the best spots will be to get some vitamin D. And if you're not feeling the sun? The map also serves to show which establishments are in the shade, if you'd rather stay out of the heat.

Samsung issues important free UK Galaxy upgrade - check your smartphone now

A worrying trend to continues to affect UK smartphone owners but Samsung hopes it latest update will stop it. UK smartphone owners continue to be at risk from a hugely worrying trend that's sweeping across Britain. Phone theft is growing at an alarming rate, with users targeted by thieves who often snatch the device right out of their hands as they walk along the street. It's a lucrative business for criminals, and it's only getting worse. Recent stats from the Met Police have confirmed that over 70,000 Londoners alone had a device snatched last year. That equates to about 192 victims every single day. Along with the financial implication of losing a device, there's also the emotional cost. Our phones are filled with personal data, private photos, banking details and more - losing these can be hugely distressing. ‌ With phone theft now a hot topic, Samsung says it is trying to help by offering several important security features. ‌ Explaining more, the Korean company said: "Samsung is today encouraging smartphone users across the UK to enable and update the latest anti-theft features available on Samsung Galaxy devices." One of the most important things to check - if you own a latest Galaxy device - is Theft Protection. Samsung boasts that this function offers a multi-layered suite of features developed to safeguard personal data, even in high-risk situations such as robbery. Once activated, Theft Protection offers features such as "Theft Detection Lock". This uses machine learning to detect motions associated with theft, such as snatching - if that happens, it automatically locks the screen. "Offline Device Lock" is also included, which automatically locks the screen if the device is disconnected from the network for an extended period, and there's "Remote Lock". This does exactly what it says on the tin, with users able to lock the device even if it's no longer in their possession. And these upgrades aren't the only way to keep things safe. ‌ Samsung has recently confirmed the release of two new security updates, including Identity Check. When in unfamiliar locations, the 'Safe Places' feature requires biometric authentication for any changes to sensitive security settings, adding an additional layer of protection when a PIN may have been compromised. Another bonus is Security Delay. If a robber attempts to reset biometric data, a one-hour delay immediately gets activated before any changes take effect. This crucial buffer gives Samsung customers time to lock the stolen phone from a connected device, such as a PC or tablet, before unauthorised access can occur. 'Our recent One UI 7 update built further on existing protections with new anti-theft features such as identity check, biometric authentication and security delay, all featured in our latest Galaxy S25 series," said Annika Bizon, Mobile Experience (MX) VP of Product and Marketing, UK&I at Samsung "These features have now also been rolled out into a range of models across our devices and further updates will follow. We must do everything we can to ensure the safety and security of our customers when they are using their mobile devices and we will continue to work hard to ensure our customers are aware of the wide range of security features available to them.' So, who can get these features? Samsung has confirmed that these updates are available on the Galaxy S25. They are also becoming available on previous flagship devices, starting with the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold6, Z Flip6, Z Fold5, Z Flip 5, S23 and S22 series currently, with future updates planned for even more Galaxy smartphones.

UK weather: Thunderstorms, ‘frequent lightning & intense rain' to hit TODAY as Met Office issues yellow warning

See the five-day forecast below Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THUNDERSTORMS, gusty winds, heavy rain and "frequent lightning" are set to hit today - with the Met Office issuing a severe weather warning. Parts of Britain will be lashed with up to 40mm of rain in just two hours, according to forecasts. The national weather agency said on X: "A wet day for a few." Forecasters said the weekend will bring frequent heavy showers – some thundery – with a chance of hail and strong winds. The rainfall expected today could be more than England saw during the entire month of May. Met Office data shows England recorded 32.8mm of rain last month – almost half the usual monthly average. It is expected to cause travel chaos, with the forecaster adding there will "probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes". Householders have been warned of potential power cuts. Dan Suri, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: 'Frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected for much of Saturday, before they fade from the west during the mid-to-late afternoon. 'It's possible that 10-15mm of rain could fall in less than an hour, while some places could see 30-40mm of rain over several hours from successive showers and thunderstorms. Scotland blasted by SNOW as summer starts with chilly temperature plunge – but warmer weather is set to return 'Frequent lightning, hail and strong, gusty winds are also possible.' He added: 'While brisk winds ensure that most places in the warning area will be hit by showers, not all places will see thunderstorms. 'In this case it's difficult to predict where exactly thunderstorms will hit because they are small and fast changing. 'One analogy we use to picture the complexity of this forecasting challenge is comparing it to boiling a pan of water and having to guess exactly where and when the bubbles will appear. 'We know some will, but only in certain places, and that is why thunderstorms are so hard to predict.' Where is covered by the weather warning today? East Midlands East of England London & South East England South West England Wales West Midlands Conditions are expected to improve on Sunday, with a drier day forecast for many, though showers may linger in parts of the north and east. The Met Office forecast for tomorrow says: "Sunny spells and scattered showers, these heaviest and most frequent in the north. "Turning cloudier from the northwest later with further showers outbreaks. Breezy for many and feeling rather cool." UK 5-day forecast Today: Widespread showers may be heavy, bringing a risk of hail and thunderstorms across England and Wales. Heavy outbreaks in southern Scotland merge into longer spells of rain at times too. Becoming gusty in passing showers, with occasional sunny spells too. Tonight: Daytime showers largely easing and clearing gradually eastwards, with clear spells developing overnight. Breezy with a few showers arriving in the west by dawn, and feeling cooler than recent nights. Sunday: Sunny spells and scattered showers, these heaviest and most frequent in the north. Turning cloudier from the northwest later with further showers outbreaks. Breezy for many and feeling rather cool. Outlook for Monday to Wednesday: Changeable with a mixture of sunshine, scattered showers and longer spells of rain this week. Breezy and feeling cool at first, but temperatures on the rise by midweek.
