Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova saw opponent Harriet Dart blow two match points on serve before the Czech edged through in Eastbourne on Tuesday.
This year's grass grand slam starts on Monday and Krejcikova was severely tested in her last warm-up tournament.
Following two suspensions of play in the opening set due to wet weather, British number four Dart moved to the brink of one of the greatest wins of her career.
But Krejcikova, who defeated Jasmine Paolini in last year's Wimbledon final, survived a first-round shock by hitting back to progress 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 in two hours and 40 minutes.
The second seed will face another Briton in round two following Jodie Burrage's 6-3, 6-2 win over Japan's Moyuka Uchijima.
Dart did little to hide her frustration at failing to capitalize on the pair of match-clinching opportunities against the 2021 French Open champion, letting out a piercing scream as the following game slipped away.
Another Briton, Emma Raducanu, fought back tears after resuming her Wimbledon preparations by battling back from a set down to beat American Ann Li in the first round.
Amid blustery conditions, the British number one, who missed last week's Berlin Open as she managed a back problem, triumphed 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1.
Raducanu has been struggling with the issue since competing in Strasbourg before the French Open and took an off-court medical timeout during her quarter-final loss at Queen's Club earlier this month.
But, aside from a slip and fall on the grass in set one, she appeared to come through her opening examination at Devonshire Park on the English south coast unscathed.
Victory over world number 64 Li in two hours and 18 minutes sets up a second-round clash with 19-year-old Australian Maya Joint, who knocked out twice Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur on Monday.
Seventh seed Raducanu produced an emotional response after sealing progression with a fine backhand winner.
'It feels incredible. I want to thank the crowd for getting me through some really sticky moments,' the former US Open champion said in her on-court interview.

French Open semi-finalist Boisson out in Wimbledon qualifying

London: French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson has been knocked out in the first round of qualifying for Wimbledon. The 22-year-old enjoyed an incredible run at Roland Garros earlier this month as a wild card, reaching the final four where she was beaten by eventual champion Coco Gauff. Boisson's attention then turned to Wimbledon, but in her opening qualifier on Tuesday she was defeated by Canadian Carson Branstine, who claimed a 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4 victory. The main draw at Wimbledon begins on Monday. (PA Media/DPA)

Tottenham to sign Japan defender Takai from Kawasaki

PA Media/dpa London Tottenham have agreed a deal to sign Japan international defender Kota Takai from J-League side Kawasaki Frontale, the PA news agency understands. The 20-year-old will move to north London in July for a £5 million ($6.8 million) fee and will compete in central defence with Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin. He made his international debut in September in a 7-0 World Cup qualifying win over China having helped his club side to an eighth-place finish domestically last season. He is the club's second signing since Thomas Frank was appointed as head coach in place of Ange Postecoglou earlier in June, after Mathys Tel's six-month loan from Bayern Munich was made permanent. In 2024 he was named Japan's young player of the year having broken into Kawasaki's first team two years previously.

Wimbledon to honour two-time champion Andy Murray with statue

PA Media/dpa London Wimbledon plan to honour Sir Andy Murray with a statue at the All England Club. Murray, the Wimbledon men's singles champion in 2013 and 2016, retired last year and will be involved in designing the sculpture. Wimbledon hope the statue will be revealed in 2027 during the championship's 150th anniversary. 'We are looking to have a statue of Andy Murray here (Wimbledon) and we're working closely with him and his team,' All England club chair Debbie Jevans told the ainslie + ainslie Performance People podcast. 'The ambition is that we would unveil that at the 150th anniversary of our first Championship, which was 1877. 'He's got to rightly be very involved in that and him and his team will be.' Tennis greats John McEnroe and Billie Jean King are among those that have previously called for Murray to be honoured with a statue at Wimbledon. The Scot ended a 77-year wait for a British man to be crowned Wimbledon singles champion and retired after the Paris Olympics last August. Jevans said: 'We had a great celebration for Andy when he played his last (Wimbledon) match, which was on Centre Court. 'All the old players came and they greeted him and Sue Barker interviewed him. 'We looked at Rafa Nadal having that sort of plaque unveiled to him at Roland Garros which was all very special. But we thought, what do we want for Andy?' A bronze statue of Fred Perry, the last British men's champion before Murray, was erected at Wimbledon in 1984 to mark the 50th anniversary of his first singles championship.
