Hear Me Out: ChatGPT is not my friend, but it lends a late-night listening ear
SINGAPORE – It was 2am and I was in bed in tears after what, in hindsight, was a petty fight with my mother. She had reprimanded me for coming home late, and I snapped back, insisting that at 23 years old, I should not have to adhere to curfews.
My friends would have recognised this as an all-too-familiar rant topic. But that night, I didn't reach out to my closest confidantes. I was afraid of burdening them with the same story again. Instead, I did something unexpected: I reinstalled ChatGPT.
I poured out a long, meandering rant into the chat box and hit send. To my surprise, the artificial intelligence (AI) app didn't just offer generic platitudes. It validated my feelings, pointed out patterns I hadn't noticed and gently nudged me towards reflection.
It felt like someone was listening, even if that someone wasn't real.
Later, in conversation with a real friend, I sheepishly confessed what I did. She admitted she had used ChatGPT for emotional support before. So had another. And another.
Apparently, I wasn't alone.
Three years ago, I took a class on AI law. ChatGPT was in its nascent stages, and most discussions about AI felt abstract and far away. We discussed issues of driverless cars, deepfakes and the evolution of AI over the years. Back then, the movie Her (2013), American film-maker Spike Jonze's dystopian love story between man and machine, still felt like a metaphor.
Now, I'm not so sure. While people may not yet be falling in love with their chatbots, they are turning to them for something deeply intimate: comfort.
Even in the recent general election, candidates of some political parties instructed supporters to pull up ChatGPT during rallies to compare manifestos in real time. It was a quick-fire way to seek validation, affirm their arguments and appeal to voters' emotions on the spot.
Let me be clear. I do not endorse the unchecked and frequent use of AI, especially given its environmental toll and ethical concerns. But we can't ignore the growing reality that, for a generation raised on digital immediacy, AI is fast becoming a tool for productivity. But does this apply to the way we process our emotions too?
So, I began to wonder: What does that say about this generation growing up with AI at our fingertips? Do we crave instant validation? Are we avoiding difficult conversations? What does it mean when we talk to a chatbot as if it were a friend, and what does it mean when it talks back like one?
To understand what this shift says about us, and what it might mean for the future of emotional care, I spoke to a few mental health professionals.
Senior clinical psychologist Muhammad Haikal Jamil, founder of ImPossible Psychological Services, has observed a growing trend in Gen Z clients turning to AI tools as the 'first line of support for their emotional struggles'.
The Lighthouse Counselling's principal therapist Belinda Lau adds that AI probably breaks down some barriers, such that people don't need to feel as awkward or embarrassed to share more deeply about how they genuinely feel.
That rings especially true for me. There's a strange relief in being able to send a raw, misspelt rant to a chatbot. One that is unfiltered, unstructured, typed in the heat of emotion.
I don't worry about sounding articulate. I don't feel the need to soften my words or present a balanced view. Even when I know I might be in the wrong, I can still ask for advice without fearing judgment. There's comfort in that kind of emotional anonymity while still receiving validation from the listening party.
But why is this trend of resorting to AI particularly visible among Gen Zs?
Mr Haikal believes it is partly due to growing up in the age of immediacy, which has shaped how younger people deal with distress. However, seeking quick relief may steer them towards unhelpful coping strategies rather than more sustainable, though slower, methods.
While AI tools offer immediate validation, they could fall short in the long run, he warns. '(Users) continue struggling with their emotions if these emotions are intense. They continue to feel empty or alone after communicating with the AI tools. The strategies offered may also be insufficient to alleviate their emotions,' he says.
Still, he sees signs of progress. By expressing ourselves, albeit to a chatbot, it indicates this generation is not only more aware of mental health, but also more willing to be open and vulnerable. 'This is different from the previous generations, where individuals are more likely to detach and push their feelings aside.'
So, maybe it is not the most harrowing thought that, in the wee hours of the night, we turn to a chatbot to vent. Perhaps the simple desire to be heard is what makes us human.
Still, I'll admit nothing quite compares to a real debrief session with my friends. The kind that ends in knowing nods, laughter and hugs, and where I can show them what ChatGPT said, and we sit and evaluate together.
So, robots aren't taking over any time soon. But thank you, ChatGPT, for replying with 'I hear you, that really sucks' whenever times are tough.

Huawei founder waves off US chip curbs while trade talks proceed
BEIJING - Huawei Technologies founder and chief executive Ren Zhengfei dismissed the impact of US export restrictions on China in a front-page People's Daily article, wading into one of the key topics dogging Washington-Beijing trade negotiations. Mr Ren, one of the country's most recognisable business figures, told the Communist Party's official newspaper he wasn't worried about Washington's efforts to cut off the flow of US technology to China's chip sector. Domestic firms could resort to means such as chip packaging or stacking to achieve results similar to that from advanced semiconductor technology. Mr Ren also expressed confidence in the interview that China can make breakthroughs in AI and software, particularly in an increasingly open-source environment. The US has put restrictions on chip design programs for Chinese firms, though Washington could also remove those pending the outcome of talks. The prominently placed article appears timed to coincide with a second day of sensitive negotiations between the US and China, which are seeking to ease tensions over shipments of technology and rare earth elements. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's presence at the talks underscore the importance that export controls are playing in these discussions. Mr Lutnick has said China isn't capable of producing high volumes of sophisticated semiconductors, a sign American export controls are limiting its progress. Semiconductor packaging or stacking refers to the techniques of bundling chips together to make them more powerful - Huawei has been relying on this method to make its most powerful AI chips at Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., aiming to develop silicon as sophisticated as what Nvidia offers. Huawei has in past years evolved from a telecom gear and smartphone maker into one of China's national tech champions, making advances in semiconductors, EVs and AI. It's also one of Washington's biggest targets, given persistent accusations of its ties to Beijing. The company has repeatedly stressed it's an employee-run company. Mr Ren, a former People's Liberation Army officer, has emerged as one of the tech sector's most prominent voices since the first Trump administration added the company to the so-called Entity List. That move significantly curtailed Huawei's access to US technologies, initially walloped the business and sped its exit from several major markets. But Huawei has since regained market share in smartphones, developed a more advanced process than the US thought possible, and is now making inroads into the AI and EV software markets. In May, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that Chinese AI rivals are filling the void left by the departure of US companies from that market, and their technology is becoming more powerful. Apple plays it safe on AI despite Wall Street pressure

PHOTO: REUTERS CUPERTINO, United States - Apple on June 9 remained on its cautious path to embracing generative artificial intelligence (AI) even as rivals race ahead with the technology and Wall Street expresses doubts over its strategy. The pressure was on Apple not to disappoint at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) a year after the iPhone juggernaut made a promise it failed to keep – to improve its Siri voice assistant with generative AI. The annual WWDC is addressed to developers who build apps and tools to run on the company's products. Despite 2024's disappointment, Apple insisted on June 9 that it was still very much in the AI race, announcing incremental updates to its Apple Intelligence software, including the ability for app makers to directly access a device's AI capabilities. This would allow users to engage with apps using generative AI while offline, letting them interact ChatGPT-style with a hiking app, for example, while in remote areas without a connection. Apple CEO Tim Cook briefly mentioned that Siri's AI makeover was still under development and 'needed more time to meet our high quality bar,' which includes Apple's standards on privacy and data security. 'We are making progress, and we look forward to getting these features into customers' hands,' he added. For Mr Gadjo Sevilla, senior analyst for Emarketer, 'the delays to Apple's in-house AI efforts will continue to draw scrutiny'. 'Especially since rivals like Google and Samsung are moving ahead by introducing new on-device AI capabilities, or partnering with AI startups like Perplexity, (in Samsung's case) to provide users with AI features,' he added. The biggest announcement at the event was the renaming of Apple's operating systems so that releases better match their release year. The next operating system will be iOS 26 and will be available across all of Apple's devices – including the Mac, Watch and Vision Pro headset – in the fall, in time for the likely release of the next iPhone 17. Today, Apple's operating systems have vastly different nomenclatures across devices, including the current iOS 18 for the iPhone or macOS 15 for Mac computers. Apple also announced that the new operating system will be the first major iOS redesign since 2013, calling the new look 'liquid glass'. Wall Street divided The relationship between Apple and app-making developers has been strained in recent years, with developers chafing at the iPhone maker's high fees for getting access to the App Store. A marathon lawsuit by Fortnite maker Epic Games ended with Apple being ordered to allow outside payment systems to be used in the US App Store. Adding to doubts about Apple's direction is the fact that the legendary designer behind the iPhone, Mr Jony Ive, has joined with ChatGPT maker OpenAI to create a potential rival device for engaging with AI. Apple also has to deal with tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump in his trade war with China, a key market for sales growth and the place where most iPhones are manufactured. Mr Trump has also threatened to hit Apple with tariffs if iPhone production wasn't moved to the US, a change which analysts say would be impossible given the costs and capabilities required. Wall Street analysts remain divided on Apple's prospects, with the stock down about 17 percent since the start of the year, wiping over US$600 billion (S$771 billion) from its market value and far outshone by its Big Tech rivals. While some analysts remain optimistic about Apple's long-term AI monetisation potential, others worry the company's cautious approach may prove costly in the longer term. WWDC 'was void of any major Apple Intelligence progress as Cupertino is playing it safe and close to the vest after the missteps in 2024,' said Mr Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities. 'We have a high level of confidence Apple can get this right, but they have a tight window to figure this out,' he added. Paramount Global's Naveen Chopra joins Roblox as finance head
Paramount Global's finance head Naveen Chopra will leave to take on a similar role at video gaming firm Roblox, the companies said on Monday. The move comes as Paramount is seeking to close its $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media, which is pending approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Andrew Warren, currently Paramount's strategic advisor to the office of the CEO, will take over as interim CFO, the company said. Chopra succeeds Michael Guthrie at Roblox, which is experiencing increased engagement on its platform from its vast Gen Z user base. Guthrie announced last year that he would be stepping down as CFO to pursue personal interests.
