3 Nepalese detained in Hojai for posing as eye doctors
According to police, the three persons were taken from a day-long health camp to Hojai police station for questioning on Tuesday. Their names have not yet been disclosed. They were served legal notices and later released on a PR bond, officials said.
This marks the fourth operation by the cell resulting in the detention of seven individuals so far this year.
The action was initiated after the cell of the Assam Council of Medical Registration lodged a complaint regarding the alleged fraudulent practitioners.
Police visited the health camp to verify their credentials and qualifications.
Anti-quackery & vigilance officer of the Assam govt, Dr Abhijit Neog, wrote on social media, "The fledgling Anti Quackery & Vigilance Cell of the Assam Council of Medical Registration has been successful in its drive against quackery with the detention of three persons claiming to be Ophthalmologists (which they were not), from Mechi Eye & Aesthetic Hospital, Nepal, when they were conducting an Eye Treatment Camp at Hojai.

Neog said of the three detainees — all in their 20s — one was an optometrist, another an ophthalmic assistant, and the third an assistant without any medical qualification. Sources said the optometrist had studied at a private university in Guwahati.
He said the camp's advertisement had falsely claimed that renowned ophthalmologists from Nepal would conduct the treatments, yet none of the detained individuals were qualified doctors.
"This was a case of cheating, as people were led to believe that eminent ophthalmologists from Nepal would treat them, but none were actually present. It constitutes a criminal breach of trust," Neog added.
Prior to the Hojai camp, the same people had reportedly organised two similar camps in Guwahati on Monday. Authorities are now investigating whether they had proper authorisation to conduct eye check-ups and treatments.
"We had been tracking them for some time," Neog said.
Hojai SP, Saurabh Gupta, said, "They are not doctors and have been served a legal notice to respond." The complaint report has been sent to the court.
Police said it is a non-cognisable offense. If court orders an investigation, the trio will be summoned and will have to answer before court.
Neog said such fraudulent activities have been prevalent in areas like Barpeta Road, Nagaon, and Guwahati (Gita Mandir & Silpukhuri) over the past few years, exploiting public trust in Nepal's reputed eye care services.

Two class 12 dropouts held for cyber frauds using fake bank sites, apps
1 2 Lucknow: Lucknow Commissionerate Police, in collaboration with the Cyber Crime Cell, unearthed an inter-state racket involving two class 11 dropouts using fake websites and apps of bank portals to defraud credit card holders of lakhs of rupees. The accused, Rahul Lakheda (28) and Vikas Kumar (28), both residents of Delhi's Badarpur area, were arrested from a rented house in Capital's Om Nagar on Aug 6. Additional DCP, South zone, Vasanth Kumar, said that the duo commissioned fake websites and Android Package Kit (APKs) that closely resembled those of legitimate banks and credit card issuers. "While pretending to be customer care executives from well-known banks, the accused would randomly cold-call individuals. During these calls, they would offer lucrative services such as instant credit card limit enhancement, free or bonus insurance activation, urgent account verification, or card closure assistance," said Kumar. Once the victim was convinced, they were sent a link via SMS or WhatsApp, typically in the form of APK files. These apps mimicked the interface of legitimate banking portals. Victims were instructed to download the app and enter personal data related to credit cards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Was Everyone's Dream Girl In 90's, This Is Her Now The Latest Article Undo Once the victim entered the data, the fraudsters gained access to their card. They would immediately initiate online purchases, mostly of mobile phones or electronics. To complete the transactions, they would trick the victim into sharing the One Time Password (OTP) sent by the bank—usually under the pretext of "final verification." The purchased phones were delivered to locations accessible by the gang. Once received, the devices were sold in Delhi's grey markets at slightly discounted rates—but with bills, making them harder to trace. This gave the racket a clean way to convert stolen digital funds into liquid cash. The gang repeated this con across various cities. The bust began with a complaint lodged by Jitendra Kumar, a resident of Lucknow's Sarojininagar area, on June 24. He reported that an unknown caller tricked him into sharing his PAN card number and OTP under the pretext of closing his credit card. A total of Rs 1,60,432 was stolen from his card via purchases made on Flipkart. An FIR was registered and the cyber cell used technical surveillance, call detail analysis and digital footprints to trace the accused to Delhi. Cops seized 25 mobile phones of various brands, 24 active SIM cards from different providers, one laptop, two routers, a printer, and Rs 41,250 in cash. ED files charge sheet against min in SSC case
1 2 Kolkata: ED has filed a charge sheet against Bengal minister Chandranath Sinha as part of its probe into the SSC jobs-for-cash case. Sinha is the 55th accused in the case. The charge sheet was filed on Wednesday at the special PMLA court. It mentions that Sinha allegedly had a role in a nexus that involved taking money from school jobs aspirants, according to the ED. Following the filing of the charge sheet, Sinha rushed to the CGO Complex office of the agency on Thursday morning to meet officials. Sources close to Sinha said none of the officials met him. The central investigating agency had asked Sinha to appear before it last month. But Sinha evaded the appearance, citing his preoccupation with political matters. Sinha's name surfaced in the case after both Kuntal Ghosh and Tapas Mandal spoke about him. Ghosh and Mandal, two allegedly key persons in the nexus are said to have mentioned Sinha's name in their statements. Birbhum came under the radar of investigators after they unearthed an alleged network run by Trinamool MLA Jiban Krishna Saha. ED officials questioned a number of B Ed and DL Ed college representatives from Bolpur in connection to the case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee Pain Keeping You Up at Night? During the raid, agency officials also seized Rs 41 lakh from his residence. Sinha claimed that some amount of money is always kept at home. However, he could not justify the source of the whole sum of money. Two of his mobile phones were seized by officials. Later, when they summoned Sinha to the agency's CGO Complex office in Salt Lake, he failed to appear before them. He, instead, sent his lawyer. ED officials alleged they had found certain discrepancies in his statements and needed clarification. Sources close to Sinha said that he is looking at legal options after the agency filed the charge sheet. Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "A charge sheet is not gospel truth. ED charge sheets very often falter in courts. On the specific case, the minister and his legal advisors are in a better position to respond to what ED says."
