Klaasen's SA retirement should ring alarm bells in international cricket
MUMBAI: Apart from India, one of the main attractions of the 2023 ICC World Cup was South Africa in the league stage of the competition. If it was India's pace bowling, South Africa's batting captured the imagination of fans.
In a series of dazzling performances, the Proteas' batters entertained the Indian crowd with their power-hitting. Along with top-order batters Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen, there was the explosive Heinrich Klaasen to boost the middle-order.
After starting the tournament with 428/5 in 50 overs against Sri Lanka, they lit up the event with 300-plus totals six times in 10 games in the run-up to the semi-final.
When the bounce is true, there is no better sight than Klaasen in full flow. During the tournament, the pitches at the Wankhede Stadium helped bring the out the best in him as he smashed a 67-ball 109 (vs England) and a 49-ball 90 (vs Bangladesh) in back-to-back matches.
Again, in the 2024 T20 World Cup, he was South Africa's impact player. He almost took the final away from India with a belligerent 27-ball 52.
On Monday, the 33-year-old Klaasen announced a shock retirement from international cricket, the latest in a growing list of top all-format players seeking to concentrate on professional T20 leagues around the world.
One of the game's most fearsome hitters, he is one of the most sought-after players on the T20 franchise circuit. Apart from the Indian Premier League (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Klaasen is signed up for the Major League Cricket (for Seattle Orcas) and The Hundred (Manchester Originals).
'It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket,' Klassen, who played four Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is, said in a statement. 'It took me a long time to decide what's best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with.
'To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career. I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so.'
With a host of professional T20 leagues across continents paying big money, it's become a trend for top players to give them preference over international cricket. Due to a packed schedule, the clash of fixtures between T20 Leagues and bilateral series has players in a fix.
Last season, South Africa faced an embarrassing situation when they were forced to take a Test squad without most frontline players to New Zealand because of a clash with SA20. There is a clash of schedules this season as well. South Africa play two Tests and a T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe in July and three T20Is and ODIs each in Australia and England in August and September. Those series, however, clash with MLC, The Hundred and the Caribbean Premier League.
Klaasen is following in the footsteps of fellow South African Quinton de Kock. The dashing left-handed opener was the star of the 2023 ODI and 2024 T20 World Cups. De Kock had won over Indian fans in the 2023 World Cup by smashing four centuries. De Kock though chose to retire from ODIs after the tournament. In late 2021, he had announced a shock retirement from Tests. He has not played T20Is either after last year's World Cup final.
Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi have also opted out of central contracts but remain available for South Africa. After Australia, India and England, South Africa continues to produce exciting cricket talent. The latest example is Dewald Brevis, 22, who played for Chennai Super Kings this IPL season and is in big demand among franchises. It is seen in the results. SA play the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's this month, after finishing runners-up in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Players making a beeline to T20 leagues by ditching national teams should worry the International Cricket Council. West Indies and New Zealand players have also prioritised franchise cricket over internationals.
In fact, New Zealand's premier batter Kane Williamson last year rejected a central contract. New Zealand's all-time leading Test run-scorer said he wanted to play for his country but wished to 'pursue an overseas opportunity' during the home summer. Left-arm pacer Trent Boult was among the first Kiwi players to opt out of a central contract.
Missing such high-profile cricketers will affect the quality of international competitions as national squads get depleted. The concern is that soon the franchise teams will look stronger than most national outfits.

India's young side fails to clear Thailand hurdle
Back in 2019, when Stephen Constantine was the national football coach, India beat Thailand 4-0 at the AFC Asian Cup. Seven games into his tenure, coach Manolo Marquez chose a young Indian team for a friendly against Thailand on Wednesday, ahead of the country's attempt to return back to that very competition. Despite a crucial Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong on the road looming, and a lengthy domestic camp behind them, India conceded a two-goal loss on the road. Defensively too, going with Asish Rai, Anwar Ali and Abhishek Tekcham meant that India wanted pace in their backline, after their previous game against Bangladesh. But Thailand and Ben Davis had other plans. India, never really comfortable playing through the midfield, started to do just so, but were getting caught out early under Thailand's pressure. Davies opened the scoring for the home team in the eighth minute, converting a half volley right on the edge of the Indian box after a sideways pass from Korawich Tasa found him with space. India were caught slightly unawares, with a player down in the box and the Thai's choosing to continue playing. As the first half continued, India's influence in the midfield grew – but it coincided with a drop in Thailand's energy in chasing the ball. But even with that influence, came the poor decision-making in the final third, that has been the hallmark of this team. It would either be a half-hearted cross into the box to Chhetri, a player who is usually surrounded by taller centre-backs, or it would be a long shot from outside the box – attempts that came from Liston Colaco and Ashique. There would be the occasional chance – Colaco's run through the wing and then a slider into Chhetri should have come up with some dividends, but the Indian skipper got caught in the box amid too many bodies and couldn't connect with the ball well enough. Tekcham took a shot from way outside the box with his right foot that whizzed past the post. But as the half dwindled, India continued to be a goal down. That disadvantage doubled itself when Thailand scored in the 59th minute again. A few minutes earlier Chhetri had been denied a penalty and right as it seemed the away team was going to snake a goal in, Arjivirai came up with a moment of brilliance. Sliding in from the left, the Thai striker used his marker to curl a right-footed shot into Vishal Kaith's goal – a shot that curved first, dipped later and then touched the underside of the crossbar before going into goal. Two goals up and a game against Turkmenistan on the horizon, Thailand took their foot off the pedal. It led to India's strongest period in the game, and a few chances followed. But Lallianzuala Changte wasn't able to convert the simplest of one-on-ones against the Thai custodian when he was sent through on goal in the 79th minute and that missed opportunity was summed up. Marquez's team next face Hong Kong on the road, a crucial game where the Indian team needs to pick up a win to get their Asian Cup qualification on track.

Bengaluru stampede: CM Siddaramiah, PM Modi, RCB, BCCI express grief
Eleven individuals lost their lives and 33 were injured in a stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a large crowd had gathered to see the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team following its first Indian Premier League (IPL) title win. According to reports, thousands had assembled outside the stadium, and police attempted to manage the situation. Force was used as crowds surged against the entrance gates. Eyewitnesses stated that fans arrived in large numbers at the felicitation venue. Visuals showed police personnel moving the injured and unconscious to nearby hospitals using ambulances. An RCB fan outside the stadium said, "I don't know what we did had tickets." Another, Prashant Shetty, said, "We came to watch our stars. I bought tickets for the function but was not even able to enter the stadium. Police suddenly blocked all the roads and closed all the entrances to the venue, and suddenly they started lathi-charging near the main gate." RCB extends condolences to the affected families, ''We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team's arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe.'' IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said, "We spoke to the management when we got to know about the situation and they assured that they will finish the ceremony quickly. This is definitely sad and tragic. Saikia added, "When one organises a victory celebration of this and security measures need to be taken." BCCI vice-president and Congress MP Rajeev Shukla said, "This can happen in any state, and the ruling party should not be blamed for it. It should not be politicised. If this happens in a BJP-ruled state, we should not blame them. The crowd was huge. I spoke to the franchise, and they also did not think that such a huge crowd would come, and this incident happened suddenly. Efforts are being made to provide maximum help to the families of the deceased." PM condones the incident Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences in a post shared by the Prime Minister's Office on X: "The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery." Karnataka CM expresses grief Chief Minister Siddaramaiah posted, "Deeply shocked by the tragic loss of lives in the stampede during the RCB victory celebrations near Chinnaswamy Stadium. A moment of joy has been eclipsed by sorrow. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. Precautionary measures were taken by not allowing a victory parade, but the crowd surge near the stadium led to this tragedy. I urge everyone to always prioritise safety — above excitement, celebration, or crowd fervour." Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge posted, "I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede in Bengaluru during the celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 victory. The loss of precious lives and the injuries sustained by many in this unfortunate incident are profoundly distressing. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost loved ones, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured." Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on X: "My condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Wishing a swift and full recovery to all those injured. In this hour of grief, I stand with the people of Bengaluru. The Karnataka government must provide all possible support and relief to the affected families. This tragedy is a painful reminder: no celebration is worth a human life. Every safety protocol for public events must be reviewed and strictly enforced -- lives must always come first." Senior Congress leader BK Hariprasad said, "The incident in which more than 11 people, including women, died in a stampede during the RCB cricket team's victory parade in Bengaluru is extremely shocking and regrettable. The condition of some of the injured in the stampede is serious, and the government should take immediate action to provide them with appropriate treatment." Opposition slams state govt The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the Congress-led government in Karnataka, demanding that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G Parameshwara accept responsibility for the incident. Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy said on X: "It is extremely painful to see innocent lives lost even before the celebrations could begin. The primary reason for this massive tragedy is the lack of proper planning and complete failure to take precautionary measures. The state government, led by @INCKarnataka, must take full responsibility for this disaster."
