Russia's biggest carmaker is eyeing a 4-day workweek because sales are doing so poorly

Yahoo4 days ago
Avtovaz, the maker of the Lada, is thinking of switching to a four-day workweek amid poor sales.
It accused foreign car firms of "price dumping," and projected earlier that 2025 sales would fall 25%.
But Russians are also buying fewer cars overall, down 27.6% in June year-on-year.
Avtovaz, the firm that manufactures Russia's best-selling car brand, said on Tuesday that it may shift to a four-day workweek amid forecasts of plummeting sales for this year.
The state-owned automaker told Russian state media it was fighting multiple headwinds, including Chinese car brands surging into the local market.
So it's considering introducing the downsized workweek in the fall, starting on September 29.
"At the same time, the company emphasizes that the final decision on the introduction of a partial four-day workweek will be made based on the results of an analysis of market trends and economic factors, including the level of the key rate and the availability of credit products," Avtovaz said in a statement to Russian media.
The firm makes the Lada, the Soviet Union's most widely produced family of cars, and a symbol of Russia's Cold War era. The Lada continues to be the most common car in the country.
Avtovaz has previously reduced factory work days. It last introduced a temporary four-day workweek for three months in 2022, as the onset of the Ukraine war prompted foreign industries to leave Russia.
Now, it's telling state media that its sales were hit hard by tightening car loan rules and high interest rates — debt-averse measures that Moscow imposed amid the West's sanctions.
China's cars hit Lada hard
But this time, the company also blamed the heavy import of foreign cars in 2024. With almost all international car brands ceasing official sales in Russia after the Ukraine war began, foreign sales there are dominated by Chinese automakers.
Chinese car brands sold over 1 million vehicles in Russia in 2024, a sevenfold increase from the previous year.
In its statement, Avtovaz accused imported brands of "pursuing a policy of price dumping," saying that these rivals' warehouses hold over 400,000 unsold cars.
And the Russian carmaker thinks its revenues will continue to suffer. Avotvaz said last month that it expected its car sales to drop 25% to 1.1 million vehicles in 2025 compared to last year.
That's amid an overall drop in car sales across Russia. The local auto analysis firm Autostat said on July 4 that 90,116 new passenger cars were sold in June, down 27.6% from the same month last year.
Despite its challenges, Avtovaz holds the largest share in the domestic market, selling just over a quarter of those cars in June.
Avtovaz and Solaris, a new local car company that operates an old Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg, are the only two Russian companies in the country's top 10 passenger car firms by sales.
Another seven of the top 10 are Chinese firms, while one is Belarusian.

Russia-backed Nayara taps Indian IT firm after Microsoft suspends service, sources say

By Nidhi Verma NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Russia-backed Indian refiner Nayara Energy, recently sanctioned by the European Union, has turned to domestic firm after the U.S. tech giant Microsoft suspended IT services, three sources familiar with the matter said. Nayara, which has condemned the sanctions, said on Monday it had filed a case against Microsoft in the Delhi High Court over its withdrawal of services. Nayara, a major buyer of Russian oil that is 49% owned by Russian oil major Rosneft, has struggled with disruptions since coming under European Union sanctions this month targeting Russia over its war in Ukraine, including trimming refinery runs. Sources told Reuters that since last Tuesday, Microsoft had halted services for Nayara, and that employees' Outlook email and Teams messaging accounts had not been working. The service can facilitate communications among Nayara employees but cannot retrieve data and previous emails stored on Microsoft's cloud, sources said. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to media. Nayara and Rediff did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Mumbai-based Rediff offers online consumer services and also provides cloud-based email services for businesses. Aeva strikes lidar chip-making deal with LG subsidiary

LG Innotek, the components and materials subsidiary of South Korea's LG Group, has struck a manufacturing partnership with Aeva Technologies, which makes 4D LiDAR sensing systems. The partnership will see LG Innotek manufacturing and supplying Aeva's Atlas Ultra 4D LiDAR sensor for automobiles, and eventually expanding the technology for use in consumer electronics, robotics and industrial automation. As part of the deal, LG Innotek will invest up to $50 million in Aeva, acquiring an equity stake of about 6% in the U.S. company. 'The first part of the partnership is focused on the automotive sector,' Aeva's co-founder and CEO Soroush Salehian told TechCrunch. 'LG Innotek will act as our manufacturing partner for some of the top 10 global passenger vehicle OEMs.' Founded in 2017, Aeva says it has poured nearly half-a-billion dollars into developing what it calls '4D LiDAR on a chip.' Unlike conventional LiDAR systems that rely on time-of-flight measurements to estimate distance, Aeva's Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave-based perception technology measures both distance and velocity for every pixel in real time, Salehian said. 'It's like going from black-and-white to color camera. We get this velocity information as a new dimension,' he explained. Aeva says it has integrated the entire LIDAR system, including optics, into a silicon photonics module. This miniaturized, chip-scale design enables more efficient production and integration, particularly for scaling in markets such as automotive, robotics, and consumer electronics, Salehian said. The company plans to put the capital from the deal towards product development and augmenting its team. 'Over the past eight years, we've made [the hardware] super small, and we're sticking to that trajectory. We're going to make it down to a monolithic, single-chip,' Salehian said. Volkswagen Delays Launching Cupra Brand in America

The Volkswagen Group had set its sights on bringing Cupra to the United States by the end of the decade. However, the plan announced about a year ago is no longer in place, as the Spanish automaker has 'strategically decided to postpone' its entry into the U.S. until after 2030. Why? It cites 'ongoing challenges within the automotive industry and in light of evolving market dynamics.' The vague statement doesn't mention tariffs , but the volatile situation in the U.S. likely played a role in the VW Group's decision to delay launching the Cupra brand. Originally, the company had intended to bring an electric Formentor to America, along with a larger electric SUV. But not all vehicles were supposed to be EVs. Former SEAT and Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths told us late last year that hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and pure gas cars were also part of the plan. The strategy included opening 20 so-called Cupra City Garages with the help of Penske across the country, targeting the East and West Coasts as well as Sun Belt states. Rather than replicating its European lineup, Cupra aimed for a U.S.-specific portfolio, including a locally built vehicle. The models were expected to be larger and feature a distinct design language tailored to American tastes. The medium-term goal was to sell 100,000 units annually. Cupra emphasizes that it's only delaying the launch, not canceling it: 'We're not stopping, just postponing our U.S. launch and will continue to monitor market developments in the coming years to determine the best timing and approach, aligned with the brand's long-term vision,' said Sven Schuwirth, Executive Vice-President for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales at SEAT . Meanwhile, Cupra had its best first half of the year to date, delivering 167,600 units, up 33.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Since being spun off from SEAT in 2018, the brand has sold more than 900,000 vehicles and expects to reach the one-million milestone in the coming months. Cupra is now outselling SEAT, which suffered a 21.4 percent decline to 135,000 units, or 32,600 fewer cars than the younger brand. Cupra's announcement follows a similar decision by Renault, which had planned to bring its Alpine sub-brand to the U.S. by 2027 . During a recent earnings call, Renault CFO and interim CEO Duncan Minto attributed the delay to ongoing uncertainty in the American market: 'Considering what's going on in the U.S. at the moment, I don't think it's the right time to spend money.'
