WHOOP 5.0: The best screenless fitness tracker just got a successor

WHOOP
TL;DR WHOOP has launched a new generation of bands, the WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP Medical Grade (MG).
The devices introduce upgraded health features, ECG support, blood pressure monitoring, and more.
The company also introduced a new tiered pricing structure for its membership, starting at $199 annually.
Two years after releasing the WHOOP 4.0, the performance brand is back with two more screen-free fitness trackers: the WHOOP 5.0 and the all-new WHOOP Medical Grade (MG). The brand's current generation is already a popular pick among athletes and health enthusiasts who don't want a distracting display on their wellness trackers, and the latest models bring upgraded health features and hardware refinements for even deeper health insights.
WHOOP
On the hardware side, both the new WHOOP models land 7% smaller than the previous generation. Despite their slimmer form factors, they pack in upgraded sensors and more efficient processors that promise to collect data more frequently without taking a toll on the battery life.
In fact, battery life has actually improved, with both new WHOOP trackers offering more than 14 days of use between charges. Paired with the new wireless PowerPack, the WHOOP 5.0 can last a full month on the wrist. Meanwhile, WHOOP has also introduced refreshed accessories, including new leather bands for a more polished look. The devices can also still be worn in alternative spots around the body with compatible accessories.
WHOOP
The most meaningful upgrades, however, are under the hood. New to the bands is Healthspan with WHOOP Age, a feature that estimates users' physiological age using nine health markers, ranging from resting heart rate to tracked sleep quality. The tool is part of WHOOP's broader push toward long-term health tracking.
In that vein, the company also introduced an FDA-approved ECG feature appropriately dubbed Heart Screener. It provides on-demand readings from the wrist and sends results directly to users' healthcare providers, detecting signs of atrial fibrillation and providing irregular heart rhythm notifications. As with similar features on other wearables, it's limited to users over 22 and not recommended for people with pacemakers or other implanted devices. The medical-grade feature is also exclusive to the WHOOP MG.
WHOOP
The latest WHOOP bands also roll out with Blood Pressure Insights, which estimates systolic and diastolic pressure without a dedicated cuff. Other updates include improved sleep tracking, expanded fitness tracking metrics, and Women's Hormonal Insights. This last female-focused feature delivers personalized insights into how users' hormonal changes impact sleep, stress, and recovery through each stage of life. WHOOP is also teasing Advanced Labs, a forthcoming feature that will integrate clinical blood test results directly into the app.
New membership plans
WHOOP didn't stop at hardware or feature updates; the company also introduced a new tiered membership structure. The base level, WHOOP One, starts at $199 per year and covers core tracking features. WHOOP Peak, at $239 per year, adds more advanced insights, and WHOOP Life, priced at $359 per year, unlocks the full suite of features, including detailed health reports and premium support.
This menu of membership options represents a notable shift from the singular price model of the past. However, the memberships are still rather pricey and won't be a fit for those who prefer a one-time purchase. For interested shoppers, the WHOOP 5.0 and WHOOP MG are available now at whoop.com, along with updated accessories and membership plans.

The Whoop MG Tells You How Fast You're Aging

In a sea of nearly identical fitness trackers, Whoop stands apart. Since it started in 2012, the company has understood that the hardware was secondary to software. For a pricey monthly membership, you get access to a (theoretically) never-ending series of new features in the Whoop app, and the company throws in the small, screenless sensor for free. This was once a pretty good bargain, but for the past several years, Whoop hasn't done much. In 2023, the company released its OpenAI-powered personalized fitness service, Whoop Coach. As with most other AI-enabled fitness services, you had to think really hard about how to frame your questions to get useful advice. I didn't find it particularly helpful. This year, the company finally released an updated Whoop that comes with a bevy of new features that make it a much more versatile tracker for people who don't post their gains every day. Most notably, it has a proprietary algorithm for blood pressure tracking. I've been testing the new Whoop MG for a few weeks now, and it reminded me why people like this tracker so much. Screen-Free Solution Photograph: Adrienne So If you're not familiar with a Whoop tracker, it's a small wearable with photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors to measure heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV); accelerometers to measure movement, strain, and activity; and skin temperature sensors to capture variations during sleep or recovery. The new Whoop units are smaller and purportedly more power-efficient than the last one, although I'm not getting anywhere near the claimed 14-plus days of battery life. In 21 days, I've had to charge it twice. It doesn't have onboard GPS. It's not super-annoying, given that, you know, it doesn't even have a screen, so I'm not exactly using the Whoop to clock my pace on a run. But you do have to use GPS on your phone to unlock certain features within the Whoop app, like a more accurate VO 2 max. (Just toggle 'Track Route' in the app when starting to log a run.) You can also insert the Whoop into Whoop Body garments. Whoop sent the new MG training bra ($59) and training shorts ($54), which captured my data while I was running and rowing, but if you're a returning Whoop customer, you do need the new Whoop Body clothes because the MG is smaller than the last iteration, the Whoop 4.0. It's also important to note that Whoop changed its membership structure. You used to pay a blanket $30 per month membership fee for everything Whoop had to offer, but now features are paywalled behind a tiered subscription plan. Whoop One ($199/year) gets you the regular Whoop 5.0, which is the upgrade from the Whoop 4.0, Whoop Coach, and sleep, strain, and recovery tracking. Whoop Peak ($239/year) gets you the Whoop 5.0 with the new Healthspan and Pace of Aging features, and Whoop Life ($359/year) gets you the new Whoop MG, which unlocks the new cardiac features like ECGs, heart screeners, blood pressure monitoring, and AFib detection.

Exercising within 4 hours of bedtime is messing with your sleep

Sweat dreams? While trying to get ripped is an admirable goal, new research reveals that doing it at night might just be muscling into your REM cycle. High-intensity workouts four hours or less before bed were linked to poorer sleep quality, later bedtimes and a higher resting heart rate. 3 While you may know that working out right before bed isn't good for you, this is the first and most extensive study to understand why. Pormezz – They were also associated with lower heart rate variability, meaning less variation in the time between heartbeats, which is generally a sign of stress or poor recovery. All of the markers indicate strenuous exercise that close to lights out puts the body into a heightened state of alertness, hindering the transition to restful sleep. Strenuous exercise is defined as activities that require a lot of physical effort — typically elevating the heart rate to 70% to 85% of maximum capacity — such as biking uphill, engaging in HIIT or playing sports. While experts have generally agreed that working out right before bed isn't good for you, this is the first and most extensive study to illuminate why. 3 This graphic from the study shows actual exercise timing and strain associations with sleep and nocturnal autonomic activity. Nature Communications (2025) 'Intense exercise in the evening can keep the body in a heightened state of alertness, which is why public health guidelines have previously advised against working out too close to bedtime,' lead author Dr. Josh Leota, a research fellow in the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, said in a statement. 'However, findings from controlled laboratory studies are less conclusive, with many suggesting that evening exercise doesn't necessarily disrupt sleep.' These studies relied on small sample sizes and laboratory settings, Leota said, and rarely involved exercise that made substantial cardiometabolic demands on the body. For his research, Leota and his team analyzed data from 14,689 people over the course of one year, which translated to a whopping 4 million nights of information. Participants wore a health-tracking wristband called WHOOP to monitor their sleep, exercise and heart health. The findings were adjusted for factors such as gender, age and general fitness level, lending further credibility to the study's conclusions. 3 The study found that doing high-intensity workouts four hours or less before bed led to poorer sleep quality, later bedtimes and a higher resting heart rate. oneinchpunch – The results were published recently in the journal Nature Communications. Studies indicate that exercising in general is good for sleep, with some researchers reporting that short, light workouts before bed can help you sleep longer, lower blood sugar levels and potentially live longer. So, if you do find yourself wanting to work out a couple of hours before bed, Leota suggests choosing 'brief low-intensity exercises, such as a light jog or swim, to minimize sleep disruption and allow the body to wind down.' Or, for added gut health benefits — just take a fart walk.
