Ranking the 10 toughest Big Ten or SEC football schedules for the 2025 season
Less than 12 weeks remain before the 2025 college football season kicks off. In what has become an annual tradition, this build-up period is being spent arguing which conference deserves the crown as the sport's best. Or, if the SEC is still No. 1, whether the Big Ten is now narrowing the gap.
These discussions aren't only held between fans and analysts. Current Illinois and former Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema even joined the mix, arguing that the last 2-3 years of NIL and the transfer portal balancing rosters have brought the Big Ten up to the SEC's top level. While there is no definitive answer to that argument, the Big Ten did dominate the 2024 college football postseason, including a national title and numerous head-to-head wins over SEC opponents.
The SEC's common retort to that argument is an outline of its conference schedule for 2025, with 14 of its 16 member teams ranked within ESPN SP+'s top 50 entering the year.
While that piece of evidence matters, it discounts what Big Ten programs, primarily Wisconsin, face in 2025. The Badgers not only have by far the toughest schedule in the Big Ten, but their schedule is tougher than nearly every SEC slate.
As a reminder, we utilize Connelly's initial SP+ rankings to evaluate the difficulty of every schedule. Here is our methodology:
The equation used to compare each slate is simple. First, we take each team's SP+ rating to find a numerical value for every game. The higher that number, the tougher the matchup. We then add every opponent's SP+ rating together to find a total opponent score. That large number is divided by the number 12 (total games) to find the average opponent score — a number that can then be compared to the SP+ leaderboard to find, on average, what a team will face each week.
(Note: Home and away is not factored into the model. Also, Football Championship Subdivision opponents are not listed in SP+. Every FCS opponent was assessed a "minus-15' rating, akin to the No. 120 team in the Football Bowl Subdivision)
For specifics, here is where Wisconsin's slate ranks among the top 10 Big Ten or SEC schedules for 2025, ranked from easiest to toughest.

LSU football: Predicting Harold Perkins' stats for the 2025 season

LSU football defender Harold Perkins is back for year four. The five-star recruit was a star as a true freshman in 2022, racking up 41 pressures and 10 sacks. Most of Perkins' snaps in 2022 came as an edge rusher. In 2023, LSU moved Perkins to a traditional inside linebacker role. The results were mixed. Perkins couldn't make the same impact rushing the passer and was inconsistent vs. the run. Perkins improved as the year progressed, especially in pass coverage. In 2024, LSU kept Perkins in an off-ball linebacker role but with added versatility. Still, Perkins wasn't making the same impact he did as a freshman and in week four vs. UCLA, he tore his ACL and was out for the year. Perkins elected to return to LSU for another year in Blake Baker's defense. LSU will slot Perkins at the STAR position -- the hybrid defender that's become critical to defending modern offenses. The thinking is that the STAR position allows Perkins to play in space and lets Baker deploy Perkins all over the field. Brian Kelly said Perkins now has a "complete knowledge" of the game. "He's not just a guy out there running around making plays. He's so much more intentional. He knows the game. He knows the nuances of it," Kelly said. Let's take a look at exactly what LSU fans should expect from Perkins on the field in 2025. Predicting LSU football star Harold Perkins' 2025 stats Perkins will be all over the place in 2025. He won't get the chance to rack up stats in one specific category, but these numbers reflect a strong all-around defender playing at an All-SEC level. Some may be a bit generous given Perkins' last two years and we don't know what he's going to look like, but the reports are positive. Perkins is set to have his best season since the 2022 campaign.

Where Phil Steele ranks LSU football's 2025 wide receiving core ahead of 2025 season

LSU football's wide receiver play could return to a championship level in 2025. College football analyst Phil Steele ranked the Tigers' pass-catching corps atop the SEC, sharing the No. 1 ranking with Alabama. Steele dropped his unit rankings in his annual preview magazine earlier this summer. LSU lost four of its five leading receivers from the 2024 team, but the most productive of the bunch, Aaron Anderson, is back. LSU was aggressive in the transfer portal, signing Kentucky's Barion Brown and Oklahoma's Nic Anderson. Brown and Anderson both ranked among the best transfer receivers of the cycle. LSU signed Destyn Hill, too, a former blue-chip recruit out of New Orleans who dealt with injury issues at Florida State. Also returning is Chris Hilton Jr, providing LSU a vertical threat outside. With quarterback Garrett Nussmeier throwing the ball, LSU's passing attack is shaping up to be explosive. LSU's offense was efficient in 2024, but the Tigers failed to create explosive plays at will like they did in 2023. The 2025 offense doesn't have to match the record numbers of 2023, but LSU wide receivers project to put up big numbers. When is LSU football's first game of 2025? 49ers make whopping 10 transactions ahead of Monday's training camp session

The San Francisco 49ers are working their way through their 2025 training camp at the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California, and as they do, they continue to shake up their roster. On Monday, the 49ers reportedly signed defensive lineman Bradlee Anae, defensive lineman Bruce Hector, safety Jaylen Mahoney, cornerback Fabian Moreau and offensive lineman Isaiah Prince. Anae, 26, spent four seasons at Utah from 2016-19, earning All-Pac-12 honors twice and All-American honors once. After the Dallas Cowboys took him in the fifth round (No. 179 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft, he's had stints with the New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Birmingham Stallions (UFL). In 11 career games in the NFL, he's recorded two tackles. Hector, 30, played at South Florida from 2013-17, earning All-AAC honors once. After signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2018, he's had stints with the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, Detroit Lions, Arlington Renegades (XFL) and New York Jets. In 22 career games in the NFL, he's recorded 21 tackles (four for a loss) and 1.5 sacks. Mahoney, 24, spent his college career at Vanderbilt from 2019-23 before signing with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent last year. He appeared in three games and recorded three tackles in 2024. San Francisco released him last week. Moreau, 31, spent five seasons at UCLA from 2012-16 before Washington took him in the third round (No. 81 overall) of the 2017 NFL draft. After four seasons there, he had stints with the Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, New York Giants, Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings. He's appeared in 113 NFL games in his career and recorded 305 tackles ( five for a loss), 43 passes defensed, seven interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Prince, 28, spent four seasons at Ohio State from 2015-18, earning All-Big Ten honors in his final two seasons with the Buckeyes before the Miami Dolphins took him in the sixth round (No. 202 overall) of the 2019 NFL draft. He's also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans, appearing in 22 games and starting six over his professional seasons. To make room for these additions to the roster, the 49ers released kicker Greg Joseph, cornerback Tre Avery, wide receiver Isaiah Neyor, quarterback Tanner Mordecai and tight end Mason Pline. Joseph, 31, was signed this offseason to compete with Jake Moody for the kicker job. While Joseph made more of his attempts than Moody, it seems the 49ers are going with the younger option. Avery, 28, was a 49ers' waiver claim this past December after he was waived by the Tennessee Titans. He never played a snap for San Francisco, but he had played in 38 games in Tennessee. Neyor, 24, signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent this offseason after playing at Wyoming (2020-21), Texas (2022-23) and Nebraska (2024) in college. San Francisco has made plenty of moves at wide receiver, and this is the latest. Mordecai, 25 signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent last year after splitting his college career between Oklahoma (2018-20), SMU (2021-22) and Wisconsin (2023). He spent the year on the practice squad, and with the 49ers signing Carter Bradley recently, they don't need the extra arm. Pline, 25, signed with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent last year out of Furman. He spent the year on the practice article originally appeared on Niners Wire: 49ers make whopping 10 transactions ahead of Monday's practice
