12 of the best travel adapters and converters for your next trip abroad
International adapters let travelers charge dual-voltage devices in any electrical outlet by converting the shape and size of the prong socket — and without being tied down to (potentially dangerous) USB charge points in hotels and airports.
There are also power converters, which convert the voltage of your electronics to avoid blowing a fuse in your hotel room or burning out single-voltage devices. These are often required for hair straighteners, clothes steamers and similar appliances.
Selecting the right travel adapter or converter can be tricky. You need to consider your destination, the devices you need to charge and the number of outlets and USB ports required. This is particularly important when traveling with multiple gadgets.
'A good international adapter can make or break your trip,' says Scott Mayerowitz, travel industry expert and founder of GlobeTrotScott Strategies. 'Access to outlets and USB charging points is so inconsistent. At some airports and hotels, there are plenty of outlets and charging ports while at others you are scrambling for that one outlet hidden away behind a nightstand.'
Here are some of our favorite travel adapters and converters to keep you charged around the world.
Universal power adapters work in most regions worldwide, so you can use the same adapter on all your future trips. Many have built-in USB-A and USB-C ports for easy device charging, as well. Just note that they do not convert voltage, so don't use them with single-voltage devices like hairdryers.
Epicka Universal Travel Adapter with USB-C
This is Mayerowitz's pick for an international power adapter because it has multiple USB-C ports, including a 70-watt port that can charge his MacBook Air without having to plug in another power adapter.
Epicka Mini Universal Travel Adapter
This is the smallest international travel adapter I've seen. It's barebones — there are no USB ports, just a US-style plug for conversion — but it works with most plugs, including UK, EU, AU and others. And at just $10, it's perfect for travelers on a budget.
Saunorch Universal Travel Power Adapter
This budget-friendly universal power adapter is another CNN Underscored favorite, largely because of its low price. When I tested the device, I had no issues using it in 10+ countries. It also has one USB-C port and three USB-A ports.
Targus World Power Travel Adapter
The Targus World Power Travel Adapter has individual adapters for each region, all contained in a case that's little more than the size of a pepper grinder. If you're only visiting a single country, take individual adapters to save space in your luggage. If you're heading to Europe, these adapters will work great across the region and in non-European countries like Morocco that use EU-style outlets. The universal adapters highlighted in the previous section also work in Europe.
One thing to note. Some of these power adapters do not work in the UK and Ireland unless specifically noted. These countries use a different outlet (type G) than the rest of Europe.
Foval European Travel Plug Adapter
This is my power adapter of choice for trips to Europe. It has four USB-A ports, a USB-C port and three US plug outlets, plus a 5-foot cable. The device has a built-in European plug and includes US and UK adapters.Read our review
Orei European Power Plug Adapter, 3-Pack
This small European power adapter has two US-style outlets: one grounded and one ungrounded. You can use both at the same time, perfect for charging a phone and a tablet with their US power blocks. This three-pack means you have enough adapters for the whole family.
Anker European Travel Plug Adapter
I like this European adapter because it's compact and has two US-style plugs (one grounded, one not grounded), two USB-C ports and a USB-A port. The charger can output up to 15 watts through the USB ports for relatively quick charge speeds. Looking to charge your smartphone, smartwatch and other gadgets worldwide and don't need a US-style AC outlet? These devices have you covered.
Satechi GaN Travel Charger
Our travel products editor swears by this travel power adapter. It has four USB-C ports with a combined total output of 145 watts, so you can quickly charge phones, MacBooks and more. Plus, it includes US, EU, UK and AU power adapters.Read our review
Apple World Travel Adapter Kit
The Apple World Travel Adapter Kit includes converters that pop right on your existing MacBook charger so it can work throughout North America, Japan, China, the UK, Europe, Korea, Australia and beyond. Plus, it has the iconic all-white Apple aesthetic that matches the rest of your devices.
Twelve South ButterFly 2-in-1 MagSafe Charger
This premium wireless charger has been in our senior money and travel editor's backpack for the past couple of months. Not only does it charge his iPhone and Apple Watch, but it includes a 30-watt USB-C charger with US, UK, EU and AU plug adapters.Read our review If you need to use single-voltage devices — think electric razors and hair straighteners — abroad, you'll need a power converter. These drop voltage from 220V to 110V, so you can use them safely. Just make sure you read the specifications of the adapter you're using to ensure it works with your devices.
Note you do not need these to charge most smartphones, laptops and other dual-voltage devices. However, since power converters have multiple outlets, you can use them alongside other devices.
Key Power 230W Step Down 220V to 110V Voltage Converter
This universal travel adapter was made for digital nomads and those taking a working vacation. The compact design easily fits into a travel backpack or carry-on bag, but the best part is the built-in USB ports and an extension cord that lets you plug in a laptop or tablet on the other side of the room. It is compatible with five socket types: UK, EU, US, Australia and India. It claims to work with single-voltage devices like electric razors, curling irons and electric toothbrushes.
Foval Power Step Down 220V to 110V Voltage Converter
This multi-use power converter can accommodate up to four smartphones at once and also has two standard plugs for charging or using larger electrical devices like laptops or hairstyling products like straighteners or curling irons. However, do not use devices that produce more than 230W with this device, like hair dryers. What is the difference between a travel adapter and a travel converter?
What is the difference between a travel adapter and a travel converter?
A travel power adapter makes it so you can use your existing chargers and devices with other types of power outlets, but it does not convert voltage. You can only use travel power adapters for dual-voltage devices, which includes most laptop and phone chargers.
Meanwhile, a travel power converter changes voltage so you can use some single-voltage devices abroad. For example, if your curling iron is only rated for 110-120V, you need a converter to safely use it in 220-230V countries.
It's important to know that power converters — especially ones designed for travel — do not support all devices. Hairdryers, for example, are too high-powered for many of these converters. Do your own research and make sure your single-voltage devices are compatible with the power converter you buy.
What appliances need a converter?
What appliances need a converter?
Single-voltage devices need a power converter. An appliance's supported voltage is often listed on the bottom of the appliance or near its plug. So if your appliance of choice only supports 110-120V and you're traveling somewhere with 220-230V, you'll need a power converter to use it.
What happens if you use the wrong power adapter?
What happens if you use the wrong power adapter?
Using a device made for 110-120V outlets in a 220-230V outlet could damage the device and the outlet it's plugged into. Worst yet, it could pose safety risks.

We tried building our dream life in Portugal. After 3 years, we realized living abroad was actually holding us back.
For years, living abroad felt like a dream. In my mid-20s, I'd left my home in Canada in 2012 with an EU passport in hand. I moved to Brussels, where I built a marketing career and earned a Ph.D. During a stint living in Rio, I even met my now-husband. Together, around 2020, we landed in Portugal, which we'd thought would be our forever home. It seemed like a great fit as we both spoke fluent Portuguese and wanted to stay in Europe. Plus, Lisbon had direct flights to both Toronto (where I'm from) and Rio (where he's from). By this point, I was planning to start my own swimwear business, and Portugal, once again, felt like an excellent choice — it gets lots of sun and is renowned for its textile industry. For the next few years, we navigated hurdles and put down roots. I launched my business (Now in Rio Swim), and we bought a fixer-upper in a village outside Lisbon. But by our third year in Portugal, building a family and securing my future were on my mind. I realized I couldn't write the next chapter of my life how I wanted while living abroad. And, much to my surprise, I had begun to miss home. Many things felt difficult or impossible for me to accomplish in Portugal — especially as a freelancer without citizenship The more rooted I tried to become in Portugal, the more I felt like I was being pushed away. Despite speaking the local language, I often felt like I was fighting a battle just to accomplish essential bureaucratic tasks. Simply opening a bank account took me several trips and hours of collecting documents. As a freelancer not hired by a Portuguese company, I ran into many issues when needing to provide my proof of income and employment. Without a fixed contract from a local company, I was often not considered a reliable applicant for many loans. Plus, many situations were made more difficult by the fact that I had a residency permit, not a citizenship. Applying for a mortgage was complicated, and I was unable to get financing to buy a car, get credit cards, or take out business loans. In Portugal, we were able to get one credit card, which was in my husband's name, with a limit of €1,000 — all the bank would give us. We made it work for a while, but it really became an issue once we needed help starting a family through IVF, a process that would cost us thousands. We couldn't take out loans to cover the cost, and it was too much to put on that credit card. By this point, I was 36 years old and we'd been in Portugal for three years. As much as I'd loved living abroad for the past decade, we truly felt we couldn't build the future we wanted in Portugal. Much to my surprise, I was also missing my home, family, and community in Canada. So, I convinced my Brazilian husband to move north with me. In many ways, moving back to Canada felt like a breath of fresh air Living in Canada again, I felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. So many things felt more accessible than they were before. Tasks I struggled to accomplish in Portugal were flying off my to-do list. I bought a car, and I was able to secure a business loan to relaunch my company. Part of this ease is probably because I'm Canadian, but my Brazilian husband has also felt this shift. He secured his permanent residency within six months of arriving and got his driver's license. Plus, he's working and taking government-funded English classes. When he first arrived, he was able to get a credit card with a limit of several thousand dollars, and I got a lower-rate credit card with a sizable limit, too. Within the first year, we were able to go through the IVF process, and fall pregnant with our first child. I spent thousands on medications in a span of seven days — and we were able to use our higher limits on Canadian credit cards to make this happen (though we still made sure to pay them off quickly). Canada's not perfect, and I miss Portugal and all of its beauty. But then I wonder if I could ever live abroad again after experiencing how easy everything feels here. Yes, there are obstacles to overcome — but I look forward to having a family here and growing my business. For years, we thought Europe was our forever home. But this, right here, feels like the start of something better.

Promising review: "If I could give this vacuum 10 stars, I would!!! I have four dogs and a long-haired cat. My house always felt dirty, and hair was always everywhere. I dreaded vacuuming because I would have to repeat areas so much, it took forever!! I bought this months ago but for reasons I won't go into I just started using it a week ago. I ran it 3 times for the first few days, and every time it picked up sooooo much!! I've been running it two to three times a day for a week now. I did not map anything because I am changing the room soon and will map it then. But just going on its own, it gets everywhere thoroughly! Because I don't have it mapped it does areas multiple times sometimes and sometimes it makes it rounds and then docks itself. Did I mention it's amazing! It knows how to get itself unstuck (I've had it happen once where it got so stuck it died trying to get out) other than that it always gets out. It goes around places and objects. Its suction is great! I have carpet and hard floors and it has NO trouble getting to and from each flooring. I LOVE THIS VACUUM! Everyone needs one! It's great quality!" —Jessica RichouxPrice: $297.99 (originally $599) — plus see all the other deals on Shark items here! Promising review: "Brought this for my daughter's 7th birthday. She had the older version since she was 4. She loved it and it still worked well ( a bit slower) so I decided to upgrade her to this one. This one is my fav of the two. Mainly because I can control and see everything she's doing from the Amazon kids app on my phone. I really like that feature. She likes the bigger size and better image quality. I would recommend this tablet to anyone with young kids. It's worry-free because you know everything they're doing is safe. You're in control as to how long they can use it, what they can see/do, etc. She's also able to call or video chat me with it and she loves that. I have a timer on it daily and when it goes off, that's it for the day. She'll easily use Amazon kids tablet until she's at least 12." —CayPrice: $133.99 (originally $189.99; available in four colors) A Ninja coffee maker for 23% off since you take your morning brew seriously and want a machine that'll craft everything from lattes to iced coffee. It's got four different brewing styles and works with pods or grounds. It doesn't take up a bunch of counter space, but will look real cute while making your cup of joe. Promising review: "After owning another Ninja coffee maker a few years ago and having it leak and die on me, I had just about given up on the brand. But man was I pleasantly surprised with the functionality and design of the grounds and pods machine. The pods side provides you with a good amount of sizing options( up to 12 ounces) and most of the style features while the grounds sides gives you endless options with serving sizes up to 24 ounces and the ability to use the specialty feature that makes cafe style lattes and frappuccino's. The frother is another great feature that will whisk up milk and cream in no time for rich drinks and beverages. Also, this machine gets hot!! One thing I hate is a coffee maker that pours out lukewarm coffee and doesn't fully saturate the grounds. This one gets very hot very quickly and gives you the perfect temp for every serving size. Overall, I love the machine and was impressed with its features and brewing capabilities." —Persesphone2Price: $99.95+ (originally $129.99+; available in four colors and two sizes) A TP-Link Wi-Fi extender for 33% off (its lowest price) that'll help boost your Wi-Fi connection so you can seamlessly get all your WFH tasks done or just catch up on the latest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty without it buffering. My internet router is located in my master bedroom, but my office is in the middle of my house, meaning I didn't have a strong signal for work. I called my internet provider, and they wanted to charge me a lot of money to extend the internet across my house. I ended up buying this extender to help with the signal. I'm glad I purchased it because now I have coverage on the other side of my house. It was easy to install, and the app is super simple, all for a great price. Thanks to the TP-Link extender, without it, I would've had to go back to work at the office." —JaryPrice: $19.99 (originally $29.99) and shop all the TP-Link deals here A pack of medicube collagen jelly face masks for 28% off to give you that "just went to the spa"-glow without actually leaving home. Promising review: "The [medicube] Collagen Mask is one of my go-to sheet masks when my skin needs a boost. It leaves my face feeling so hydrated, bouncy, and refreshed. Also, no irritation at all, even with rosacea, my skin felt calm and pampered." —LliserPrice: $14.32 (typically $19.90) A compact Levoit air purifier for 22% off (that's the lowest price this goes for!) that'll trap dust, pollen, smoke, pet dander, and other particles using its HEPA filter. It even has "smart" features like being able to control it from your phone, set a schedule, and put it in "sleep mode" (with no nightlight). BuzzFeed Shopping editor Maitland Quitmeyer says: "I have the non-smart version of this in my bedroom, and I love it. Just note that when you get it, you need to take the filter out and unwrap it before using!"Promising review: "I waited over a month to write a review — this air purifier is amazing!! It's one of those products that you don't understand how much of a difference it makes until you get one. I have two cats, and my house is all carpet, so the house can smell stagnant sometimes, especially if the AC is off. One of my cats also has asthma, so I got this air purifier mostly for her, but it's made such a HUGE difference in the way my home smells. Since having it, my house has consistently smelled fresh, clean, and odorless. Even after forgetting to clean the litter boxes, my house has not smelled like cat litter since I've had it. It's very easy to set up. I bought a little plant stand to put it on so it wouldn't be on the carpet. It's very quiet, and the app is easy to use. It tells you the life of your filter, which is super helpful, and these filters last for a long time! You can set it up to be on a schedule, so you can set it up once and just forget about it. I recommend this air purifier to everyone. I'm NEVER worried about my house smelling anything but clean now. I would repurchase this a thousand times over." —haileePrice: $69.99 (originally $89.99) — check out the other Levoit deals here! My old Invisalign needed to be cleaned. I read the reviews and decided to purchase. OMG it worked! There was a fresh taste and they were clean. I wish I had found this product sooner. I did let them soak overnight only because I had been wearing them for the last four months. Nothing happened to Invisalign; there was no weakness or anything. Just very clean and fresh. It's easy to set up and watch the live feed from your smartphone, and the motion-activated 700 Lumen floodlights make sure you have a clear view of people, animals, and any other happenings. Promising review: "The Blink Outdoor 4 Floodlight Camera is a great addition to my home security setup. The wire-free design made installation a breeze, and the camera provides clear HD video with reliable motion detection. The 700-lumen floodlight is bright enough to illuminate my yard at night, adding an extra layer of security. I also love that it integrates seamlessly with Alexa, allowing me to view the live feed or receive alerts on my Echo devices. The two-year battery life is impressive, but keep in mind it can vary depending on usage. My only minor complaint is that the motion detection can sometimes be too sensitive, picking up movement from small animals or trees swaying in the wind. Adjusting the settings helps, but it takes some trial and error. Overall, this is an excellent security camera for its price, offering convenience, reliability, and peace of mind. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a wire-free smart security solution! —Leslie OalmannPrice: $64.99 (originally $129.98) A 6-qt. Instant Pot for 33% off — it hasn't been that low since December of last year! With 10 cooking functions, you'll be able to chef up your favorite meals, whether it's a simple soup or a famous slow-cook recipe from grandma. Plus, the inner pot and lid are dishwasher-safe, making clean up a total breeze. Promising review: "I'm a retired professional chef and I've avoided purchasing one of these for many years. However, once I had gone through three different rice cookers in a little over a year (all garbage, though highly rated online), I did some research and decided on this bad boy. It's fantastic, easy to use, and gets the job done to perfection. I made pot roast with all the fixins in just over an hour. Delicious! I also no longer need a rice cooker or my slow cooker so that frees up lots of countertop space. I don't know about other brands but I highly recommend this one. It's an extra bonus that it's lower fat, doesn't use a ton of electricity, and doesn't heat up my kitchen here in the south in the midst of a blistering summer." —Deborah VaughnPrice: $113.85 (originally $169.99; available in three sizes) A four-pack of fruit fly traps for 31% off if you find that flies are living rent-free in your home AND helping themselves to your fresh produce. Just place this near your trash can, sink, or fruit bowl, and empty half of the lure solution into the apple. Promising review: "Very easy to use and extremely effective. These small simple fruit fly traps when used will kill the gnats and small flying irritants quickly. 4 of them scattered about my apartment killed an infestation of fruit flies in less than 48 hours. No holiday for 42 million EU workers: Where is holiday the most unaffordable in Europe?
In 2023, 15% of employed people in the EU were unable to afford a one-week holiday away from home. While this percentage might not appear very high at first glance, it represents around 42 million workers. In each of the EU's "Big Four" economies (Germany, France, Spain and Italy), over 5 million workers were unable to afford a week-long holiday according to Eurostat data published by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). 'Taking a break with family or friends is important for our physical and mental health, and it is a basic part of the European social contract,' said ETUC General Secretary Esther Lynch, criticising the situation. Holiday poverty among workers continues to rise Holiday poverty among workers is on the rise across the EU, marking the third consecutive annual increase. In 2022, 40.5 million employed people reported being unable to afford a one-week holiday away from home. That number rose to 41.5 million in 2023—an increase of over one million workers in just a year. The share of affected workers grew from 14% to 15%. 'The findings are the result of an increasingly unequal economy, in which workers are forced to give up their holidays due to rising costs for accommodation, transport and food, combined with declining purchasing power and speculation', the ETUC stated. Related The cost of love: Europe's most expensive and cheapest cities for a date Cost of living: Which are the cheapest and most expensive countries in Europe? East-West gap in holiday affordability for workers The data reveals a strong disparity in holiday affordability across the EU, particularly between Eastern/Southern Europe and Western/Northern Europe. Romania tops the list, with 32% of workers unable to afford a one-week holiday. Close behind are Hungary (26%), Bulgaria (24%), Portugal and Cyprus (both 23%), and Slovakia (22%). The Nordic countries—Finland, Sweden and Denmark—along with the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Slovenia, report the lowest levels of holiday poverty, ranging between 5% and 7%. Czechia, Austria, and Belgium reported holiday poverty rates at or below 10%. Despite their economic weight, even the EU's largest economies report concerning levels of holiday poverty. Among the EU's Big Four, Spain (18%) and Italy (17%) exceed the EU average of 15%. France (12%) and Germany (11%) fall below the average, but both still remain above 10%. EU's Big Four: Over 5 million workers in each country can't afford a holiday Absolute figures speak louder than percentages. Over 5 million workers in each of the EU's Big Four were unable to afford a holiday in 2023. In Italy, the number stood at 6.2 million, followed by 5.8 million in Germany, 5.6 million in Spain, and 5.1 million in France. Over 3.5 million workers in Romania and Poland also couldn't afford a holiday. This figure was more than 1.5 million in Hungary and Portugal. In Austria and the Netherlands, over 550,000 workers couldn't afford even a one-week holiday despite being employed or having a business. 'After working hard all year, it is the least working people should be able to expect to afford and should not be allowed to become a luxury for the few,' Lynch said. 'However, these figures show that Europe has a quality jobs emergency and that our social contract is continuing to crumble as the result of growing economic inequality.' Related China rare earth exports to the US surge 660% after trade agreement The Big Question: Do companies need to re-evaluate how they set climate goals? Is holiday poverty linked to income? There is a moderately strong negative correlation between the share of workers who cannot afford a one-week holiday away from home and annual net earnings. This means that as net earnings increase, the proportion of workers unable to afford such a holiday tends to decrease. However, since the correlation is moderate, it also indicates that in some countries, this relationship is not strong or does not follow the overall trend as closely. For example, Ireland (€43,897) had one of the highest annual net earnings in the EU in 2023, yet holiday poverty remains comparatively high. In contrast, Slovenia has a low level of holiday poverty among workers, even though the incomes are similar to countries where more people struggle to afford a holiday. Related Win for the crypto industry: US passed the first major bill to regulate digital assets Strong correlation between workers and general population By comparing workers (aged 15-64) and the general population aged 16 and over, Euronews Business found a strong correlation: the higher the rate of workers who cannot afford a holiday, the higher it tends to be in the overall population. In 2023, among the general population, the share of people unable to afford a one-week holiday ranged from 11% in Luxembourg to 60% in Romania, while the EU average stood at 29%. This suggests that the rate among the general population is nearly double that of workers. Experts speaking to Euronews Business had noted that differences between countries are largely tied to the strength of their economies. The level of disposable income plays a key role, as it directly affects people's ability to spend on holidays—particularly when looking at figures for the general population. The ETUC calls on national governments to fully implement the Minimum Wage Directive and urges the European Commission to ensure that the Quality Job Package due this year includes legislation to rebalance the economy—making respect for collective bargaining a condition for access to public contracts.
