Is it India's 79th Independence Day or 78th in 2025? Here's what you need to know

Time of India2 days ago
As India gears up to celebrate its next
Independence Day
on August 15, 2025, a familiar question resurfaces across newsrooms, classrooms, and even social media: Is it the 78th or the
79th Independence Day
? At first glance, the math seems simple. Subtract 1947 from 2025 and you get 78. That's the number of years completed since India gained freedom from British colonial rule. But when it comes to counting Independence Days, the logic works a bit differently, and that's where the confusion begins.
So, is this Independence Day number 78 or 79? Let's break it down.

Why the confusion?
India gained independence on August 15, 1947. That date marked the country's first Independence Day. Since then, the nation has observed the day every year as a reminder of the end of colonial rule and the birth of a sovereign democracy.

Some people mistakenly believe you should subtract 1947 from the current year, 2025, and say India is turning 78. While it is true that 2025 minus 1947 equals 78 years, that number represents the number of completed years of independence, not the count of the Independence Days observed.
Is it India's 79th Independence Day? So, what number is it?
India celebrated its 1st Independence Day in 1947, not in 1948. That means the count starts from one, not zero. So:
Live Events
1947 – 1st Independence Day
1948 – 2nd
...
2024 – 78th
2025 – 79th Independence Day
That's why August 15, 2025, marks the 79th time the country will raise the flag and remember its journey of freedom.
Why it matters
The confusion over this number is common, but it's more than just arithmetic. Independence Day is not just about marking how many years have passed, it's about honouring every single year of freedom earned, defended, and cherished.
The 79th Independence Day also comes at a time when India is reflecting on its progress, both socially and economically. From a newly independent nation grappling with partition and poverty to a global voice in areas like technology, space, and diplomacy, the journey has been remarkable.
In schools and media, get it right
Whether it's Independence Day speeches in schools, social media posts, or news headlines, it's important to state it correctly. 2025 marks the 79th Independence Day, and the country will complete 78 years of independence.
It's a small detail, but one that reflects how we understand and honour our history.

Epstein investigation files, Clintons subpoenaed by House panel

House Republicans subpoenaed the Justice Department and a slew of former US officials for information about Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking operation, while his convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell fought back in federal court against making materials in her case public. This undated trial evidence image obtained December 8, 2021, from the US District Court for the Southern District of New York shows British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell and US financier Jeffrey Epstein.(AFP) The developments played out from Washington to New York on Tuesday, pouring fresh fuel on a controversy that President Donald Trump and his top aides have been unable to shake for weeks. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer sent a letter Tuesday to Attorney General Pam Bondi demanding the 'full, complete, unredacted Epstein files,' including information about Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her role in sexually abusing underage women. While Comer is a Trump ally, his hand was forced to issue the subpoena after Democrats on his committee team up with rank-and-file Republicans to vote in favor of forcing disclosure of the Justice Department records. Comer expanded on the Democratic-backed subpoena to also compel testimony from officials from prior administrations, including frequent Trump targets such as former FBI Director James Comey and President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary, Trump's opponent in the 2016 presidential election. It wasn't clear what, if any, information they have on the case. Still, the subpoenas set up a potential confrontation between the Republican-led panel and the Trump administration over access to the Justice Department's investigative records. Trump and his top aides have faced a firestorm over their handling of the Epstein case, with supporters and critics alike demanding they release documents, financial records and information about Epstein's sex-trafficking operation and who may have committed crimes against underage girls. Congressional Democrats made life so politically painful for House Republicans over Epstein that Speaker Mike Johnson sent the House home early for its August break in order to avoid votes on publicly releasing the Epstein files. Democrats had repeatedly offered amendments to legislation to compel the administration to make the files public and GOP leaders halted work on major legislation. Trump has acknowledged he had a personal relationship with Epstein long ago and attended social gatherings with him but has denied knowing anything about his sex-trafficking operation. The Wall Street Journal stoked new controversy over Trump's relationship with Epstein with a story last month that said the president once sent a suggestive birthday letter to Epstein. Trump denied the story and sued the news organization. In the face of rising pressure from fellow Republicans and critics demanding more information about the case, the Justice Department has asked federal judges in New York to unseal grand jury materials related to Epstein and Maxwell. Maxwell fought back in court on Tuesday, opposing the request to unseal grand jury transcripts in her criminal case, saying she is still fighting her conviction. 'The public interest identified by the government — while understandable — is insufficient to warrant disclosure of grand jury materials at this time,' Maxwell's lawyers wrote in a legal filing. 'The government frames this interest as 'historical,' yet it is nothing more than widespread and intense public scrutiny about an ongoing criminal case.' The Justice Department has indicated in court filings that the grand jury material is very limited and probably won't shed any new light on what is already publicly known about Epstein's operation. In comparison, the department has a huge collection of documents and files obtained during the investigations into Epstein and Maxwell, including interviews with witnesses and victims. The subpoena to the department seeks all documents and communications related to seven different categories, including the criminal cases against Epstein and Maxwell and information about Epstein's death. Comer's panel gave the Justice Department until Aug. 19 to turn over records related to Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 as he faced sex-trafficking charges. A Justice Department spokesman didn't respond to a request for comment, nor did a spokesperson for the Clintons. Bill Clinton, who has acknowledged traveling on Epstein's private airplane, has previously denied knowing anything about the financier's sex-trafficking. The Justice Department is traditionally reluctant to share all its investigative files with lawmakers and has resisted demands so far to make more information about Epstein's operation public. Comer's panel already subpoenaed Maxwell for an Aug. 11 deposition. But her lawyers have demanded criminal immunity in return for her testimony and Comer hasn't agreed to the request.

Pakistan, Turkiye & Bangladesh not on list of invitees for RSS centenary celebration

NEW DELHI: RSS will not extend invitations to the embassies of Pakistan, Turkiye and Bangladesh for its 100th anniversary celebrations, even as it is reaching out to other diplomatic missions it's been in touch with. The list of invitees includes representatives of minority communities, sports and cultural icons, thought leaders and entrepreneurs from emerging fields such as startups and Indian knowledge systems. The highlight of the centenary year will be a three-day dialogue in Delhi from Aug 26, led by sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat , focusing on Sangh's century-long journey, its role in nation-building and its vision for "new horizons". Bhagwat's Delhi address will be part of a series of four major events in the run-up to the Vijayadashami centenary on Oct 2. Similar dialogues are scheduled in Bengaluru in Nov, Kolkata thereafter, and Mumbai. Each will feature two days of lectures by Bhagwat and a third day devoted to a pre-submitted question-and-answer session. The Delhi programme will begin at 5.30 pm each day and will also delve into 'Panch Parivartan' (Five Transformations) agenda of the centenary year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Secret Lives of the Romanovs — the Last Rulers of Imperial Russia! According to RSS prachar pramukh Sunil Ambekar, the invitation list spans around 17 main categories and 138 sub-categories, including social, economic, religious, spiritual, sports, arts, media and intellectual leaders. "Our aim is that the entire country should move forward together on its development journey. We want a dialogue with all sections of society," he said. Ambekar added that while outreach to some foreign missions was under way, certain countries would be excluded. "We are in contact with many embassies but given the current context, Pakistan will not be invited," he said. According to RSS sources, countries like Bangladesh and Turkiye are not going to be invited. The outreach programme also covers young innovators in technology, language promotion and entrepreneurship.

'Can I say I won them athletically': Trump jokes after receiving 1984 Olympic medals; prepares for 2028 games with new task force

US President Donald Trump presented with Olympic medals from the 1984 LA Games by Casey Wasserman, chairman of the LA28 organising committee (Image credits: AP) US President Donald Trump was presented with Olympic medals from the 1984 Los Angeles Games on Tuesday by Casey Wasserman, chairman of the LA28 organising committee. During the exchange, Trump joked, 'Can I say that I won them athletically? That would be a great honour' He later thanked Wasserman through a post on Truth Social, saying, 'Thank you to Casey Wasserman, Chairman of 2028 LA Olympics…' The medal presentation took place at a White House event where Trump later signed an executive order establishing a presidential task force for the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be hosted in Los Angeles. Calling the event a 'wonderful moment for America,' Trump said, 'The LA Olympics is shaping up to be a wonderful moment for America. It's going to be incredible. It's so exciting.' The newly formed task force will be responsible for coordinating security, streamlining visa and credentialing processes, and ensuring the Games are 'safe, seamless and historically successful.' Trump will serve as chair, instead of Governer Gavin Newsom. Vice President JD Vance will serve as vice chair and the task force will include Cabinet secretaries and other top administration officials. 'The United States will not let men steal trophies from women at the 2028 Olympics,' Trump said at the event, praising Gene Sykes, chair of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee board, for the USOPC's move to bar transgender women from women's sports. After initial silence, Trump questioned the lack of applause, which was followed by scattered clapping. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Will Happen to Your Body If You Start Eating 3 Eggs Every Day?
