Attendance by Foreign Minister IWAYA at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Thematic Event ‘Human Security and Economic Development in Africa: Addressing Multidimensional Challenges and Shaping the Future Beyond 2030'
Foreign Minister IWAYA began by stating that Japan has fulfilled its role as a reliable partner to Africa, and that in the current global environment of complex crises, it is important for Japan and Africa to work together to pursue solutions that leverage the strengths of both sides in order to address the challenges Africa and the world are facing. He also stated that Japan aims to 'co-create innovative solutions' with Africa.
Foreign Minister IWAYA also stated that in recent years, Africa has been facing complex and interrelated crises such as climate change, and that traditional development approaches are not sufficient to solve these issues. He said that human security, which Japan has promoted as a pillar of its foreign policy, is a comprehensive approach that emphasises the protection of each and every human being, and that human security is an indispensable concept for building a future full of freedom, safety, and hope for the people, with an emphasis on peace and development in Africa.
Furthermore, Foreign Minister IWAYA introduced the 'Agenda 2063,' Africa's long-term strategy, which aims to 'eradicate conflict and violence (Silencing the Gun) ' as its flagship initiative based on the concept of human security. He reaffirmed Japan's support for Africa's efforts to prioritize human security and pointed out the critical importance of high-quality development cooperation by JICA and the role of international organizations such as the United Nations. He then stated that Japan will continue to prioritize multilateralism and actively promote international cooperation.

Seychelles: Minister Sylvestre Radegonde addresses Plenary Session on Peace and Stability at the 9th edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development Summit (TICAD)
The 9th edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development Summit (TICAD9) is taking place in Yokohama, Japan from 20th to 22nd August under the theme 'Co-Create Innovative Solutions with Africa'. During the first day of the Summit, Minister Sylvestre Radegonde addressed the plenary session on Peace and Stability. He stated that this year's theme calls for deeper, more balanced, and forward-looking partnerships and in the context of the TICAD summit, he called for more enhanced cooperation between Africa and Japan, a partnership anchored in mutual respect and a shared commitment to peace, security, and development. Highlighting the importance Seychelles places on Maritime Security, Minister Radegonde also pointed out that 'Africa's extensive maritime domain faces a growing array of transnational threats. From piracy, arms and drug trafficking, and illegal fishing, to human smuggling and emerging cyber risks, these challenges transcend national boundaries. They demand regional coordination, shared responsibility, and strong multilateral cooperation.' He placed particular emphasis on fragility of Maritime trade in the region referring to the recent conflict in the Red Sea which led to the 'rerouting of vessels away from the Suez Canal and disrupted African ports and supply chains, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen the resilience and security of maritime corridors.' Minister Radegonde also mentioned the increasing importance of other domains of security such as Cybersecurity and called for collective efforts to 'build cyber resilience, uphold digital sovereignty, and encourage the responsible and ethical use of such emerging technologies.' Minister Radegonde commended Japan's long-standing commitment and financial assistance to maritime security in Africa. He stated that 'through the technical support provided to the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme by the Japanese Government, has helped enhance law enforcement capabilities, strengthen institutional resilience, and improve operational coordination across coastal states.' Tunisia: Progress in talks on launching direct flight between Tunis and Douala
Yokohama – Talks on launching a direct flight between Tunis and Douala (Cameroon) were the focus of a meeting Wednesday between Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri and her Cameroonian counterpart, Joseph Ngute, in Yokohama, Japan. Zenzri underlined that this new air connection would strengthen strategic ties between Tunisia and Cameroon as well as promote academic, scientific, medical, and professional exchanges. She also stressed that the project would attract investment and boost bilateral cooperation in trade, finance, tourism, industry, and healthcare. For his part, the Cameroonian Prime Minister, accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Economy, highlighted Tunisia's expertise in scientific, academic, and investment fields. He also pointed to the valuable contribution of Tunisian professionals in Cameroon, including companies, consulting firms, doctors, and engineers, in consolidating economic ties.
