US to de Mistura : «Autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution»

Lisa Kenna, Executive Secretary of the United States Department of State, met yesterday with the United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, «to consult on his valuable and ongoing contributions to advancing peace in the Western Sahara».
In a post on X, Kenna reaffirmed the «clear U.S. position – genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution». She added, «The parties must come to the table now to negotiate a mutually acceptable result».

Kenna also attended a meeting on Tuesday, April 8, between U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, during which the U.S. administration reiterated its support for Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara—first expressed in the December 10, 2020 declaration—and urged the Polisario Front to engage in negotiations based on Rabat's 2007 autonomy plan, under Moroccan sovereignty.
It is worth noting that Staffan de Mistura recently concluded a regional tour that included meetings with the parties directly involved in the Western Sahara dispute, with visits to Rabat, Nouakchott, the Tindouf camps, and Algiers.
The UN envoy is expected to present a closed-door briefing to members of the UN Security Council on April 14, outlining the latest developments in the Western Sahara file since October 31, 2024.

Algerian media claim UK reversed its stance on Western Sahara to neutrality [Fact Check]

Days after announcing its change of position on the Western Sahara conflict, supporting Morocco's 2007 autonomy proposal as «the most practical, credible, and achievable basis for a lasting resolution», Algerian public and private media claimed that the United Kingdom had reverted to a neutral stance. Algerian media based their reports on a statement published Monday on the official UK government website titled «New UK-Moroccan partnerships to grow UK economy». The news website Algérie Nouvelle, affiliated with the national channel, published an article titled «Britain Retracts and Supports International Legitimacy to Resolve the Western Sahara Conflict». The article added that the British government clarified its position, stating: «The United Kingdom seeks to support a lasting resolution to the Western Sahara conflict that is agreed upon by the parties, supports the UN-led process, and respects the principle of self-determination». The government channel Algérie Internationale reported that «Britain reaffirms its support for UN efforts to find a lasting solution to the conflict agreed upon by both parties». Other Algerian media outlets such as El Bilad, Echorouk, Akhbar Al Watan, and Eldjazair Daily published similar articles. David Lammy says the same thing in Rabat and London However, Algerian media failed to mention the UK government's explicit announcement regarding its change of stance on the Sahara conflict. The statement specified that «The UK has chosen to endorse autonomy within the Moroccan state as the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis for a mutually-agreed and lasting solution to the Western Sahara dispute, one that can deliver on our commitments to conflict resolution in the region and self-determination for the people of Western Sahara». Moreover, Britain, «as a member of the UN Security Council, and as a friend to countries across the region», seeks in its new position «to support a mutually-agreed solution to the conflict that supports the UN-led process and respects the principle of self-determination. Approaching the 50-year anniversary of the conflict, it is vital that we leverage this window of opportunity to secure a lasting solution to the dispute, and one that delivers a better future for the people of the Western Sahara». It is worth noting that this is not the first time Algeria has promoted the idea that countries have withdrawn their support for the autonomy proposal. In April 2024, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune claimed he had «forced» Spain to withdraw its support, and in early May 2025, the Algerian Foreign Ministry asserted that Ghana had also retracted its backing of the autonomy plan. A similar scenario occurred with Sierra Leone, a country that recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, in January 2024, as well as with Slovenia in May of the same year.

UK-Morocco forge educational ties : New agreements boost English learning and Academic mobility

During his two-day visit to Morocco on June 2, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy concluded educational agreements as part of the UK-Morocco Strategic Dialogue. A new Memorandum of Understanding establishes a Joint Steering Committee to coordinate joint research projects, transnational education programs, and English-language instruction initiatives. The agreement builds on the 2019 Higher Education Commission framework. Morocco's Ministry of Education announced it will match-fund the British Council's existing "English for Teaching" program, enabling the national expansion of pre-service training for secondary school English teachers and inspectors. This supports Morocco's objective to increase access to quality English education. In a significant policy shift, Morocco committed to automatically recognize UK higher education qualifications for Moroccan students studying in Britain. The country also pledged to facilitate the establishment of UK university campuses in Morocco while recognizing locally-delivered UK degrees. A stakeholder breakfast in Rabat brought together business leaders, educators, English teachers, and policymakers to discuss English language growth in Morocco. The agreements aim to strengthen institutional ties, increase academic mobility, and address global challenges through collaborative innovation.

Nearly 43,000 Moroccans Obtained Spanish Nationality in 2024

Doha – Moroccans led the list of foreigners who acquired Spanish nationality in 2024, with 42,910 Moroccan citizens becoming Spanish nationals last year, according to data released Thursday by Spain's National Institute of Statistics (INE). The total number of foreigners who obtained Spanish nationality reached 252,476 in 2024, marking a 5.1% increase from the previous year and setting a record high since these statistics began in 2013. Following Morocco, Venezuela ranked second with 35,403 people obtaining Spanish citizenship, while Colombia came third with 26,224 new Spanish nationals. Other significant countries of origin included Honduras (15,574), Ecuador (10,871), Peru (10,480), and the Dominican Republic (9,452). Women represented 56% of all newly nationalized Spanish citizens in 2024, compared to 44% for men. The average residency period before obtaining nationality was five years. By age groups, people between 30 and 39 years old formed the largest group of new Spanish citizens, followed by those aged 40 to 49. The vast majority of naturalizations, 85% (215,734 cases), were granted through residency requirements. Another 14.4% obtained nationality through the option process, which typically applies to those under 20 years of age under the guardianship of a Spanish citizen or with Spanish parents born in Spain. Spain's two most populous regions led in granting nationality. Catalonia recorded 68,755 cases and the Community of Madrid registered 48,288, together accounting for 46.4% of all Spanish nationality acquisitions in 2024. These were followed by the Valencian Community with 26,729 and Andalusia with 23,157 new Spanish citizens. At the other end of the spectrum, Extremadura (1,459) and La Rioja (1,729) were the autonomous communities with the lowest number of nationality acquisitions. It's worth noting that one in five people who acquired Spanish nationality in 2024 (19.6%) had always lived in Spain, while the remaining 80.4% had previously lived abroad. For those who immigrated to Spain, 2019 was the most common year of arrival, indicating they waited about five years to obtain Spanish citizenship. The data comes from INE's 'Statistics on Acquisitions of Spanish Nationality by Residents' report, which has been published annually since 2015, with data available from 2013.
