‘They need a fighter': Dr Mahathir announces ‘big umbrella' committee to unite Malays
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reportedly announced the formation of an informal Malay committee, describing it as a 'big umbrella' to unify the Malay community.
According to a report in Malaysiakini, Mahathir met with other political leaders in Putrajaya — including PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, and PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man — before making the announcement.
'They (Malays) need fighters to champion their cause. Right now, they don't have a dedicated fighter,' he was quoted as saying
'We're not concerned with other problems, we just want to focus on one struggle — the struggle to save the Malays,' he reportedly added.
According to the report, Mahathir said that the Malays' problems could only be solved if Malays once again led the government.
He reportedly added that the movement was open to all Malays, including Umno members, provided they supported the same cause.

PAS over the moon with Cleopatra joining party; could Siti Kasim be next?
SO social media influencer and activist Nur Fathiah Syazwana Shaharuddin who is better known as Cleopatra has officially joined Islamist party PAS on May 31. Reason cited? The need to provide a better future for her children. In a Facebook post, PAS' Muslimat Wing noted that Cleopatra submitted her application to wing chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh. Nuridah said the wing has long remained committed to championing the welfare of vulnerable groups such as the poor, people with disabilities, the elderly, single mothers and orphans. 'Cleopatra's entry into PAS is seen as a strategic move to strengthen women's political engagement in Malaysia and to further the cause of community welfare,' it justified. A single mother and entrepreneur, Cleopatrah also founded women's and community rights group called the Hetero Action Women Alliance (HAWA). Could it be because she has been subject to all manner of juicy gossip? In 2024, the 31-year-old was forced to deny that she had tied the knot with former deputy inspector-general of police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Zinin in Thailand after a purported marriage certificate went public (which was later confirmed by the authorities to be fake). Or perhaps it is because Cleopatra stood as an independent candidate for the Batu parliamentary seat in 15th General Election (GE15). Alas, her popularity online did not translate into votes as she lost her deposit with a measly 628 votes. It was then cheekily suggested by some netizens that perhaps the next person to join PAS would be fire brand lawyer Siti Kasim! The poster said such an occurrence would indicate a totally warped reality involving different multiverses (alluding to Marvel Studio's multiverse concept). But why not? Like Cleopatra, Siti Kasim also lost her deposit contesting the 10-corner Batu seat contest by garnering just 653 votes. Given her outspoken views on women's rights (among various issues), Siti Kasim can also be described as a social activist who fits the Islamist party's stated vision mission in championing 'vulnerable groups'. Certainly, it would be massive coup for PAS if it is able to rope in the legal eagle who has previously had many run-ins with the Islamist party. It would mark a complete U-turn on the stated principles of the lawyer with colourful hair-dos. Meanwhile, Cleopatra's reason for joining PAS was roundly mocked by some. Since when the welfare of children is used as justification for joining a political party, wondered one commenter. Another commenter claimed that the move was seen as a sure way to get into the Dewan Rakyat. With a seat secured – possibly in Kedah or Kelantan – Cleopatra would be entitled to a pension, thus securing the future of her kids. As cheekily suggested, the entry of 31-year-old Cleopatra into the party was being celebrated by the turbaned males in PAS. This poses the question if Siti Kasim's joining PAS would generate a similar reception. PAS dep. president fumes at DAP for seeking cops' immunity from offensive Razman clown caricature
THE war of words between PAS and DAP over a clown caricature deemed offensive to Perak state opposition leader Razman Zakaria has escalated with the Islamist party's deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man calling on the latter to allow space for the police to conduct its probe into the matter. This came about as DAP Socialist Youth chief Woo Kah Leong is currently under police investigation over a social media post that depicted Razman who was the former Perak PAS commissioner as a clown riding a unicycle on a tightrope with the caption 'Raja Fitnah' (literally, 'King of Slanders'). Woo who is also the first term Pasir Bedamar state assemblyman had on April 1 uploaded the caricature in a Facebook (FB) post alongside a reference to the various instances of Razman having to apologise to Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders over various accusations he had made against them. In his defence of Razman, Tuan Ibrahim has hit out at Pahang DAP state assemblyman for Bilut, Lee Chin Chen, who was reported by Malaysiakini as having urged the police to stop their investigation against Woo. Alluding to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim himself seeking the much-criticised immunity from the civil suit filed by his former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, the PAS lawmaker described Lee's call as an extreme action which disrespects the legal process. 'This is as if they (DAP) have the power to prevent civil servants from carrying out the duties entrusted to them,' he rebuked in a FB post. 'The reasoning that the caricature is a form of satirical artistic expression that conveys criticism is superficial. Art should not be tainted with insulting messages, especially if it comes from a government exco against his political opponent. 'He shouldn't have interfered in police investigations because this country upholds the separation of powers between the executive, legislative and judicial.' In his defence over the clown caricature of Razman, Woo chided the Gunung Semanggol state assemblyman for resorting to lodge a police report instead of explaining or counter his argument with argument or to even apologise for his slew of slanders. 'Asking the police to investigate merely because of the satirical nature of the caricature is the true appearance of a Perikatan Nasional (PN) politician who is thin-skinned (berhati tisu) and easily offended (koyak),' chided the Perak state EXCO for Domestic Trade, Cooperatives, Consumer Affairs & Chinese New Villages. Recall that one of Razman's latest slander was by having mistaken Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh as the daughter of YTL Corp's late founder Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay. Following thus blunder, the PAS central leadership has since distanced itself from Razman by reportedly relieved him of his duties as the Perak PAS Commissioner with the role temporarily taken over by PAS vice-president and Bagan Serai MP Datuk Idris Ahmad. – June 4, 2025
