Public healthcare network making good progress
Penang health committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the first project, the Women and Children's Block, had reach 34.35% completion as of May 22.
'The first project worth RM307mil is scheduled for completion in January 2026,' he said in a press conference after a site visit at Jalan Residensi.
Gooi said the project was being implemented under a design-and-build tender system and included the construction of a 12-storey parking complex and an 8-storey hospital building with a 329-bed capacity alongside various specialised healthcare services.
The parking complex, he added, would be able to accommodate 449 cars at one time.
Gooi said the second project, the new Stem Cell Services Centre Block, valued at RM23mil, was expected to be completed by March 2027.
'Additional infrastructure includes 25 parking bays, a covered connecting bridge, support buildings (including a waste house and M&E room) and utility upgrades.
'This project is 10.19% completed as of May 29, with completion scheduled for March 2027,' he said

The project, he elaborated, was being carried out using the conventional method under the supervision of the Public Works Department (JKR).
He said the facility would enhance transplant-related services, including apheresis units, stem cell laboratories and other support facilities.
'The third project, the Specialist Clinic and Ward Block, with a budget of RM428mil, is projected to be completed by May 2029.
'The project is being developed through a conventional approach under JKR, where the 14-storey block will house specialist outpatient clinics and wards with a capacity of 216 beds,' he said.
He added that the project currently stood at 3.33% progress as of May 20, with completion targeted for May 2029.
Gooi said these expansion projects, when ready, would mark a significant enhancement to the state's healthcare system and facilities.
The projects represented strategic investments by the Federal Government to upgrade public healthcare infrastructure in the state under the 10th and 11th Malaysia plans, he said.
'We are grateful to the Federal Government for approving these allocations. This marks a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare services for the people of Penang.'
Gooi said the developments would not only strengthen Penang's healthcare system but also significantly improve the quality of medical services for its residents.
He said the state government, through his office, remained committed to enhancing the public healthcare network, closing the gap in treatment accessibility and ensuring quality, equitable and comprehensive services for all.
Gooi added that these initiatives aligned with the Penang2030 vision and the Malaysia Madani framework, which prioritised values of well-being, justice and compassion in the delivery of public services.
Penang Hospital is one of the oldest public hospitals in Malaysia, with a history dating back to the colonial era.
Located in George Town, it is the largest government hospital in the northern region and is a tertiary referral centre for Penang, Kedah, Perlis and northern Perak.
It was established in the 19th century during British rule to serve the growing population in Penang, which was then an important trading hub.
Post-independence, the hospital underwent several modernisation projects, with the addition of new medical departments, specialist units, and upgraded facilities.
Over the decades, it expanded to provide specialist medical care, catering to the increasing healthcare demands.
The hospital also played a crucial role in handling major health crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic where it served as a key treatment centre.

Govt unveils rehab-focused anti-drug plan
Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Shamsul pictured with attendees present at the event. KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government is boosting drug prevention and rehabilitation efforts by establishing Drug Assessment Centres (DAC) and working closely with community-based groups. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah warned of increasing synthetic drug use, including flavoured mushroom vapes, and called for urgent, evidence-based interventions. DACs mark a shift from traditional detention, focusing on medical and psychosocial assessments, in line with amendments to the Drug Dependants Act 1983 that prioritise rehabilitation over punishment. The Cabinet has approved the Anti-Drug Communication Plan 2025–2027 to promote behavioural change, accurate messaging and cross-sector cooperation, alongside the launch of District Community Synergy Committees (JSKD) to strengthen grassroots coordination. Shamsul urged NGOs to embrace digital tools for youth outreach, stressing that drug prevention requires the shared commitment of agencies, families, educators and the wider community. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM40 biliion allocation to implement healthcare reforms
Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 Text Size: Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2. Kuala Lumpur: The Federal Government has allocated RM40 billion under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026 to 2030 to implement wide-ranging reforms in the healthcare sector, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced Thursday. He said the healthcare reform agenda is a vital government initiative to ensure sustainable health financing while expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare services for all Malaysians, which is also aimed at increasing service options for patients without compromising on cost or quality. To strengthen medical supply security, Anwar said domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing would be encouraged, while the use of generic medicines in both the public and private sectors would be significantly increased. 'Pro-health taxes will be expanded from sugar to products such as tobacco, vape and alcohol, not just for revenue but to encourage behavioural change and curb the increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which is increasingly worrying,' he said. Another key objective of the reform, Anwar said, is to reduce the out-of-pocket healthcare expenses borne by citizens. Under the 13MP, more hospitals and clinics - including those in dilapidated condition - will be built or upgraded to improve healthcare delivery nationwide. Major projects slated for development include Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar 2 in Seremban, Hospital Sultanah Aminah 2 in Johor Bahru, the Northern Region Cancer Centre in Sungai Petani, the Sabah Heart Centre at Hospital Queen Elizabeth II in Kota Kinabalu, and the Sarawak Cancer Centre. To address long-standing workforce challenges, the government will also introduce a national framework for health sector talent development. 'This includes initiatives covering pre-service training, licensing, recruitment, placement, and career development, all aimed at retaining and nurturing skilled professionals in the healthcare system,' Anwar said. Anwar also announced that health record management will be strengthened as part of the core strategy for digitising Malaysia's healthcare infrastructure, which will enhance interoperability between healthcare facilities and enable seamless patient data access. The digitisation push will also lay the groundwork for high-impact health analytics powered by artificial intelligence (AI), further enhancing the quality and responsiveness of healthcare services in Malaysia, he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? BAS.MY Medik service to aid mobility-limited passengers in Malaysia
KANGAR: The Transport Ministry is set to launch Medik, a new service under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, designed to assist passengers with limited mobility. Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that operators will provide dedicated vans for wheelchair users and those needing transport to medical facilities. 'The Medik service will be offered at an affordable fare,' Loke said during the SBST Kangar launch, attended by Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli. He highlighted the financial burden faced by patients, particularly dialysis patients who require frequent trips. 'Taking a taxi to and from the centre can cost RM20 to RM30 per trip, which is a heavy burden. With Medik, the van will pick them up from home and take them directly to the treatment centre at a much lower fare,' Loke explained. The Federal government has allocated RM39.7 million over five years to sustain Kangar operations, aiming to improve public transport accessibility. Currently, the service covers nine routes, including a cross-border link to Alor Setar, Kedah. Loke noted a decline in ridership post-pandemic, urging operators to boost promotions. 'Before COVID-19, SBST Kangar recorded 30,000 monthly passengers. Now, it's just 12,071. Operators must engage all community segments to restore pre-pandemic levels,' he said. - Bernama
