Lionel Messi's Major League Soccer-record streak of multi-goal games ended at five on Wednesday as his Inter Miami squad was blanked 3-0 at FC Cincinnati.
The 38-year-old Argentine star forward had scored a brace, two goals, in five consecutive matches for Miami, giving him 16 goals on the season as Inter managed four wins and a draw in the run.
Not since 2012 when he played for Barcelona had Messi netted a brace or more in five consecutive matches.
But Cincinnati kept Miami to only two shots on goal in the contest.
"Clearly today we were outplayed from the beginning of the match," Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said through a translator.
"It was very difficult for us to win the individual duels. Maybe one of the reasons is that physically we come with a very big hustle and bustle and in the long run we end up paying.
"Leo suffered a knock at the end but it ended well."
US 20-year-old midfielder Gerardo Valenzuela opened the scoring for Cincinnati in the 16th minute.
Brazilian striker Evander followed with a goal in the 50th minute and struck again in the 70th to provide all the scoring the hosts needed.
"We didn't play the game we wanted. They put us under pressure all the time, we weren't fresh or lucid and they beat us very well," Mascherano said.
Miami fell to 11-4 with five drawn for 38 points, fifth in the Eastern Conference and eight points adrift of first-place Philadelphia, the overall MLS leader which beat Montreal to stay one point ahead of Cincinnati in the overall MLS standings.
Inter Miami has three games in hand on both clubs but would need to win them all to overtake their rivals for the overall league lead.
"The opponent outplayed us from start to finish," Mascherano said. "The result and the way they beat us obviously worries us. Now we have to rest and think about the next game."
That will come on Saturday when Miami will visit the New York Red Bulls, who got two goals each from Cameroon's Eric Choupo-Moting and Sweden's Emil Forsberg in a 5-3 home win over New England on Wednesday.
De Paul to join Miami
A source close to negotiations told AFP on Wednesday that Inter Miami has agreed on terms with Argentine international Rodrigo De Paul, a midfielder for Atletico Madrid.
The deal is for the next four seasons with De Paul to play the remainder of 2025 in Miami on loan from Atletico Madrid with a subsequent purchase option for Inter worth more than $12 million.
De Paul could play for Miami for the first time on July 30 against Mexican side Atlas in Inter's debut match in the Leagues Cup, a tournament between MLS and Mexican League clubs.
He will leave Europe after four seasons in Madrid to join countryman Messi 11 months before the World Cup to be hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.
Messi has not said if he will play in the World Cup.
De Paul and Messi were teammates on Argentina's 2022 World Cup champions and reuniting them could help entice Messi to sign a new contract with Inter, whose deal with the superstar expires at the end of this year.
The club wants Messi to stay for the 2026 season, in which Inter will open a new stadium in Miami.
DePaul, 31, joins a Miami core that includes Messi, Uruguayan Luis Suarez and Spaniards Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
Charlotte was named host city for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday. This year's all-star matchup will be in Austin, Texas, next Wednesday with the MLS All-Stars facing the Mexican League All-Stars.

South Africa want promising batsmen to show potential on international stage

CAPE TOWN: South Africa's Twenty20 captain Aiden Markram wants his team's promising young batsman to use the opportunity of limited overs tours to Australia and England over the next eight weeks to develop their careers and display their international potential. South Africa have high hopes for powerful teenage slogger Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Dewald Brevis, the prolific 22-year-old run scorer who first competed in the Indian Premier League three years ago, as they continue preparations for next year's T20 World Cup. 'The last thing you want to do is to clip their wings. You sort of want to let them fly and let them do their thing,' Markram told a virtual press conference on Friday as South Africa readied to depart for Australia, where they play three T20 internationals in Darwin and Cairns later this month. 'I think we've seen on various stages around the world now that they are proper X-factor players and that they have taken to international cricket quite easily,' he added. 'So, I don't know if I have too much advice for them, besides the fact that they must keep taking the game on and not be scared of disappointments or failures. 'It's been great to see their progress. They're going to play a massive role moving forward in cricket in South Africa and that's the thing that we're quite excited about,' Markram added. Brevis, a regular in T20 leagues around the world, debuted for South Africa's T20 side against Australia two years ago while Pretorius, 19, debuted in last month's tri series against New Zealand and hosts Zimbabwe, scoring 51 in the final in Harare last weekend. The pair are also in the squad to take on Australia in three One Day Internationals after the T20 series. South Africa then head to England early next month for three ODIs and three T20s. 'For us as a team it'll be about fine tuning a lot of things and preparing for that T20 World Cup, so a great opportunity in Australia and then followed by England and if we can get closer towards another trophy, that'll be good,' Markram told reporters. South Africa were runners-up at the last T20 World Cup in the West Indies one year ago and Markram was the hero of their World Test Championship win over Australia in June. The next T20 World Cup to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka in early 2026.

Pak to take on WI in T20I series

The Pakistan team was in action during a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. Photo: AFP Pakistan are all set to take on West Indies in the eighth bilateral T20I series between the two teams after they first faced each other in April 2011 in the T20 format. The three T20Is, beginning on Thursday, 31 July (1 August, 5am Pakistan time) at the Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium in Florida is the first meeting between the two teams in T20Is since December 2021. The second and third T20I are scheduled to take place on 2 and 3 August at the same venue with the first ball slated to be bowled at 8pm local time (3 and 4 August, 5am Pakistan time). Pakistan will take the field in Lauderhill, a venue that has played host to 12 ODIs and 17 T20Is since May 2010, for the second time after beating Ireland by three wickets in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Overall Pakistan have won 15 of the 21 T20Is played between the two teams with hosts winning three and as many ending in no result. Both the teams will be looking to make amends to their recent most T20I series results after visitors conceded 2-1 to Bangladesh and hosts 5-0 to Australia. Pakistan arrived in Lauderhill on Monday, 28 July and took part in two intensive training sessions. Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Shah Afridi have returned to the T20I squad. Pakistan T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha: "We are really looking forward to playing at this wonderful venue and our time here so far has been exciting. I feel the three T20Is will also be entertaining and as a team we are eagerly looking forward to take the field. "We have a fine blend of youth and experience in our squad and it is highly productive that we are going into yet another T20I series as the build-up towards the T20 World Cup picks up pace. "The West Indies are a formidable T20I side despite the results not going their way recently and I feel we'll have to play our best possible game in order to outfox them in this series." Pakistan T20I squad: Salman Ali Agha (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Hasan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Haris (wicket-keeper), Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan (wicket-keeper), Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Sufyan Moqim. Meanwhile, The West Indies squad is expected to feature one change from the side that played in the recently concluded five-match T20I series against Australia, which they lost 5-0. Veteran all-rounder Andre Russell announced his retirement after playing two matches in the shorter format against Australia, with right-handed batter Keacy Carty set to replace him. West Indies squad for Pakistan T20Is: Brandon King, Evan Lewis, Keacy Carty, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd, Roston Chase, Jewel Andrew, Shai Hope (C), Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Jediah Blades, Matthew Forde The head-to-head record between the two teams heavily favours Pakistan. Out of 21 T20I encounters, Pakistan have won 15 matches, while West Indies have secured just three victories. The remaining three matches ended without a result. This marks Pakistan's third consecutive T20I series, following a 3-0 home series win over Bangladesh in May and a 2-1 series defeat against the same opposition in Bangladesh. Series schedule: 31 July – First T20I; 2 Aug – Second T20I; 3 Aug – Third T20I; 8 Aug – First ODI; 10 Aug – Second ODI; 12 Aug – Third ODI.

United cruise over Bournemouth in EPL friendly

Manchester United made it two wins out of two with a 4-1 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League Summer Series pre-season tournament in Chicago on Wednesday. Goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu, Amad Diallo and teenager Ethan Williams sealed an encouraging result for Ruben Amorim's side at a rainy, windswept Soldier Field. United, who had opened their tour with a 2-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday, were always in control against the Cherries, taking the lead after just eight minutes through Hojlund. Dorgu curled in an inviting cross from the left flank and Denmark international team-mate Hojlund timed his run and jump to perfection to glance a header past Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. Dorgu then doubled United's lead in the 25th minute, latching on to a clever, lofted quick free-kick from Mason Mount, muscling his way into the area and sliding a cool finish beneath the advancing Petrovic. Diallo bundled in United's third in the 53rd minute before Amorim made nine changes with 20 minutes to go. Substitute Williams needed just two minutes to make an impact curling a low finish into the bottom corner to put United 4-0 up. The only blemish on United's performance came with an 88th-minute own goal from Matthijs de Ligt. In Wednesday's other Premier League friendly in Chicago, West Ham came from behind to beat former manager David Moyes's Everton 2-1. Idrissa Gueye put Everton 1-0 up after 17 minutes before West Ham recovered to equalise through Brazilian international Lucas Paqueta just before half-time. Germany international Niclas Fullkrug's 64th-minute strike sealed the Hammers' win. The result was another disappointing pre-season setback for Everton, who were soundly beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth on Saturday. "I'm not overly concerned because I don't have the players which I need and what I want," Everton boss Moyes said afterward. "We knew before we came (to the US) we were going to be really up against it. So, it was never going to be us coming here and winning." "At the moment we're not ready to perform well enough in this tournament, and we're not ready to start the Premier League season." The four-team competition concludes in Atlanta on Sunday, with United facing Everton and West Ham taking on Bournemouth.
