Sabah assembly to sit July 7–8 amid dissolution speculation

Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Legislative Assembly will convene for a two-day sitting on July 7 and 8, possibly its last before a widely speculated early dissolution. According to sources from the Chief Minister's Office, the session is officially listed as the second meeting of the fifth term of the 16th Assembly.

Rumours are swirling that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor may dissolve the assembly in the third week of July, following the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's birthday celebration on June 21. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Rafizi Ramli appears set to follow through with his decision to resign as economy minister, despite Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressing hope that he and another minister who recently quit the Cabinet would reconsider their decisions. In a post on X today, Rafizi reflected on his last day at the ministry, thanking his team of policy officers for their efforts in implementing economic initiatives. However, Anwar said yesterday that while he had received the leave applications and resignation letters from the duo, he had only approved their applications to go on leave. Rafizi is on leave until June 16 while Nik Nazmi's leave ends on July 3. Malaysia condemns Israeli strikes on Iran, urges global pressure to halt aggression

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has called on Israel's partners, especially those with influence and leverage, to apply maximum pressure to halt further aggression in the wake of Israeli military strikes on Iran. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a Facebook post today, strongly condemned the attack, including targeted strikes that have killed senior Iranian leaders, describing it as a grave and reckless act that risks further destabilising the fragile region. It also comes amid renewed scrutiny of Israel's conduct in Gaza and mounting political pressure on (Israeli Prime Minister) Benjamin Netanyahu. 'The international community must not enable actions that sabotage diplomacy and endanger global peace,' said Anwar. Media reports said that the Israeli regime has carried out strikes in and near the Iranian capital, Tehran, as well as other cities in Iran. Name the leasers, don't point fingers, Loke tells bus group

(Bernama pic) SHAH ALAM: Transport minister Loke Siew Fook today hit back at a bus operators' association for blaming the ministry over the widespread illegal leasing of express and tour bus permits. He said the association should have reported the issue or disclosed to the authorities the list of operators involved in license leasing. Advertisement 'We need evidence. The association should have helped us by giving us or publicising the list of companies (involved in such leasing),' he told reporters after attending the launch of the speed limiter device initiative for commercial vehicles today. His comments come after the Malaysian Bumiputera Bus Operators' Association (PPBBM) claimed that permit leasing had been ongoing for years, but only came under the spotlight after the accident that killed 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris. PPBBM reportedly said that permit leasing could cost as little as RM500 a month. Lokes said it was unfair to point fingers at his ministry, given that permit leasing was a private arrangement between permit holders and third parties. 'I have no problem being the 'bad guy' – just give me the list and I'll suspend them immediately,' he said. On a separate matter, Loke said the transport ministry was considering a complete overhaul of the Kejara demerit system, calling it a 'failure'. 'A major overhaul is needed because merit marks are only deducted after summonses are paid. The problem is that many people do not pay their summonses,' he said. On the mandatory installation of dashboard cameras, Loke said the government must engage with industry players to ensure a balanced policy approach. 'We also need to consider, for example, bus fares to ensure that operators are able to meet all of the requirements. 'Everything will be discussed.
