The 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee is over, and we have a winner who overcame a rough late-bee error to win it all.
Faizan Zaki, a 13-year-old from Allen, Texas, finished as a runner-up last year and was one of the three spellers left on Thursday when he was given "commelina." He immediately started spelling it wrong and told head judge Mary Brooks to ring the bell for an incorrect answer.
You can see that moment below, but he got through to spell the final word correct: éclaircissement, which he nailed right away without asking for language origin or to be used in a sentence.

The result? A win and his reaction was simply the best:
No, it wasn't kamaaina, but a Mogollon (Shourav Dasari reference in 2015) attempt gone wrong for Faizan Zaki when he tried to spell "commelina" because he said "kam-" but then he realized he couldn't edit his answer 🙃 #spellingbee (R18)Mogolloned Cupar a round after 🫠 pic.twitter.com/VK38WA5lAJ

You have to love it. He fell right to the ground in pure elation. And why did he spell words quickly? Per the Associated Press:
Faizan had a more nuanced explanation: After not preparing for the spell-off last year, he overcorrected, emphasizing speed during his study sessions.
Congrats to Faizan, who needed four tries to get the victory. Here he is talking about his preparation, in which he talked to CNN about how he focused on the vocabulary and the spell-off at the end:

What a win! And we'll leave it off with the photo of Zaki collapsed on stage, which sums it all up:
Awesome.

Hamas responds to US plan for Gaza ceasefire, says proposal aimed at ‘permanent ceasefire'

Hamas says that it has responded to a ceasefire plan put forward by President Trump's envoy on Gaza, but did not make clear what its exact response was. In a statement Saturday, Hamas said that its 'proposal' to the mediators – Qatar and Egypt — 'aims to achieve a permanent ceasefire, a comprehensive withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and ensure the flow of aid to our people and our families in the Gaza Strip.' 'As part of this agreement, ten living Israeli prisoners held by the resistance will be released, in addition to the return of eighteen bodies, in exchange for an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners,' the statement said. The US-backed and Israel-approved proposal seen by CNN on Friday includes Hamas releasing 10 Israeli hostages and 18 deceased hostages in exchange for 125 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences and 1,111 Gazans detained since the war began. Negotiations toward a permanent ceasefire would begin immediately on the first day of the 60-day truce, according to the proposal. The terms of the agreement would also allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza 'immediately' and be distributed 'through agreed upon channels,' including the United Nations and the Red Crescent, according to the proposal. But the draft agreement contained no intrinsic guarantee of a permanent end to the war, a key Hamas demand, nor assurances that the ceasefire will be extended as long as negotiations continue. Instead, it said that US President Donald Trump is 'committed to working to ensure that good faith negotiations continue until a final agreement is reached.' Hamas had initially signaled reluctance to accept the terms of the deal. Bassem Naim, a member of the Hamas political bureau, said on Facebook Thursday that the framework did 'not respond to any of our people's demands' but that discussions were underway, nonetheless. This is a developing story and will be updated. CNN's Dana Karni, Alex Marquardt, Kylie Atwood, Jeremy Diamond and Oren Liebermann contributed to this report.

Inter Milan mourning before Champions League final after death of former club president Pellegrini

Associated Press MILAN (AP) — Former Inter Milan club president Ernesto Pellegrini has died on the day the team plays the Champions League final. He was 84. 'Pellegrini has left us. For 11 years he led Inter with wisdom, honor and determination, leaving an indelible imprint in the history of our club,' Inter said on its website on Saturday, hours before the team plays Paris Saint-Germain to be European champion. Pellegrini was born in Milan in 1940. Italian media reported he suffered from a lung infection. Pellegrini, who made his money in catering and services, was the 17th president of the club from 1984-95. Inter won Serie A in 1989 and twice won the UEFA Cup during his time. He brought German players Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Matthäus, Andreas Brehme, and Jürgen Klinsmann to the team, before selling his shares in the club to Massimo Moratti in 1995. ___ AP soccer: in this topic
