KUALA LUMPUR: The retail prices of RON97 petrol and diesel in Peninsular Malaysia have been lowered by three sen, effective from July 3 to 9.
RON97 is now priced at RM3.18 per litre, while diesel costs RM2.85 per litre.
The Ministry of Finance confirmed in a statement that the price of RON95 petrol remains steady at RM2.05 per litre.
Meanwhile, diesel prices in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan stay unchanged at RM2.15 per litre.
The adjustments follow the weekly retail pricing mechanism for petroleum products, calculated using the Automatic Pricing Mechanism formula.
The ministry stated, 'The government continues to monitor market trends and adjust the retail prices of RON97 and diesel in line with global oil price movements, while supporting price stability.'
Additionally, the government assured that it will implement necessary measures to protect public welfare amid fluctuating fuel prices.

Hotel rate hikes unjustified by SST revision says MoF

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has dismissed claims that the recent Sales and Service Tax (SST) adjustments justify hotel room rate increases. The ministry confirmed that the updated tax structure, effective July 1, does not alter service tax rates for hotel stays or food and beverages served on premises. The MoF acknowledged that while the SST expansion now includes commercial property rentals and sales tax on select premium food items, these changes should not lead to the 10 to 15 per cent cost surge cited by some hotel operators. 'The indirect effects of SST adjustments are insufficient to warrant such steep price hikes,' the ministry stated in response to industry concerns. Hotel associations had earlier warned of impending rate increases, attributing them to the revised tax framework. However, the MoF cautioned that unjustified price adjustments would be scrutinised. 'If hotels raise rates by 15 per cent citing SST, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will assess whether profiteering is involved,' it added. The government emphasised its commitment to preventing unreasonable price surges, ensuring consumers are not burdened by disproportionate cost escalations.

Ringgit opens marginally higher vs US dollar

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened marginally higher against the US dollar amidst improving United States (US) economic data, which supported the greenback, said an analyst. At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2125/2280 against the greenback, from Thursday's close of 4.2195/2255. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit remains well-supported, underpinned by the government's commitment to ongoing fiscal reforms such as the sales and service tax (SST) and RON95 subsidies rationalisation. 'The foreign interest in Malaysian Government Securities (MGS) and Government Investment Issue (GII) has also been quite positive,' he told Bernama. On the dollar performance, Mohd Afzanizam said the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose 0.42 per cent to 97.18 points as the latest jobs report indicates a resilient US labour market. He said the US economy looks resilient, which has led to lower expectations for an interest cut by the US Federal Reserve (Fed). 'The two-year US Treasury note yielded 10 basis points higher to 3.88 per cent,' he told Bernama. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It advanced against the Japanese yen to 2.9098/9207 from 2.9333/9376, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7568/7780 from 5.7621/7703, and rose against the euro to 4.9577/9759 from 4.9756/9827 yesterday. The local note also traded higher against its ASEAN counterparts. It improved vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3057/3182 from 3.3146/3196, went up against the Thai baht to 12.9835/13.0421 from 13.0211/0457, and strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.48/7.52 from 7.50/7.51. However, it was almost flat against the Indonesian rupiah at 260.0/261.1 from 260.5/261.0 at yesterday's close. - Bernama
