Middleburg man prepares to sue deputies over alleged missing cash
Action News Jax investigates a Middleburg man's claim that deputies took $4,000 from him during an arrest.
Willie Davis Jr. was arrested last September in Orange Park.
According to the arrest report, Davis Jr. told deputies he stopped at the food truck to get food and left the parking lot.
Deputies stated they saw Davis Jr. hit a black Mercedes as he left that parking lot, ripping off the entire front bumper of the vehicle.
When the deputy pulled Davis, Jr. over and checked his car, the report said the deputy found fresh black paint markings, and that Davis Jr. was under the influence of alcohol.
Action News Jax learned the case was dropped due to a lack of evidence.

At the time of his arrest, the report said Davis Jr. had $4,000 in cash on him, which two deputies counted twice.
'Then, of course, when he got to the jail, the amount that they deposited, by the actual jail records, they only gave the jailer $2,900,' said Daniel Faherty, Davis Jr.'s attorney.
Faherty said his client had $6,900 on him that night.
'Because of his business, because of other family and friends that had repaid him in cash for things that he had put on his credit card for them,' said Faherty. 'He had just sold a set of wheels.'

Faherty said Davis Jr. is missing $4,000 and alleges deputies targeted him and took the cash.
'He believes that the deputies on the scene saw him take a large sum of cash out of his pocket that he had on his person to buy his food,' said Faherty.

They have sent notices to the Clay County Sheriff's Office stating their intent to sue.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office said it will not comment on this due to pending litigation. A spokesperson did confirm that there is an active internal affairs investigation into the complaint filed by Davis, Jr.

Motorcyclist killed in crash on Mass. highway lost control, veered into oncoming traffic, DA says
A man was killed in a crash on a Massachusetts highway on Thursday when he lost control of his motorcycle and veered into oncoming traffic, authorities announced Friday. Emergency officials responding to a report of a crash in the area of 2309 Cranberry Highway in Wareham shortly before 5 p.m. found two motorcycles resting on their side and a damaged SUV at the scene, according to the Plymouth District Attorney's Office and Wareham police. Witnesses told investigators that 49-year-old Matthew Burns, of South Attleboro, lost control of his motorcycle, veered into the southbound lane, and was hit by a white Mercedes GLC300. Burns, who was unresponsive when first responders arrived at the scene, was pronounced dead after efforts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful, officials said. Burns was riding with four other motorcyclists at the time of the crash, one of whom suffered minor injuries. Massachusetts State Police spoke with the driver of the Mercedes, who said she noted several motorcycle operators traveling in the opposite direction and that one lost control while attempting to navigate a bend in the highway, according to the DA's office. The woman also told investigators that 'she could not avoid crashing into the motorcycle or the operator,' the DA's office added. An investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Off-duty Anderson police officer charged after Indy neighborhood shootout
The off-duty Anderson police officer involved in an early morning shootout in an east-side Indianapolis neighborhood has been charged by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. Officer Maurice Magee, 34, is charged with two counts of criminal recklessness for his alleged role in the 600 block of Woodruff Place West Drive shooting on May 19. Magee, who lives in Indianapolis, began searching the area after reporting a vehicle stolen. According to formal charging documents, Magee reported a Dodge Challenger stolen to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department at 5:14 a.m. The vehicle belonged to Magee's uncle, but Magee pays for and frequently drives it, according to court documents filed in the case. The car was located by Magee using an Apple AirTag and was a little over 9 miles from where Magee lived, according to court documents. Around 4 a.m., Magee got up to let his dog out and talk to his father-in-law when he noticed the Dodge Challenger was gone. He went outside and noticed glass in the driveway where the car had been sitting. Court records state he then woke his girlfriend up and told her to call the police. He took her black Mercedes-AMG to the Woodruff Place neighborhood, and his brother-in-law followed in a gray Dodge 2500 Ram pickup. "Law enforcement officers should understand the proper and safe ways for reporting a crime," said Prosecutor Ryan Mears. "The allegations in the probable cause affidavit could have been avoided if the defendant had simply allowed local police to conduct an investigation. Instead, his alleged actions unnecessarily jeopardized the safety of the residents of Woodruff Place." Just after sunrise, residents in the area who were getting ready for work, and their kids ready for school, heard vehicles revving and a collision followed by gunfire in front of their homes. Witnesses saw Magee and a man detectives believed to be his brother-in-law carrying firearms coming down the street before the shooting happened between them and two suspects. Magee told detectives he was armed with an AR-15 rifle and started yelling at the suspects in his car to stop. Detectives said the pickup and the Challenger collided before the shooting, resulting in the stolen car ramming into a neighbor's fence on a hill. The men in the Challenger then ran behind the house where they crashed and escaped. They haven't been identified or found. In an interview with detectives, the prosecutor's office said, Magee initially said he did not fire his weapon. He said the suspects got out of the wrecked car and started shooting at him. According to a probable cause affidavit for his arrest, he said he was going to aim and then dove to the ground. He further stated that he does not remember firing and was sure he did not. He did say his brother-in-law fired his rifle, though. Both Magee's and his brother-in-law's firearms were collected for forensic testing. Multiple shell casings were collected from the crime scene and surrounding properties, including a fired bullet that traveled through an 8-year-old's bedroom window and a wall before getting lodged in a bathroom wall. Ballistic comparisons between the firearms collected and the shell casings found at the scene revealed that the man with Magee did not fire his weapon during the shooting. It was determined that at least one of the shell casings had been fired by Magee's rifle. In a statement to IndyStar, Anderson Police said they were notified of Magee's arrest, and he remains on administrative leave. They will reevaluate his position once they receive all the charging information from Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and will release more details as they become available. Magee has been with the department for two years. Magee was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail on June 6, 2025. His bond is set for $30,000. Accused Neptune Beach porch pirate, car burglar arrested
A woman is facing multiple theft charges after Neptune Beach police said she broke into a car and stole packages from a porch. Kaitlyn Thurston, 31, remained in Duval County jail Friday morning after being arrested Thursday. Neptune Beach police they received a call Sunday from a resident reporting a car burglary. Later in the day, another resident reported packages were stolen from a nearby porch. Another person said the person tried to steal a bike from their home, but they were caught on surveillance video, police said. Police arrested Thurston at her home.
