Meet the top referee taking charge of his first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final

Cawley has come to the fore this year having officiated at a number of important matches but on Sunday week will see him face his biggest test to date.
A member of the progressive Sarsfields club in Kildare, Cawley has earned a reputation as a diligent, capable whistler who allows play to flow but is quick to intercede when rough play ensues.
He took charge of the All-Ireland 2024 Senior Club Championship Final and has handled a raft of inter-county Allianz League and Championship fixtures since then.
Next Sunday's All-Ireland decider will be his 30th Championship game and will see him get another feather in his cap.
This year's provincial and All-Ireland Championships saw the busy Cawley take charge of several games involving Ulster teams.
These included the meeting of Derry and Donegal, the Ulster Final featuring Armagh against Donegal and the Louth v Monaghan, Dublin v Derry, and the All-Ireland Quarter–Final between Kerry and Armagh.
In the Allianz League, he refereed matches between Kerry and Donegal, Galway and Tyrone, as well as Down and Westmeath.
His umpires on Sunday next will be Dave Coady and Lee Moore (both from Ballykelly), Eoghan Fitzpatrick (Nurney) and Johnny Farrell (Rathangan).
His line umpires on the day will be Monaghan's Martin McNally and Meath's David Coldrick.
Cawley's appointment for the All-Ireland Football Final is another significant boost for refereeing in the country as a whole particularly as the whistlers have been strongly in the spotlight because of their administration of the new rules which have transformed Gaelic football as we know it to a certain extent.

Pressley says Dundee fans right to 'vent' but wants trust and perspective

Dundee boss Steven Pressley admits fans are right to be unhappy about the dismal results from the start of his time in charge – but wants them to have patience and perspective. The manager, who was a surprise choice to replace Tony Docherty, has begun his reign with back-to-back 1-0 defeats, against Championship side Airdrie and League One's Alloa Athletic in the Premier Sports Cup. The Dark Blues now face Bonnyrigg Rose on Tuesday and Montrose on Saturday, knowing they have no chance of progress in the competition but aiming to lift the mood around the club. 'Like any manager after a result like that, I'm disappointed,' Pressley said when asked about Saturday's defeat to Alloa. 'Although we're certainly in the rebuild stage, I still think with the group of players that we had out that we have to do better. 'I take full responsibility for that. 'But I am also one that tries to bring context and perspective to everything. I understand where we are and we've got so much work to do.' Pressley is keen to add new players to his squad sooner rather than later, and aims to improve those he has, but he admits that the rebuild is no small task. 'If I'm being honest, it's probably a bigger challenge than I envisaged,' he said. 'I understand that now and we'll work tirelessly hard to try and put things right. 'But it's not going to happen overnight.' He is eyeing a big improvement between now and the first Premiership match on August 3. 'Our real objective now is to get that momentum and really focus on how we can be prepared for the Hibernian game,' he said. 'We have to start the season in the right fashion and try to gain that momentum. 'It takes time and the players have been receptive and have been working very, very hard. 'But again, perspective: where we are in the process, it's going to take time. 'That's evident but I think we have to be in a place where we can be highly competitive in the Hibernian game. 'That's important, that we can go into that game believing we can get a result.' Patience is rare in football and there have been plenty of Dundee supporters who were unhappy with Pressley's appointment to begin with, as others also voice their displeasure about the rocky start. Asked for a message to reassure fans, the manager said they were within their rights to be unhappy but that trust in the process would help. 'We are trying at present to find the solutions,' he said. 'And to show, I know it's difficult at time, to show an element of trust in us that we will get there because it is very early. 'But I'm also a realist. I understand that any adverse results bring negativity. 'That's how football is and I'm never going to change that. 'The message to supporters isn't that they shouldn't vent that. That's normal. 'It's just to understand and have some perspective as to where we are, moving forward.' Liverpool youngster rated highly by Arne Slot closes in on new long-term deal - after making last impression on Reds boss

Liverpool youngster James McConnell is close to signing a new long-term deal at the club and going out on loan for the season. The 20-year-old midfielder, who played several times for the first team last year and made a lasting impression on boss Arne Slot, is missing from the pre-season tour of Asia with a minor injury. It is understood that the pain is just a knock suffered in training and he will have treatment on it this week — with the decision made not to travel to Hong Kong or Japan due to the fact the flight could exacerbate symptoms. He should be fine again in around a week. McConnell has interest from Ipswich, West Brom and Derby in the Championship for a loan deal, while German Bundesliga clubs have also posted their desire to sign him. Some of those teams have proposed an option to buy clause in the deal but Liverpool are believed to not want to sell McConnell as Slot is a big fan. In January, the Dutch manager blocked McConnell's exit as he saw him as part of his plans after shining in a Champions League game away at PSV Eindhoven. The Reds have reached an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt over the signing of Hugo Ekitike McConnell joined the club from Sunderland as a teenager and has played as a No 6 since breaking into the first-team picture. Meanwhile, Liverpool have struck a deal to sign highly-rated striker Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth up to £79million. The Reds had been locked in negotiations with the German side after poaching Newcastle's top target. Ekitike only wanted Liverpool and is set to complete a medical in the coming days. The package is a £69m base fee plus £10m in add-ons which are based on team and player performance. The Frenchman has joined on a six-year deal and he will undergo his medical on Tuesday.

A much-needed fresh start for Ferguson?

When an 18-year-old Evan Ferguson scored his first professional hat-trick in September 2023 it appeared he was destined to join the Premier League's Irishman scored with three of his four shots in Brighton's 3-1 win over Newcastle to earn effusive praise. Alan Shearer labelled him a "special talent" while another goalscoring great Ian Wright highlighted his exceptional movement during his Match of the Day analysis that treble took his Premier League total to 10 goals and only three players have ever bettered that tally prior to their 19th birthday; one was former Everton poacher Francis Jeffers and the other two rank among England's finest ever forwards: But since that eye-catching moment the now 20-year-old has netted only three more times in 44 top-flight appearances and last season he mustered just three shots on target, scoring once: Ferguson's notable decline has been put down to injuries, a loss of confidence and the form of others. The signing of Greek forwards Charalampos Kostoulas and Stefanos Tzimas has pushed him further down the pecking order on the south there is still plenty of time for him to fulfil his undoubted potential and a move to Roma to play under one of Europe's most prized coaches in Gian Piero Gasperini could be just the tonic. The Italian tactician got a tune out of strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Mateo Retegui at his former club Atalanta, and the 67-year-old has a proven track record of developing young players.
