Star of HBO's Chimp Crazy sentenced to nearly four years in prison
Tonia Haddix, 56, was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release after her 46-month prison sentence ends.
Haddix, who ran a primate facility the St Louis suburb of Festus, pleaded guilty in March to two counts of perjury and one of obstructing justice and was sentenced on Thursday.
Nearly a decade ago, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) rights group sued, saying she was keeping several chimps 'confined in cramped, virtually barren enclosures' at the now-defunct Missouri Primate Foundation facility.
Among the chimps was Tonka, who appeared in the 1997 movies Buddy and George of the Jungle. Actor Alan Cumming, who starred in Buddy alongside Tonka, also begged for the primate to be moved.
Haddix signed a consent decree in 2020 agreeing to send four of the chimpanzees to a Florida sanctuary. The order allowed her to keep three others, including Tonka, at a facility she was to build.
But after a judge found that was not complying with the agreement, authorities arrived in 2021 and removed the remaining chimps, except for Tonka. Haddix claimed Tonka had died and that she had cremated the remains, according to court records.
'I wanted to keep trying to save Tonka if l could. But then he just died on his own, so there was no saving him,' she said, according to court records.
But Tonka was alive. In 2022, Peta removed him from a cage in the basement of her home in Sunrise Beach, Missouri.
Haddix told the St Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper in 2022 that she lied to protect Tonka from 'the evil clutches of Peta'. She also admitted to events shown in the third episode of Chimp Crazy last year, saying: 'Tonka was literally on the run with me.'
Just last month, investigators found another chimp locked up in the basement of her home in Sunrise Beach in violation of court orders, documents in the case said. She was arrested, and her bond revoked.
'Defendant has shown no remorse for her criminal conduct,' prosecutors wrote.
Her lawyer, Justin Gelfand, asked for mercy in court filings, saying she suffered abuse as a child and in rocky marriages as an adult.

TV bosses ask Londoners to star in upcoming Harry Potter series with filming to start at end of month in London
THE upcoming Harry Potter TV series is about to start shooting in the capital – but it's not just the stars who will be involved in filming. We've been told Network Rail staff have been approached to appear as extras when the HBO show starts filming scenes featuring the Hogwarts Express locomotive. 7 The scenes will be shot from August 23 to 25, with staff receiving chances to get their five minutes of fame on screen in the series. A source said: 'The magic of Harry Potter is alive in London and bosses want to help people's dreams come true. They've called out for Network Rail staff to appear as extras in scenes which will be filmed at a station later this month. 'It's been really successful and they have had loads of interest from people who work as conductors and controllers who are keen to get their faces on screen. 'This telly series is a surefire mega-hit so it's not surprising their call-out has proved massively popular. "Bosses at HBO know there's nothing better than having real people in on the action as it will all look totally natural.' And if they are going for this realistic look, I'll be expecting the Hogwarts Express to be delayed on the first day of filming because the wrong kind of summer heat has ruined the train tracks. Oh and the air-conditioning definitely won't be working. A last-minute alteration on platform 9¾ wouldn't appear too much of a stretch either. Show makers HBO previously confirmed they will use an old steam train that was rescued from a scrap heap in Barry Island in Wales as the magical locomotive. The train is currently green, but bosses are staying tight-lipped about whether they will repaint it to match the locomotive seen in the hit Noughties films, which are based on JK Rowling's best-selling books. The first series is expected to run for eight episodes and has been scripted from the first book, Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone. Rising star JK's debut novel was originally released in 1997, while the blockbuster film came out four years later in 2001. The films turned Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint into household names thanks to their portrayals of young wizard Harry and his pals Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. This time around rising star Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Alastair Stout is taking on Ron and Arabella Stanton is in place as Hermione. Give it a year or so and they will be some of the most recognised young stars in the country. OZZY WAS MY BLUD BROTHER YUNGBLUD has opened up about the death of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne. The pair became close pals over the past few years, with the rapper – real name Dominic Harrison – doing a cameo at Ozzy and Black Sabbath's Back To The Beginning show at Villa Park in Birmingham last month, days before the rock legend passed. Yungblud, who coverd Black Sabbath's Changes at the gig, said: 'I thought Ozzy had another five albums in him. And then he did the show and then he died. 'I just love him and right till the end he supported me. He taught me self-belief and I'm going to take his spirit and make sure everybody knows who Ozzy was.' NELLY FURTADO looked to have taken inspiration from her Noughties hit I'm Like A Bird when she took to the stage at Boardmasters in green winged sleeves. The American star performed some of her best-loved hits, including Say It Right and Maneater, at the festival headlined by The Prodigy. 7 Raye, Central Cee and Rizzle Kicks were also on the bill at the surfing and event, which takes place across the gorgeous Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach in Cornwall. Katy B was a surprise guest for Nelly at the show and the pair's duet of I'm Like A Bird went down a storm with fans at the festival. Nelly certainly didn't need those wings to rise any higher. Perrie's fringe festival PERRIE EDWARDS strikes gold with her fans by hitting the stage in a shiny tassled outfit. The former Little Mix singer played Ascot Racecourse, where she blasted out songs for the adoring crowd. The audience seemed to love her performance as much as I love the cool black number, adorned with gold tassels. She sang tunes including her former band's classic 2016 single Shout Out To My Ex. After her brilliant show, Perrie wrote on Instagram yesterday: 'Last night was magic.' Her Little Mix bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock also performed this weekend with a set at Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall. Perrie, who is engaged to former Liverpool footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, released her first solo tunes last year, and is set to release her debut album this year. She has also landed a £300,000 deal with beauty giant L'Oreal's skincare brand CeraVe. Things are certainly looking pretty for Perrie. KYLIE TO GET MORE A-TENSION KYLIE MINOGUE is on the cusp of releasing a new album . . . but there's a twist. Rather than it being her third studio release in three years, the new record will be a live collection – which was made during her Tension world tour, which ends on August 26 in Mexico. It will mark the end of this era of Kylie's music, which has seen her finally crack America with mega-hit Padam Padam and dominate the airwaves with hit after hit. A source said: 'Kylie has quietly recorded her Tension Tour for a live album. 'The record will be announced in the coming weeks and mark the end of the Tension era.' The insider added: 'The album and Tension II both surpassed all expectations for Kylie. She is on top of the world.' THE White Isle comes to the Cotswolds this weekend with Reserve by Warner Hotels bringing back its famous Ibiza Sunsets Weekend. The event at Heythrop Park will have sets from Take That's Howard Donald, along with DJ Danny Rampling. Warner's epic Ibiza In Symphony also returns. See MODEL ROMANCE FOR CAIT CAITY BASER has revealed she has secretly fallen in love with a male model after meeting him on a video shoot. The Friendly Sex singer revealed she is head over heels for the mystery man and teased that they have discussed marriage. 7 Cait said: 'I fell in love with a man who is so safe and so secure. 'I met him on a video shoot. My first opinion of him was, wow, gorgeous, terrifying also because he is so gorgeous. 'We live together. He's my best friend. I love him.' And Caity, whose romance has inspired her EP There, I Said It, out on August 22, explained that settling down with him has calmed her down. She told the We Need To Talk podcast: 'For my whole life, I feel like I've just been on this treadmill of fight or flight emotionally. And then I met my boyfriend and I just feel so at peace. I feel so calm.' DEMI POPS UP DEMI LOVATO is going back to her dance pop roots for her upcoming ninth studio album. I can exclusively reveal her as-yet-untitled record, her first since 2022's Holy Fvck, will be out in October. The album's lead single Fast was released earlier this month but I'm told it has a more electronic sound than a lot of the record. A source said: 'Demi's album comes out in October and it's really good – she's excelled herself. 'Demi is in such a good place right now and it really shows in her art. Fast is more EDM than the rest of the album. 'Of course there are a few experimental elements but there is also Demi's classic pop sound in there too. One track called Kiss is basically Fast's racy sister. It goes hard.' My insider added: 'The music is worlds away from her last album. The rock era was fun but it's over.' It's been an amazing year so far for Demi, who married her boyfriend, singer Jordan Lutes, back in May. And now it's only getting more exciting for her. We can't wait to hear the album.

The unpopular plot that led to the axing of And Just Like That
And just like that… the reboot of HBO's iconic Sex and the City is coming to an end after just three seasons. The series finale of And Just Like That... will air on Thursday, August 14, marking the end of actress Sarah Jessica Parker's journey as Carrie Bradshaw. The announcement from showrunner Michael Patrick King came as a shock to viewers, despite their complaints AJLT had 'ruined' the once-beloved characters from the original Sex and the City, and critics calling it 'the worst show on television.' The reboot – which premiered in 2021 – saw Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) cheat on husband Steve Brady with non-binary comic Che Diaz, Carrie bizarrely claim 'love of her life' Mr. Big was a 'mistake' and rekindle her romance with ex flame Aidan Shaw, and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) stumble through raising non-binary child Rock and her daughter Lily's tryst with a ballet dancer in a polycule. And much to the disappointment of viewers, Kim Cattrall notably did not return for the series as fan-favorite Samantha Jones after a decade of bad blood with her castmates. Not to mention this season's confusing plot hole in which writers seemingly forgot Lisa Todd Wexley's (Nicole Ari Parker) father had died before season one, only to come back to life in season two and die for a second time in season three. Now, as multiple insiders have revealed to the Daily Mail, AJLT's glaring issues had ultimately become impossible for production to ignore – despite their best efforts to see the show through to its rightful end. An insider told the Daily Mail: 'HBO was happy to ride with the show for a few more years. 'Everyone was indebted to Sarah [Jessica Parker] and wanted the story she wanted to be told to go to completion. Decision makers felt like they owed it to Sarah and the rest of the cast and crew.' According to a report from independent TV tracker Samba TV, just 429,000 households streamed the season three premiere in the four days after its May 29 debut – a seven percent decline from the season two premiere. That's compared to the 1.1 million households who watched the AJLT series premiere four years ago. Fans who once loved asking the question, 'Are you a Carrie, Miranda, Samantha or Charlotte?' had now begun to feel that the legacy of Sex and the City was getting damaged by the reboot's tamer storylines. A second insider told the Daily Mail: 'Sex and the City is about women talking about dating men, their penis sizes and what the sex was like. 'Of course, they're getting older, but it's not like you don't still have sex with men and talk about their penises. People weren't connecting with the show.' Upon its premiere in 2021, AJLT introduced a host of new side characters – namely women of color to offset the original show's all-white main cast: Lisa Todd Wexley, Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury) and Dr. Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman). But it was Miranda's cringeworthy relationship with Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) throughout seasons one and two that was the ultimate nail in the coffin, insiders said. Che, a newcomer to the spin-off series who introduced themselves as a 'queer non-binary Mexican Irish diva,' struck up a relationship with Miranda after she abandoned her marriage to Steve. The character was accused of being the 'worst' on the series, with some viewers even claiming the character was '[setting] back non-binary representation 70 years.' Ramirez, a non-binary actor who uses they/them pronouns, was dropped from AJLT ahead of the third season. Shortly after their firing, Ramirez claimed that their vocal support for Palestine had cost them the role. At the time, a source close to the show ridiculed the suggestion to the Daily Mail, claiming Ramirez's head had been 'on the chopping block since last season' because their character 'held no value anymore' and was 'annoying.' This season saw Miranda embark on her newfound life as a single queer woman dating in New York City – including a brief sexual encounter with virgin nun Mary, played by Rosie O'Donnell, in the season three premiere. Not only was Mary's single-episode arc declared 'cringe and dumb' online, but sources said it offered very little development for Miranda's character and the show overall. The second insider added: 'Cynthia's plot continued to destroy the show. It sucked. Let's be honest, most people didn't watch after that first episode.' In the penultimate episode, which aired on August 7, it's hinted that Carrie may not have her happy ending after all. She officially called it quits with on-again off-again boyfriend Aidan (John Corbett) after his trust issues and family drama got in the way of their relationship, and her fling neighbor Duncan (Jonathan Cake) ended with him leaving New York. While the news of next week's series finale came as a surprise to viewers, Parker and King wanted to give the cast and crew 'enough warning' about AJLT's ending so they wouldn't be left high and dry, according to the first insider. They said: 'They delayed the announcement of ending the show because they wanted fans to see this season through to see if it worked 'Michael and Sarah tested the waters, and made the decision before there was a time of no turning back, because the rest of the cast and crew needed to know and not be left out in the dark. 'They tried, and now it's over. Time to celebrate and remember the good times.'

Survivor's Jeff Probst drops bombshell on White Lotus cameo after creator's surprise return to competition show
Survivor host and executive producer Jeff Probst has revealed whether he'll make a cameo in Mike White's hit HBO series The White Lotus. The 63-year-old TV presenter recently caused a stir when he announced that White Lotus creator Mike, 55 — who was Survivor's season 37 runner-up — will reappear on season 50 next spring. In the past, the California-bred filmmaker has given his Survivor co-stars small roles on the stirring drama. As for Jeff, he wants no parts, telling The Hollywood Reporter that fans should not expect to see him on HBO. 'No, Mike should never put me on White Lotus. I really love the cameos and how he uses people. And I think that, too, speaks to Mike as a person,' he said to the outlet. Producers raised eyebrows in May when it was announced that The White Lotus creator Mike was recast for season 50 after he came in second place on season 37 in 2018 And the beloved host explained exactly why he's excited for Mike's return. 'He's arguably the single best storyteller we've ever had on Survivor,' he told the outlet. 'Mike is one of the most peculiar and loving people I've ever met. He's so authentic. He does exactly what he wants on his terms, and the results clearly speak for themselves,' he added. Unlike viewers and Hollywood's A-listers, Jeff said he understands why Mike wanted to join the Survivor cast again, despite his massive success. 'I think that's part of why he does it — he's out there in a real incubator of human behavior where you never know what's going to happen, but what you do know is that if you show up to play Survivor, you can study it,' he reasoned. He noted, 'And when you watch White Lotus, what are you watching? You're watching human behavior all day. 'I think that's part of the reason Mike is back, and if you don't understand that, maybe you're asking the wrong question.' In late May Jeff unveiled the 24 returning contestants for the Fiji-set 50th season of the CBS reality competition, which will premiere in 2026. Fans expressed disappointment that none of the all-stars were selected from seasons 19-31 as five competed in seasons 48-49 and 11 others appeared on the past five seasons. 'Too many new era players,' Instagram user @stagesofcj commented. 'Not enough early and middle era.' Instagram user @zacharyreality could not believe season 45 champ Dee Valladares and season 48 champ Kyle Fraser were brought back, writing: 'Why cast two recent winners?' And someone else wrote on X, 'I can't be the only one who thinks that the Mike White pick is a ploy by Jeff to try and draw in the White Lotus crowd, no?' Others were upset over the casting of two mystery competitors from season 49, which wrapped earlier this year and will air in the fall.
