UNIVERSITI Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) is charting new territory as an international kayaking hub, developing a state-of-the-art water sports facility worth RM1mil at the UPSI Marina in Perak.
Its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said the initiative, which included enhancement of the lake, acquisition of the latest kayaking equipment, specialised reference materials and the support of sports science expertise, had positioned UPSI as a leading destination for training, research and the management of national water sports events.
'UPSI offers more than just physical infrastructure. We are backed by strong academic capabilities and technical expertise,' he told Bernama.
The university currently has four national-level kayaking experts based at the Faculty of Sports Science and Coaching, ready to provide guidance and advisory services to athletes, coaches and sports organisations, he highlighted.
With ongoing scientific research, up-to-date reference resources and the application of cutting-edge water sports technology, UPSI is poised to become an integrated training centre for kayaking as well as a platform for organising local and international tournaments, he said.
Prof Md Amin said this when opening the 16th UPSI Kayak Regatta at Gerbang Suria on the Sultan Azlan Shah Campus near Tanjong Malim in Perak.
'Our aim is not just to produce excellent athletes but also to develop kayaking through a holistic approach that encompasses training, sports science, management and education,' he said.
Prof Md Amin said UPSI was in the process of securing official recognition from the Asian Canoe Confederation as one of the primary venues for canoe and dragon boat sports development and championships in the country.
'Once recognised, UPSI will join the ranks of Malaysian universities with international-class status as a centre for kayaking and dragon boat sports development,' he added.
UPSI offers comprehensive educational opportunities for athletes, ranging from diploma to doctorate programme.
This includes a special pathway known as Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning for Qualifications (APEL Q), tailored for coaches.
'We believe sports and education should progress together.
'Through this dedicated pathway, coaches with over 20 years of experience can further their studies through the Master of Education programme in Sports Science,' said Prof Md Amin.

Machucha missed birth of first child to be with Malaysian team ahead of Vietnam clash

Latest Malaysian footballer Imanol Machuca. PETALING JAYA: The country comes first rather than family for mixed heritage footballer Imanol Machuca. The 25-year-old missed the birth of his first born baby boy back in Argentina in order to be with the national football team for the all-important 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Vietnam on Tuesday. His wife Ailen Bernardi, a personal trainer, gave birth at the start of the week but Imanol was already on board the plane on a 30-hour journey from Roldan. "My beautiful baby boy," Machuca announced on his Instagram. And Machuca certainly has all the motivation he needs to help Malaysia end their long winless drought against Vietnam. Machuca, a winger who plays for Velez Sarsfield on loan from Brazilian side Fortaleza, is one of the five Malaysians abroad who joined the national team led by Australian coach Peter Cklamovski earlier this week. The others are strikers Joao Figueiredo and Rodrigo Holgado; and defenders Jon Iranzabal and Facundo Garces. "Malaysia have given all the best to me since I arrived to join the training camp earlier in the week. "I genuinely feel it is something special to represent the Harimau Malaya. It is a big honour for me and I will give it my all," added Machuca, who are among the youngest mixed heritage players in the national team. Cklamovski yesterday released the list of 30 players for the third and final phase of training, leaving out Syamer Kutty Abba, Ahmad Zikri Khalil and Haqimi Azim. The final list includes Dion Cools, who just arrived from Japan on Friday to join the training camp. Malaysia's last victory over Vietnam came in 2014. Since then, the Golden Star Warriors have won seven of their eight meetings in all competitions, with one match ending in a draw. Their most recent encounter was a 3-0 defeat for Malaysia in the 2022 AFF Cup group stage - now renamed the Asean Championship. Both nations sit level at the top of Group F with three points each, having won their opening matches. The Team Goalkeepers: Azri Ghani, Haziq Nadzli, Sikh Izhan, Syihan Hazmi. Defenders: Corbin Ong, Daniel Ting, Dion Cools, Facundo Garces, Gabriel Palmero, Harith Haiqal, Jon Irazabal, Junior Eldstal, Matthew Davies, Quentin Cheng, Shahrul Saad, Ubaidullah Shamsul. Midfielders: Afiq Fazail, Endrick Dos Santos, Hector Hevel, Nazmi Faiz, Nooa Laine, Stuart Wilkin. Strikers: Arif Aiman Hanapi, Faisal Halim, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Paulo Josue, Rodrigo Holgado, Romel Morales, Safawi Rasid.

[UPDATED] Dechapol destroys Malaysian hopes again

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand's Dechapol Puavaranukroh proved again why he is hailed as the best mixed doubles player in the world. He almost single-handedly ended the challenge of Malaysia's Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei at the Indonesia Open semi-final today. And yesterday, he played a key role in dismantling another Malaysian pair, world No. 5 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai in the last eight. World No. 6 Dechapol and his relatively new partner, Supissara Paewsampran came from behind to beat Tang Jie-Ee Wei 21-23, 21-15, 21-11 in 65 minutes at the Istora Senayan. "We did great in the first game but when it came to point to point, we didn't grab our chance," said Ee Wei. Dechapol, the 2021 world champion with former partner Sapsiree Taerattanachai, started combining with Supissara seven months ago, and have already won six World Tour titles. Tang Jie took the blame for the defeat, citing his higher error-rate during the crucial stages of the second and third games. "We tried to create attacking options, but I was making a lot of unforced errors at the net and lost points there. They played better but I have to take the responsibility (for the defeat)," said Tang Jie. "I think I couldn't handle the shots well at mid-court where I made mistakes." Dechapol-Supissara have now improved their head-to-head record against Tang Jie-Ee Wei to 3-1. For Tang Jie-Ee Wei, it was only their second tournament since resuming their partnership at the Singapore Open after their temporary split. Their result in Jakarta is still a big improvement compared to the Singapore Open where they lost to Taiwan's world No. 16 Ye Hong Wei-Nicol Gonzalez Chan in the second round.
